“Are you sure it’s okay to come around? I don’t want to intrude if you’re with other friends.” You spoke to Winter through the phone that was balanced between your face and shoulder as you fiddled with the keys to your beat up old rustic car, attempting desperately to keep hold of the bottle of wine you’d just bought.
“Of course it’s fine! You can’t come all the way out here and not come see me, I miss you!” Winter complained. “Fine, fine! Text me your address and I’ll be over soon!” “Bring wine!” Winter laughed. “Already on it.” You smirked. After you turned on the car ignition and input Winter’s address into your phone, you started on your short lived journey to the Anderson’s, smiling as you reminisced the first time you and Winter had spoken.
During the first week of your first semester at college, you’d secured yourself a job in a local bakery, and was tasked with the job of handing out promotional leaflets around campus. After successfully giving out only around ten flyers, a group of students decided it would be great fun to smack the pile of papers out of your hands, sending them flying across the ground. The wind carried them off all over the place as they shared laughter. The only person who stopped to help you as you got onto the cold concrete floor to collect the few remaining flyers was Winter.
She bought you a coffee after that, and convinced you to skip work the next day to join her for wine and pizza; you didn’t turn it down. You were fired a week later, but it was all worth it. Winter had become one of your best friends at college and since you were around her current area and knew just how into the election she was, you thought it could be fun to hang out for a while.
After your car came to a bumpy halt along the sidewalk of the Anderson household, you grabbed the wine and made your way towards the front door; the lawn sporting both right and left wing flags making you slightly more interested in the politics battle currently going on inside.
You only had to knock twice before Winter answered, swooping you up into a hug.
“Thank god you’re here, the debate is just about to start.” Winter explained as she led you down into what you could only assume was the basement.
Truthfully, you weren’t all that interested in politics, and, although you knew who you were putting your vote in for, you really only came along to support Winter as you were very familiar with how seriously she took this election.
Once you’d been completely enveloped in the darkness of the basement Winter introduced you to her two friends who were happily nestled on the large couch, and her brother, Kai, who was typing away furiously at his keyboard.
Winter had mentioned her brother a couple of times but you’d never pictured him to look the way he did. Blue hair long in front of his deep almost black eyes. He looked strong and broad and his facial structure looked very shard and pristine despite having only the light from his laptop shining up from underneath his chin. Truth be told, Kai Anderson was hot.
Kai had watched you as you walked down the stairs to the basement, his eyes tracing every inch of your body from tip toe to thigh to waist to face. He’d not recognised you, and so he was immediately interested, not really acting as though he was paying much attention to the things you said or the way you said them, but in actuality, only focussing on them as his eyes bore holes into his computer screen.

have 3 achievable goals a day: having a laundry list of things to do everyday is super unrealistic, and you just end up feeling bad about yourself because you didn’t accomplish your goals for the day.
leave your sundays open: i love sundays because they’re my day to chill out and catch up on school work that i wasn’t able to finish during the week.
recognize when you’re at your emotional limits: forcing yourself to get work done when you are unable to comprehend your study material does not benefit anyone.
learn how to say no: people will ask you for your time and it will stretch you to the limit, whether it be at your job, in your extracurriculars, or in your personal life. know when to step back and say no.
take care of yourself physically: take breaks, go for walks, shower regularly, get enough sleep, eat healthy, see your friends
celebrate your accomplishments: go out to eat with friends after a big exam, indulge in a night off after a busy week with some netflix and wine
make a study plan beforehand: it can be daunting to see how much work you need to put in to a class or task beforehand, but this allows you to spread your work evenly so you don’t become overwhelmed.
learn how to ask for help: it is very rare that people make it through school, whether it be high school or university or any graduate program, without needing the advice of others or just a kind soul to vent to. find that person.
never forget your hobbies: you will need things that keep you sane. if you love to play music, write, play volleyball, or cook, make you sure you don’t lose these things. they will become your escape when times get tough.
log off from time to time: it is exhausting to be constantly connected to social media and your email. just physically disconnecting from these for a night to take care of yourself can really help you clear your mind.

You excused yourself from the dinner table and Kai and Winter ad went up to your room, saying you were tired and needed some rest. Both Kai and Winter nodded at you in understanding and said goodnight. You locked your bedroom door and waited until you heard Kai go down into the basement and opened the window as quietly as you could. You swung out of the window and scaled to the edge of the roofing above the porch until you reached the gutting at the edge. You had had a lot of practise at this from when you were a teenager and used to sneak out of your parent’s house in the middle of the night – you knew how to do this quickly and quietly. You climbed down the beam at the edge of the roof silently hopped onto the ground. You were proud of this. You were just a child the last time you had to do something like that. You made your way across the front yard and onto the sidewalk and began to walk into the town in the dead of night.
You were only wearing a short dress with a sweatshirt over the top of it, so you were pretty cold in the chilly night air. You quickly found yourself hugging yourself for warmth. You didn’t really know where you were wondering to, but you knew you only had 2 hours max, as Kai always came to check on you at 10pm to see if you were asleep or not. You were having fun, almost skipping down the street, just you, by yourself. You almost wished Kai could see you know. You made it to the park in the middle of town, but the gate was locked. You wanted to get back there in plenty of time, not wanting to risk getting caught. You found a bench by a fountain and pulled out a cigarette from the box in your sweatshirt pocket, letting the cool breeze blow through your hair as you lit it. You sat there, on that bench for a good 40 minutes, just you and your thoughts, before you glanced up at your watch and realized you had only 40 minutes to get back. ‘Shit’ you thought. It took about 30 minutes to get back to the house and you had to get back in without getting caught yet. You bounded over the fence and out of the park and back out of town, not looking where you were going, just focusing on running. Suddenly, you felt yourself run into a figure. Looking up, you realised you had run into a man.
“Oh, gosh, I’m so sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was g-” You cut yourself off when you realised who it was you had run into.
“Yes. You better had be sorry, Y/N.” Kai said. ‘Fuck’ was the only thing running around in your head now. He grabbed you by your shoulder and bundled you into the back of one of his henchmen’s car. The journey home was silent, but you knew you would be in some deep shit when you got back.
You were right. As soon as you got back, Kai dragged you up the stairs and into your room. He pushed you down onto your bed and you looked up at him, tears welling in your eyes. You could practically see the anger radiating off him as he frowned down at you. “Kai, I’m…” you began, before you cut yourself off from surprise by kneeling down in front of you. “Little lamb…” Kai began, looking up into your tear-filled eyes. “Why did you try and run away? I was worried sick about you.” He said softly, taking your hands in his. You frowned slightly. Why was he being so nice to you? You expected him to be fuming, to be screaming at you. “I… I wasn’t running away. I was going to come back…I just wanted a little space for a while, that’s all.” You said quietly. “Why do you need space Y/N? Have I done something wrong?” “No, no, no! Of course you haven’t! You don’t need to be with me 24/7.” You muttered, just loudly enough for him to hear. “I know, little lamb. I just don’t want my child or his mother getting hurt.” He said, looking up at you.
