i play with sougo headcanons a lot, it just comes with the androgyny, but last year i was talking about butch lesbian sougo, and i kinda want to elaborate on the concept of butch sougo, specifically in the context of the popular historical lesbian trope of "woman who takes the role and appearance of a man for the sake of a job or opportunity". been rotating the trope in my mind and i think it would add a lot to some of the pre-existing parts of sougo's character and motivations.

"sougo" would be the name she'd go by when she starts living as a man but like for clarity's sake i'm just gonna say sougo. bc i think she identifies with the name a lot and that is still her. he/she "i'm probably nonbinary but my gender is dictated by my job so idrc rn" sougo.

first: sougo as mitsuba's younger sister. sougo admiring mitsuba so fucking much and wanting to take after her, but also knowing deep down that mitsuba has a certain femininity and charm to her that she wouldn't ever be able to achieve. so she falls into a heavier tomboy weird girl archetype. this is a canon event for autistic younger sisters, and how sougo starts getting interested in learning sword fighting and hanging out with the older men.

i think this would also add an interesting angle to sougo leaving home at a young age to work and send money back to mitsuba by creating another barrier so to speak. mitsuba can't work because she's sick, sougo is incredibly talented at the sword, so she makes a deal and lives as a man so she's able to become a samurai/work for the ssg. it's truly one of her only chances to make a better living and support her sister. (i truly don't think there's any dysphoria about living as a man tho, i think there are parts she really likes and are affirming as a butch. i think it's a o.hshc style situation honestly)

there's also something that could be said for how sougo acts around mitsuba, including using a less hyper-masculine personal pronoun, which some of the others laugh at. something something sougo over-compensating masculinity something something going back to his roots which are tied in the admiration of femininity.

it's wild how differently giving general writing advice vs giving general art advice is treated in fandom spaces actually. imagine if every art tip/tutorial you come across has people arguing in the notes about how you should "draw what you like" and not let people spoil your fun with stuff like "anatomy" and "composition" because you're doing this for free and you don't have to improve and then imagine as well if you went into the notes of someone's art post and saw people saying stuff like "i really enjoyed this but you could've used these colors instead and improved on your soft vs hard edges" don't you think it's crazy that that behavior's the norm for writing in fandom or am i crazy for thinking that's crazy
