Rest Time
Due to the ongoing COVID Pandemic, we will be simmering and resting. We look forward to igniting change soon.
OFAR’s Game Night is reforged in a new form and space but the essence is there still. Disconnect from the screens and form new complex connections to others from the Shenandoah Valley.
OFAR will be popping up at 1708 Gallery in Richmond as part of the Picnic Series in conjunction with Aaron McIntosh’s Invasive Queer Kudzu exhibition.
SLAG will be a panelist and a vendor at the upcoming Book Arts Fair in Richmond.
A.F.A.R. will be making a splash in New Haven at Yale University’s Center for Collaborative Arts & Media.
OFAR will be on a panel at James Madison University about the DIY Movement and Artist Run Spaces/Initiatives. Come learn what one can do with just a guest bedroom!
OFAR will be hosting a SLAG Mag release party at the Golden Pony on Dec 10, 2018 at 7pm. Stop by for a FREE copy of SLAG Mag.
OFAR is working with the Jon Henry General Store to curate installations
We have featured local OFARians in the space: Greg Stewart & Braxton Congrove. For the time being, OFAR is working with alumni to curate the space as it’s been a long-term vision to develop our own gallery space.
We’re working on expanding this opportunity to others, too! Look for an application to go live within the month. We hope to remain committed to our FREE focus on developing out the window’s first year roster.
Jon Henry General Store opens March 1. The store shares the same building with OFAR. It has two gallery spots.
The Old Furnace Artist Residency officially joined the Common Field network:
Common Field is a national network of independent visual arts organizations and organizers that connects, supports, and advocates for the artist-centered field. Founded in 2013 and launched in 2015, the Common Field network has 700+ members across 43 states. Programs include national convenings, grants, research, resources, forums, meet-ups and advocacy. Our vision is to increase understanding, involvement and knowledge of artists organizations and their value, and increase their capacity through national connectivity, dialog understanding and support.
It seems like a good fit for OFAR and hopefully will allow OFAR to network with other like minded artists, organizers, and cultural orgs in the pursuit of liberation.
OFAR is again a co-sponsor of Equality Virginia’s Day of Action on February 5. Hopefully, our Virginian folks can connect with their representatives in Richmond to let their voices be heard regarding the importance of equity in our Commonwealth.
Walking Series
Background:
In January 2018, The Old Furnace Artist Residency relocated to New Market, VA.
As part of the moving process, OFAR is renewing its listening work. OFAR wants to rekindle its connections with its audience, friends, artists, comrades, spaces, landscapes, and natural worlds.
As part of this work, OFAR is organizing a series of day hikes throughout the Shenandoah Valley. These Furnace sites are highly important to regional history in terms of economics, environment, and race relations.
These walks will not be a march but more of a wandering, cruise, meander, jaunt, skip, roll, saunter, and ramble, but not a stampede, traipse, pound, or stalk but like a journey, debouch, and maybe a pilgrimage.
Purpose:
These walks are to be an emergent art form. The “art” lives through this shared experience; participants are encouraged to contribute to its documentation.
Logistics:
If needing a ride to the site, we will be gathering at OFAR’s new home in New Market, 9383 North Congress Street, and proceeding to the site. OFAR will be providing packed lunches for everyone but we ask you to bring relevant supplies such as thick shoes, bottled water, sunscreen, etc.
All walks are an open invitation for attendance, purpose, & result. Elizabeth Furnace ~3 Miles February 10, 2018
Columbia Furnace ~4.1 Miles February 24, 2018
Roaring Run Furnace ~1.4 Miles March 18, 2018
Residency Unlimited published an interview with OFAR founder, Jon. Check out the interview here: tinyurl.com/ofarEssay
