SO!!! Joe would love nature documentaries. Particularly he’s a slut for those disneynature ones where they name the animals they follow?? He has to watch them with Nicky because when the dangerous animals hunt he gets a teeny bit scared and likes to hide in his husband’s shoulder. His husband sees past his bullshit and knows Joe just wants to make him laugh by pretending to be scared. Some times date night is movies in sweatpants and pretending to be scared and I love that for them.

Joe’s a massive David Attenborough fan. He will watch animal documentaries that are narrated by other people, but if he’s craving comfort he goes for an episode of planet earth.

That scene about the school of sardines choked Joe up more than he’d like to admit. “Thousands of sardines and they were gone in minutes, Booker!” Joe cries. They’re all gone! Booker blinks down at the half-eaten sardine and olive pizza laying forgotten on Joe’s plate. “So you’re not going to finish that?” He gets a disgusted look but it’s totally worth the extra half slice of pizza.

One of Joe’s favorite things is watching a documentary and then finding the animal in the wild. He has a point system based on how endangered the animal is and he doesn’t want to brag, but he has 563 points right now. Nicky claims he’s at 568 but there is no way he saw a Bugun Liocichla. (When Nile scores her first point, she takes a selfie and starts a new folder in her camera roll.)

With the rise of tiktok, Joe becomes a pretty big fan of mndiaye_97. Dude spits facts and the way he skirts around the guidelines is hilarious. However, what Joe likes the most is that the facts are so weird that they become memorable. He will now never look at a dolphin or chimp in the same way.

Scene Caffeine #5: Nicky’s latest hobby is watching home renovation shows. It was great at first. The stairs stopped creaking, the trims around the doors got replaced, a sun patio got built. Six months into this hobby now, Nicky is determined to tear down their current house and build it anew. 

Joe has always been bad at telling Nicky no.
