"Alright, now I know I've lost my damn mind. I seen a lot of crazy shit in my time, but this just ain't right."
❝ Joel—weren’t you up last night? ❞
"I'm up every night, darlin'. Really. Go get some rest."
[ he lifts the paper again; old news was still better than nothing ]
Actually, I wanna talk about this gifset I made. Because it’s giving me feels and I really want to explain why.
Before that actually happens you get ellie doing this:
She’s obviously angry, and although you don’t really see it, she’s scared. She was scared that she might actually die. But Ellie is Ellie and she doesn’t show that she’s scared, because she knows that if you show fear, people are going to react to that.
Joel comes along and doesn’t just come in front of her to find her, he instead grabs her from behind, trying to get her away from the scene. Naughty Dog doesn’t even show David’s smashed-in face, it’s that bad. Exactly the reason why Joel wants to get her away from it. Because if you see that, you’re going to obviously be scarred for life. And she hasn’t seen what she’s done, because while she’s smashing David’s face in, she’s got her eyes closed.
Ellie’s still got her eyes closed, and she hasn’t recognized his face yet. So she’s still in attack-mode. Because she hasn’t noticed that it’s Joel, and not one of David’s people.
Look at what Joel’s doing now. This action alone reassures Ellie that it’s not a person that’s going to harm her, and he makes sure that his face is seen by Ellie, because then she knows that it’s him.
This is the part where Ellie totally loses her aggression completely, because she doesn’t need it anymore. She’s safe with Joel, like she’s said before. She can start crying now, because she’s in a safe place, and Joel knows this, hence why he brings her closer so that she feels even safer. And he lets her cry, because bottling things up is not a good idea. Especially when you’re a kid going through all this shit.
To Joel, Ellie is now the daughter that he had lost. The scared little girl that had died in his arms has appeared again, only now she’s real. His fatherly instincts are kicking in and he’s soothing her, telling her constantly that it’s okay, and that everything’s going to be fine. This is when you really see that he’s become attached to Ellie.
Now we don’t get to hear what’s happening at this part, but you can sort of guess that he’s saying that everything’s going to be fine yet again. Probably something along the lines of “We’re gonna get you out of here, okay?” considering what happens in the next gif.
He’s now leading her out of there, because he knows staying in there long enough is going to hurt her. She doesn’t want to stick around here, because of the monster that tried to kill her a few moments ago still being around. Even if he’s dead, it’s gonna still be traumatic. Joel’s still making sure that he’s touching Ellie, letting her know that he’s there, even when she knows that he’s around now.
YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH THIS GAME HURTS ME UGH
❝ You sure? ❞
"Yeah, yeah. S'fine. I won't be sleeping tonight, anyway."
"Kid?" Fallon spat the word, her lip curling in disgust, “I’m in my twenties,” She narrowed her eyes, knowing it wasn’t the stranger’s responsibility to know her age. Any situation that made her feel a semblance of vulnerability seemed to turn off the part of her brain that filtered illogical thoughts, “And how the fuck am I supposed to know you’re not going to put one between my eyes if I let my guard down, huh?” Her eyes drifted to the eggs, ignoring the low grow that omitted from the depths of her stomach. A bullet to the head and they’d be all hers, it wouldn’t be the first time she’d spill blood for food and it wouldn’t be the last.
Yeesh, she was a spit fire. Reminded him a little too much of Ellie. She should be easy enough to manage, anyway. He lifted his hands in a placating manner, holstering the gun and swishing his hands about lazily to indicate to the girl he wasn't armed with anything else to sneak attack her with. Though... he did have a shiv in his coat pocket, but that was precautionary. "And I'm south of fifty, so yeah. Yer a kid to me." Everyone seemed like a kid to him now-a-day. He was getting too goddamn old for this... why he continued to do it, he had no idea.
"Look, I ain't gonna put one between your eyes, I'm just hungry. I got a family to feed, alright? Maybe I can trade ya." Family. Well, it was the first time he ever called Ellie his family... there were first times for everything. "I got medicine. Weapons. Name your price, but keep it reasonable."
[ Yawns. ]
[ he rolls his eyes, leaning forward after reading through an old newspaper ]
If you're that tired, Ellie, go to sleep.
