he continued to paint, pretending to be disinterested despite holding on to each and every word. he listened with as much attention as she gave him, his hand taking control of the art as he remained mentally occupied. so when she asked why he wasn’t listening, he couldn’t help but drop his head.
‘ if we’re gonna talk about what we’re not supposed to do … ’ he put the bottle down again, spinning on his broom to face her. ‘ bad shit happens here all the time, margaret. god knows i know that. an’ yeah … i get that i’m s’pose to believe you, ‘cause, i dunno, we got that unspoken bond or whatever. but people lie. ’ he wasn’t angry when he spoke. the words slipped from his lips with the same kindness he originally intended, no malice meant for the girl before him. he was simply explaining. ‘ for instance … ’
he let the rest of his sentence linger in the air as he stared at her, the boy leaning forward on his broom once again to mirror the way he greeted her. adie was never one to keep what he was thinking to himself, save for the obvious internal issues. he spoke the honest truth almost as if he didn’t have a choice, hurting feelings left and right with the unfortunate gift of guilt to linger overhead. THIS he had kept to himself though.
‘ i like you. ’
‘ an’ we’re not talkin’ that ol’ buddy, ol’ pal type’a bullshit. no we’re talkin’ … doodlin’ in my fuckin’ notebook, heart skippin’ a beat when ya smile type’a bullshit. ’ he let out a laugh, the smile he wore both soft and genuine. ‘ so really … what’s this bad thing that’s gonna happen ? ‘cause you an’ i have been spittin’ in the face of conventionalism since the day we met. ’
eyes widening as he spoke, her heart was thrumming to a degree that had even her head pounding. distress lining her expression at words that were not unkind, but stern. how rare, to see him so serious. and after all it’s thrumming and pounding, her heart crawled it’s way to her throat & lodged itself there. so she swallowed thickly as he shifted closer. curious what lie she had invented that would serve as an example only to hear ...
i like you.
----&&. she released the breath she’d been holding in a low shaky exhale. pulling her own broom forward to meet him as she searched his expression warily, hands reaching for him to drag him and the broom closer as he explained an all too familiar feeling.
her features melted into a bright smile, and if she were any happier she might have glowed, a warm fire burning beneath the shell of her skin. surely he could see it too. but she could also try returning the favor and tell him. her mouth falling open in a breathless laugh. ‘ .... i knew it. ‘ ever the liar. but only teasing, even now. her clear relief screamed quite the opposite. she was shocked, overwhelmed, desperate to pull him closer and never let go. she pressed her temple against his, hands clutching him like a life raft and eyelids fluttering and dusting her lashes against the peak of his cheek as feelings dressed up as words passed her lips, hoarse and shuddering. ‘ i like you too. ‘ she admitted, fingers reaching to brush over the softness of his cheek, thumb catching his bottom lip. it wasn’t the perfect word to describe the feeling, but it was close and for the moment. more than enough to process. ‘ in a heart stopping, falling, ... honest type of way. ‘ blinking, she met his eye. heart swelling uncomfortably yet lingering in the finer moment anyway. before closing the distance and pressing her lips against the corner of his mouth. brief, soft, and earnest.
not fully pulling away, she took a deep, steadying breath before continuing, ‘ and now the bad news. oh adie. adie. i actually .... stumbled into something. ’ and while there was a hint of awe to this statement, it lacked any joy of discovery. pulling away slightly so she could reach for his left hand. she ducked her head to dust a soft kiss over his palm, her features contorting painfully. it was a strange feeling-- not knowing how to deliver bad news. starting slow, she seemed to gain momentum as the truth weaseled its way to the surface ‘ he goes here. the one who-- .... mulciber. he’s the one that broke your hand. “ her grip tightening, she entwined her fingers in his as if she could shield him away from even residual or yet to come pain.
‘ && oh gods ... he threatened to do it again if i don’t ... act right. like how i used to be. he’s so-- he plays these games, and i could never beat him at chess. ’ she moaned in an incoherent way, frustration shaking her head, and she buried her nose into the crook of his neck. fingers curling into the fabric of his hoodie and a stream of inarticulate conscious arose muffled by the thick material. a comforting place to pull her thoughts together. ‘ but i don’t even know what that means anymore. how i used to be?? the only difference i can see is how HAPPY i am all the time. when i’m with you. because of you. ---and i want to tell everyone. anyone, but there’s no proof and no one would ever believe me. ’ and her words cracked, garbled and watery. cheeks staining the darkness of his hoodie with a layer of wetness as the truth stumbled from her choked lips, ‘ which i-- i did that. it’s my fault. but i’m so scared, finn. .... i can’t fuck this one up, ---i don’t want to be the reason you can’t paint anymore. not a chance ‘
