The Brothers Grim || @redmako
Bolin was walking the calm streets with Mako. He was glad he could finally spend time with his brother, with him being a cop now. The two bending brothers were going to the noodle shop to get some food, just like the old days.
“When was the last time I ate?” He wondered. “Hmph, I only ate breakfast today, no wonder why my stomach is killing me”
The earthbender tried to pay attention to what his brother was saying, but the thought of food clouded his mind. He was able to pick up something Mako was talking about, something about an increase in disappearances and bodies showing up. They soon arrived at the restaurant, much to Bolin’s appraisal, and went inside.
“Finally! Sorry bro, but you’ll have to finish that thought later. I have a hole in my stomach that needs to be filled up!” he said, running into the restaurant.
The earthbender soon stuffed his, and Pabbo’s, face with food. The warm food felt euphoric to the hungry Bolin. When his plate was cleaned of food, he let out a loud belch and finished by wiping his mouth with the napkin.
“That definitely hit the spot.” He said, patting his stomach with his hands.
The two brothers paid the bill and proceeded to head back to the island. It was late enough for the street lights to be on, but early enough for a decent amount of people to still be on the streets.
“So how is everything bro? With you being a cop now and all. Oh, and how’s Korr-“ the sentence was soon interrupted by a girl screaming.
Bolin was the first to run to the source of the scream. He soon reached the girl, only to discover something he’s never seen before. A tall man was standing over a young woman; her face was pale and emotionless. What stunned Bolin the most was the blue color that was coming out of the girl’s mouth and going into the man’s mouth.
“What is he doing to her?” Bolin wondered.
The man released the girl and looked towards the earthbender. His face was hides by a hood, but his mouth was visible, along with sharp, animal-like teeth. The thing smiled at the two brothers before disappearing around the corner. The frightened Bolin ran to the limp girl on the ground.
“She…. She’s dead Mako. What was that thing? It sucked…. It sucked the life out of her! Mako, what do we do?” he said, tears filling his eyes from the sight of the young girl. Bolin felt helpless, just as hopeless as when Amon was about to take his bending,
“Amon was a man though, that… that was not a man. That was something worse.”
The day started out exceptionally well and the two bending brothers decided to go on a walk. It’s been a while since they’ve had a proper get together. Spending time with him would be something nice, if it weren’t for the fact that he’s stressed over the sudden massive killings that’s arising through the streets of Republic City. It’s like a parasite that manifested under the task force’s nose. When they finally acknowledged it, there had been tens of people that were reportedly murdered. Although the information was to be kept as top secret, Mako figured it wouldn’t be too bad if he were to vent out to his younger brother.
He spoke of the plans that they brewed and how dangerous things will be. There were many inquiries that escaped his lips but none of them were answered by his wondering younger brother whose attention was elsewhere. Despite of the rude demeanor, the fire bender still found it quite endearing, seeing his expression alter from boredom to enthusiasm. It was almost too amusing to watch. With a smudge of grin etching across his lips, Mako then followed him to the restaurant.
It was nice having a full meal, granted that he was a cop now, it meant that he had a better pay. From time to time, recollections of their nonage would flood back and he’d ponder how he managed to raise Bolin alone. Without the help of any guidance, just by pure whim and a little bit of luck, he raised his brother by himself.
Upon finishing the meal, they eventually paid then left the restaurant with a satisfied stomach. Dusk was rolling in and the fire bender figured that it was too early to leave. Perhaps a couple more rounds in the park, just to stroll around for old time sake wouldn’t be too bad. The sudden abrupt halt in Bolin’s sentence caused the fire bender to glimpse at his brother enquiringly. The staggering peer that the young earth bender expressed made his brows furrowed as he followed the direction where he’s staring at.
Mako stood there, stiff and astonished with the frightening scene that’s happening before him. A man with an ominous aura emitting around him, sucked the girl’s soul. The fire bender’s eyes zoomed out, turning microscopic as he strained himself from shaking. No words escaped his lips as his amber eyes continued to watch in horror. The hair on the back of his neck stood upon noticing the man’s sly grin appointing to them. It was a mere smirk but he felt tingles creep on his spine, making him suddenly feel cold.
Once the man took his exit, the fire bender finally exhaled. He hadn’t known that he’s been holding his breath until the lack of air became unbearable. Finally snapping out of his trance, he approached his weeping brother. With observing eyes, he studied the corpse noting the similarities with all the other murder cases. The most logical idea is to call the cops. Fortunately they gave him a device to contact them despite of the long distance. Mako endeavored to sound as calm as possible, aiming for a reassuring voice to calm not only him, but Bolin as well. With the given approval, the pubescent then took a look at his brother who held a frightened surface.
“Everything will be fine, Bo….” The assurance in his voice faltered into whispers until it became nothing but white lies. Will everything be ok? Spirits only knows.
The cops arrived a few minutes after the initial call. They were interrogated almost immediately however, seeing that Mako is a cop too, they didn’t find the need to ask his younger brother. Mako gave all the facts, details, and everything he can recall. It was like a vivid nightmare came to life and it frightened him for the safety of Republic City. Minutes of surveying had gone by before finally finishing up and letting him go. Once he was liberated from the questioning, he headed to give heed to Bolin. “Bo, I need you to go home….I’ll be doing cop duties tonight…”
Bolin began to walk home just as his brother told him to. The cold spikes of fear still pounded at his head while he tried to wrap his mind around the concept of the past events. He tried to think of every possible solution to what happened, but none of the pieces fit the puzzle.
“He sucked the life from her body. I thought taking one’s bending away was the worst thing to happen, but this?”
The scene kept flowing through his mind, like a video stuck on replay, every horrific image playing out like they were happening all over again. Bolin’s senses seemed to have peaked within the last hour, he heard every noise, smelled every wisp of air that that passed through his nostrils, and paid attention to every detail of each person that passed him, none of which matched the mysterious man in the ally.
Bolin walked the city for well over two hours, but each passing minute seemed to worry him more and more. The sight of the sun rising made the distraught bender realize how much time has passed and, though reluctant, decided to head home and get some rest. Once he was able to discover his location amongst the city, the earthbender put himself on the right direction to the ferry and began to walk more. The cold hands of fatigue began to claw itself into the young man’s mind, and his eyes became heavy. He no longer felt his feet hit the pavement, but he still have notion of what he was doing. As he was walking, something seemed to catch his eye. A tall figure stand amongst the trees, staring at every movement Bolin made. The drowsy Bolin rubbed his eyes, unsure if his mind was playing tricks on his frail mind. He turned his head once more towards the direction of the man, but he was there no longer.
“I got to get some sleep soon; I’ll go crazy if I don’t.” He thought to himself.
His walk soon turned into a brisk run towards the ferry, the sooner he was safe at home, the better. He reached the docks within minutes and, along with a cheerful greeting from the ferryman, was on his was across the water. His quick breaths soon turned into long, deep inhales as the sensation of calm and solitude wash over his body. The only thought in his mind was simple; bed. And he did just that, he got off the ferry and slowly walked to his room. With a thud, his head hit his pillow and he was fast asleep.
Bolin awoke in the later evening, yet he was not in his room, but in the city. He had no earthy idea how he got there, and no idea where exactly “there” was. Nothing looked familiar to him, but he proceeded to walk in one direction. Chills crept into his spine as he felt the sensation of eyes upon him. Something was watching him, and with each step the earthbender took, the being was two steps closer. Bolin proceeded up the street, but was soon halted by a sound behind him. He whipped around, hands up and ready for a fight, but nothing was there.
“Something’s not right…. Where is everyone?”
The usual bustling streets were soulless and empty; the buildings dull and grey. Bolin once again heard the noise behind him, but as he whipped around, two tall figures were behind him. They were cloaked in hoods and had the same chilling smile the man in the ally had. Fear seemed to strike the bender right in the core of his stomach. The normal sense of resistance Bolin normally had was washed over with dread and fear, so he did the only thing he could think of, and ran. He sprinted down the street, not daring to look back, but as he turned the corner, four more tall figures were blocking his path. He turned once more towards the direction he came from, but the two figures from before was blocking his path as well. So, like a dog trapped in a corner, he decided to fight. With the raise of his hands, two boulders were in his control and were soon thrown at the enemies. Fear once again struck the earthbender as each figure dodged the attacks, and as they did, they progressed forward. Bolin continued to fight, throwing everything he had at his enemies, but not a single attack hit its target. Exhaustion soon set in and Bolin fell to one knee, only to be picked up by cold, deadly hands.
“What are you? Why are you doing this?” exclaimed the bender.
“Weeee are the giverssss and takerssss of life.” hissed the figure. “It is ssssimply because we can.”
The being’s smile turned into an open mouth full of sharp teeth. A burning sensation hit Bolin in the very center of his wellbeing, as if everything he knew, everything he was, were being taken from him. Every memory and experience seemed to flash through his mind as he felt the years leave his body, as if an hourglass was reaching the final grains of sand before it was empty. Every bit of his will attempted to hold on to the final moments but, as if he was holding on to a weight for too long, it became too much and slipped away. His body became an empty vessel, just as the girl’s did in the ally. Darkness overwhelmed him and he slipped into an empty void.
Bolin shot upward and threw a medium sized ball of rock at the wall, and mind soon followed by taking in the surroundings. Bolin soon realized he was safe in his room, and he fell back onto his bed.
“It was just a dream.” He told himself as he wiped the sweat of his forehead. “But…. It seem so real.”
It had been a little more than two hours since he fell asleep, but the feeling of drowsiness was gone, and the bender decided he would head back to the city to check up on his brother. He hoped that his older counterpart had achieved some progress about the current case. So Bolin ate a quick snack and, with Pabbu on his shoulder, got on the ferry and headed to the city. The streets were now full with people, some rushing to work, some chatting with friends, but to Bolin, any sign of humanity calmed him. The dreamed haunted him all the way to the station as he walked.
”Everything felt real Pabbu. Every feeling, every sensation, it was as if it truly happened.”
The small ferret only looked at his owner and let out a small sound of acknowledgment. It was not long until the two reached the station. As he walked inside, he quickly noticed his brother amongst the group of uniformed police. Before he reached his brother, Bolin decided he would keep the dream to himself, just for now.
“He probably already has a lot on his plate, the last thing he needs is me making it worse.” He thought to himself
“Hey bro! Any progress on…. The situation?”
