A collection of sheet music covers dated 1917-1919. This sheet music provides a glimpse into the American mindset once US troops were committed to what was known at first as the European War, during the final year of the conflict, and then cycling down from a wartime footing. While the production of many consumer goods was curtailed during World War I, sheet music and, surprisingly, pianos were not among their number.
Closer examination of some of the pieces, particularly “Glory, Glory, for Old Glory” (1917), shows that pieces drew on images from earlier conflicts, such as the Spanish-American War. Others featured prominent performers of the day, such as Al Jolson, or mentions of popular New York shows, such as Ziegfeld’s Midnight Frolics.
