Star blinked twice at the person in front of her before registering what had just happened. Despite his good intentions Star still snatched her wallet out of his hand and smacked him with it. Probably harder than she meant to. “Sorry, but you don’t steal things from people!“

Oliver immediately jumped back in shock, hoping not to get whacked again by the intimidating girl who looked like she could definitely kick his ass. “Sorry, sorry!” He yelped, holding his hands up in defeat. “I promise I wasn’t going to steal it, I swear. I could -- I mean, if you want, I could give you some money as an apology? And to stop you from hitting me again?”

Barrel groaned with effort, as he tried to lift the weights, at the gym. When he noticed someone glancing at him, he straightened his body, and smiled. “I can totally lift that… I just strained my wrist.” He lied, as he rubbed his left wrist.

“Do I honestly look like I’m in a position to judge?” Oliver sighed, gesturing to his entire body. “You look like you could probably lift five of me. Don’t sweat it, man. Besides, if you can’t lift it, it’s not a big deal. Everyone else here is struggling too, otherwise we wouldn’t be working out in the first place.”

“And yet, you like honestly think that I would take you seriously now that you’ve just stolen my wallet?!” She retorted, narrowing her eyes at him in a glare. “Like, how do I not know that the moment I turn my back on you, that you aren’t going to snatch it right up again?!” Okay, the heiress knew that she might be blowing this a bit out of peroration, especially since he did give her wallet back. But being someone who came from money, it wasn’t like Pacifica wasn’t use to people trying to steal from her before. Still very much glaring, the blonde crossed her arms. “Again, how do I like trust that what you’ll teach me would actually be something useful? Like, you could be teaching me lies for all I know.”

“In my defense, I didn’t steal it. I had every intention of giving it back to you,” Oliver insisted, doing his best to save his own hide. “As long as you put it in your purse or somewhere I can’t really grab it, then you’re good to go. Trust me, I used to do this all the time back home; I can tell you what con-artists look for.” He paused for a moment, realizing how that sounded. “Okay, so I should probably preface this by saying I used to be super poor, so back then it was more of a ‘steal or starve’ kind of thing? I didn’t, y’know, just do it for the thrill or anything. But that’s besides the point -- because I know what they look out for, I can help you out. I mean, it’s common sense, but you don’t have to believe me if you don’t want to. I just hope you don’t come across someone who’ll take your stuff when you’re not being careful enough.”

Snagging her wallet back from him, Ariel frowned. “Right, point taken but you could have proven your point without taking it and just telling me. You realize how wrong that is right? Even if you were trying to help. If you did that to someone else? Like my boyfriend? You’d probably have a bloody nose.”

Nothing terrified Oliver quite like an angry girl, especially one that was yelling at him and looked like she was getting worked up. From his experience with Georgette, this was a sign that his best option was to save face and beg for mercy. “I didn’t -- I’m sorry if it upset you,” he quickly stammered. “I was, uh, trying to just be creative and cool, but clearly it didn’t work out that way, so my bad -- totally my fault here. Your boyfriend isn’t, like, a buff guy or anything, right? No one who could, y’know, technically throw me in a dumpster or actually kick my ass?”

“Did you just?” Staring at the familiar wallet this random guy held within his hands, Pacifica instantly snatched it away despite him already holding it out towards her and clutching it within her grasps. “I like seriously cannot believe that you just did that! If you like noticed that it was reachable for the prying eyes, than you like could have just said something you know!”

In hindsight, maybe snatching her wallet wasn’t the best idea. He probably could have just mentioned it like she said, especially since he looked rather shady by plucking it up himself. “But then maybe you wouldn’t have taken me as seriously,” he pointed out, though he was already beginning to feel guilty. “If you want, I can teach you what people look for when they’re pick-pocketing? That way you won’t have someone do this again and it’ll be my way of saying sorry.”

“What the hell?” Vidia grabbed the wallet back and shoved it into the bottom of her purse. “You could’ve just told me that instead of taking it and causing me to freak the fuck out.” Feeling a little more vulnerable and stupid, but most of all, just plain annoyed.

Oliver realized he’d made a deadly mistake the moment visibly anger spread across the girl’s face, and it took every ounce of courage in him not to cower back in fear. “I’m sorry, I just -- I didn’t mean to scare you or anything,” he quickly tried to reassure. “I was just trying to, y’know, show what someone might’ve done if you left it in your back pocket. Plus maybe now you’ll, uh...not do it again?”

Paqi opened her mouth to speak as she eyed the wallet in the younger boy’s hand but then raised her welly groomed brow, undoubtedly impressed as she took it. “Okay, you have to show me how you did that cuz every time I try doing that around here I end up getting caught.”

“Wait, what?” Oliver blinked in confusion, clearly surprised by the fact her only takeaway from the stunt was that she wanted to learn the same trick. “I mean...I don’t think that’s legal? My friend Dodger -- he’s the one who taught me how to do stuff like that -- said you’re only supposed to take from people you know have enough money to make up for whatever you take. Do you really need money that badly?”

“Y’know, you should really find a better place to put your wallet.” With a small flourish of his hand, Oliver held up the wallet in question and gave its owner a stern look. “I’m not the type of guy who’d steal from some random person on the street, but not everyone is like me. If I could grab it without you even realizing, then anyone else can do the same thing.”

“You know what I’ve been craving to do? Go on a road trip. Even just for a day of two.” She fidgeted her feet under the Flo’s V8 Cafe booth while she spoke to the person sitting across from her. “I don’t know, dude,” she said, shrugging, “Maybe I’m just in one of those moods.”

“You should definitely take a trip to New York,” Oliver mumbled through a mouthful of burger, swallowing it down with a gulp from his milkshake. “I’m telling you, no place compares to NYC and I think it’s the most road trip-worthy place to go. But I think you should skip the ‘road’ part and just take a plane there, unless you’re feeling old-school and want to take a Greyhound bus all the way there.”

Oliver quickly glanced around the coffee shop and searched for any possible seat opening, but the last remaining spots were snatched up by patrons who’d gotten their drinks. “I’m just hanging here until my coffee’s ready,” he reassured, sitting on the edge of the chair. "Don’t worry, man, I won’t be here long. That’s cool, right?”

Frankie inhaled, digging his feet deeper into Crystal Cove’s sand. “ Okay, like, I don’t mean to discourage you, but are you sure you know what you’re doing? ” The sun had just went down, and they were definitely one of the only two left on the beach. “ I’m just saying, because I’m super weak, and if anything goes wrong, I can’t save you. ” 

Oliver considered himself to be a decent swimmer, but this would be his first time taking a dip in a massive body of water that led right out to the open ocean. “It’s safe, right?” He asked, glancing between the other boy and the glistening water just a few feet away. “I mean, no one’s ever gotten dragged out to sea, yeah?”

I might be exactly 2,441 miles away from all of my friends and everything I’ve ever know, but it could be worse.
