Nothing is ever enough. I couldn’t create if it was. And I have to. That’s what I do. That’s what I am. And now I must try it all again.

Goldilocks Gallery in Old City is closed and it’s the end of an era. This place meant a lot to many of us and was home to some of my best friends at times. Aubrey Loftus of Modern Misfits held down the groovy girl vibes for years in this gallery/studio space ran by Kamal Lamoza. Aubrey’s studio was such an inspiration, strewn with vintage clothes, patterns, sewing machine, odds and ends, and artwork illustrating the many rock and roll icons we revere. While the room transitioned several times, it returned to Aubrey before closing. In that time I styled and directed one of my favorite shoots ever with Olivia Flocco, then singer for the Strange Heat, and photographer Sam DeSantis. We had the best day despite extreme heat and nine locations. Capturing Olivia’s funky, yet girlish personality, we created a short story of empowerment and alter ego.
The heart of the editorial was playing around in Aubrey’s loft, dancing and strumming and smoking, telling each other how much we believed in us and wishing more days could match this one.
We never shared many of these photos, and as it happens when you put something on the back burner, they sat for a long time until I was emotionally drawn to bring it back up.
With the closing of Aubrey’s studio and Goldilocks Gallery, I find solace in remembering the girl power and the heartfelt productions that happened in these spaces.

Cosmic girl, Olivia Flocco at Goldilocks Gallery, Philadelphia, PA.
Olivia’s style is a mix of influences, ever evolving odes to her hollywood girl crushes. A lot of the inspiration from this shoot came from Kate Hudson’s Penny Lane character in Almost Famous, 2000. Olivia, however, is not a “band-aid” or groupie for anyone but herself. The sometimes singer and youtuber, then fronting the psych jam band The Strange Heat, lives in a Pink Floyd, Badhu and Jamiroquai world. Fighting off monotony and anxiety by working on her girl power through music, rock climbing, makeup and slasher films. In this set we wanted to run with the creative factory mentality of our friendships and the 60s fashion emboldened by the girls of the actual Factory. Olivia became our acid twiggy on the roof in hand painted shoes by Aubrey Loftus, Holly’s favorite MiuMiu glasses and a mushroom necklace from Philly’s Moon and Arrow.

Olivia Flocco at Eyes Gallery. The feminitiy that exudes from this place is incredible, an homage to craftsmanship, folk art and artists like Frida Kahlo, this is a philly must-see. The little shop and gallery has been on south street since 1968! Julia Zagar and her husband, mosaic artist Izaiah created the Latin American crafts fashion and specialty store with acute attention to detail and overwhelming abundance like all of their creations. The music room was a fun spot to take Olivia for some playful noise-making and dress up.
