Eyebrows knitting together as Liv had to check who he was planning a life with, Kevin let out a quiet chuckle and turned to his younger cousin in confusion. “Yeah, of course with Soph. Jeez, Liv, do you think I’ve got a following of women to take my pick from?” Kevin had to wonder if maybe any time spent with Tessa had her thinking a certain way about what was going on between the two of them. The truth was, the lines had been blurry since his high school sweetheart returned to town but that was simply down to the two of them trying to navigate their friendship for the first time since breaking up. Sure, they’d been friends before they dated but all communications halted once they broke up and so this was an entirely new situation for the two and it had been a long time since they’d been in each other’s lives. Nowadays he felt better about it—he and Tessa were friends and it was nice having the girl back in his life. The blonde’s smile faded as Olivia went on to ask him whether he ever missed the woman in question and, honestly, he hadn’t anticipated it. The answer didn’t come to him straight away; mainly because Liv hadn’t finished speaking and so he chose to listen. Kevin was well aware of the situation she was referring to and it still upset him to think of her hurting over this guy. “Honestly…at first, I missed her every single day. For years. It took me a really long time to feel okay about who I was without her.” Kevin admitted, giving a small shrug. “It sounds kinda lame but it’s just like the saying—time heals all wounds. One day it won’t feel as hard.” His words weren’t empty; he meant every single one of them and he had faith that his younger cousin would pull through this. “Ah, I wouldn’t say you’re basic but I don’t think your passion lies in fashion.”
“I don’t know, maybe?” Her shoulders lifted in a shrug as she let out her own chuckle. “A friend of mine said you were hot not that long ago. Apparently, she used to have a big crush on you. And, I don’t know if you’re aware but you’re kind of a big deal around here. Sort of like, a local celebrity. You should use it to your advantage more. But, not so much that you get a big head.” Liv’s laughter was softer now, as it traveled to her eyes. There was a brief moment of silence, as Kevin considered how to answer Liv’s other question about Tessa. Part of her wondered if this topic was even comfortable to talk about. Or if discussing it was like breathing life into something you’d much rather not. But, he answered it ultimately, and so she supposed it couldn’t have been that uncomfortable. Or so, she sincerely hoped. Granted, his answer caused Olivia to grow increasingly silent. It hit home. More than she expected it to. Mainly because, the way he described it, she could relate. So the fact that Kevin was able to move on from something so profound, meant that maybe she could too. As he said ― time heals all wounds. How much time though, was the question. To which, she was almost positive he wouldn’t have an answer for. Since, she just assumed it was different for everybody. “It does sound lame. But only, because it’s not specific. Especially, when you’d rather just know when it’ll happen. Would probably save me a lot of headache too but, ya know...” She shrugged again, and then jokingly scowled at his remark. “Jerk. You’re not supposed to agree! You’re supposed to say ― Liv, you can do anything you put your mind to. It sounds hella corny but, if the shoe fits ――“ again, she was only joking and teasing him. And, she fully expected him to fire back with more fun-fueled banter.

LOCATION: Romeo’s home WHEN: Early morning WHO: @oliviapcrter
[FIRST PART]
The warm water stung Romeo’s skin as it hit his flesh, a scalding relaxation upon tense muscles. Hot steam filled his lungs, suffocating him, yet as he ran his hands over his face, it felt as though the more the shower misted, the clearer he could think. With the help of Olivia, he’d made it home in one piece. Olivia. He’d asked her (gently demanded, really) that she stay while he showered and the thought of her in another room in his own home was somewhat disorienting. Or maybe a dream. When she’d first asked his address, it had been a jolting inquiry, leaving Romeo dumbfounded. It had never occurred to him that she didn’t know where he lived. In his mind, Olivia had haunted each corner enough to have deluded him into believing that she was actually there. Had been there. She’d been everywhere for so long that the idea that she never was was almost too foreign. Too wrong. It was another reminder of how far they’d drifted. That no matter how hard Romeo tried, in his own way, to keep them tethered to shore, the current was too strong. It was only now that they’d reached a sandbar—- a momentary reprieve to stand on—- but for Romeo, it was quickly eroding away. His earlier revelation had yet to be forgotten. If anything, the confusion it’d triggered was growing by the minute, threatening to implode with a vengeful fury.
Finishing his shower, Romeo stepped out. He was exhausted, but at least he was clean. Even as the headache slowly but surely came on and his body begged for sleep, Romeo refused. It’d been so long since he and Olivia had been so close—- so calm—- and he intended on holding onto it for as long as he could. Tugging on his shirt, he made his way out to find her. His time beneath the water had led to one, overwhelming desire: to ask Olivia what she felt. The petite blonde had always felt things so deeply, so passionately, that surely she could explain to him what it felt like to feel anything at all. Romeo, in all his insidious glory, was a god trapped in a world he didn’t understand. He came from diamonds and gold, sin and black shadows. A heritage that was magnificent, shimmery, and terrifying. Ungodly beauty permeated its walls, but that was all there was. There was no nuance, no color, no vibrancy. People like Olivia—- normal people—- lived in a world of dynamic and electrifying hues. They were alive. Romeo, it seemed, only felt alive when destroying everything around him. Ruination and lust. Ares and Lucifer. He was evil violence—- nothing more, nothing less. He liked it that way, he really did. It just made for a lonely existence.
As he rounded the corner, he could see the small blonde’s head peeking into view. Softly knocking on the wall beside him, he made his presence known. “Thanks for bringing me home,” he paused. “I owe you one.” Stepping forward, Romeo stopped a few feet in front of her. “Liv, I need to ask you something.” The words were difficult on his throat and he couldn’t help but briefly look down before returning his hazel gaze in her direction. “How did you know you loved me?” It was a loaded question and it lingered in the air with the weight of a thousand tons. Romeo wasn’t simply asking Olivia to verify that she had loved him, but to tell him how. To save him. If he could identify with at least some of what she said, he would know he was like her and he wasn’t different. He had loved her and he had felt something, even if he never would again. He’d know that at least once in his life, there’d been a spot and for one brief shining moment, it’d been glorious, great, and human. A Camelot.
It felt strangely surreal being in his home, occupying his space. A space that was... very palatial and sleek. Much like Romeo himself. In a lot of ways, it was a direct reflection of who he was as a person and how he liked things and maybe that’s why she didn’t feel uncomfortable being surrounded in it. While she heard the shower run, Olivia did her best to wait for his return. It wasn’t as if, she could take off so easily anyway. Had she decided she wanted that, she’d just be waiting for an uber. And whether she cared to admit it or not, a part of her didn’t really want to flee, not yet at least. So much for being sensible these days. But then, Romeo ensured that sensibility was never much of an option in his case. Olivia showed no signs of resistance when it came to him.
Upon following the sounds of his knuckles rapping against the wall to announce his presence, Olivia turned around abruptly, looking incredibly startled, like a baby deer. She regained composure however, without much delay and straightened up, relieved to see a more unsullied version of him. His previous appearance was enough to haunt her well into the rest of the day. Hopefully, this newer one though, could replenish the view of the other. “Yeah.” Her response was but a murmur. Audible, although barely. She didn’t bring him home with the full intent of making him feel indebted to her. And besides that, she didn’t want their interactions to feel limited by that or forced into. It might’ve seemed that way on her end, when she initially said yes but, she’s since had time to confront that, that may not be true. “You’re welcome. You don’t owe me one though, it’s fine. I’m just glad you’re safe.” Whether or not, it was too much for her to disclose, she voiced her feelings anyway, because she wanted him to know. No matter how estranged or distant they got, she’d always care about his wellbeing.
“Oof, okay. Sounds a little ominous but shoot?” Along with her nervous chuckle came a raised brow. She was a little apprehensive, because telling someone you need to ask them something, is not that far off from saying we need to talk. Both were accompanied with bad news, usually. And for a brief moment, ―― or however long it took him to spit it out ―― Olivia had dreadfully wondered if perhaps Romeo knew about her minor, innocent sleepover with River. Then again, if he had known, then his approach wouldn’t have been nearly as soft as it was. Relieved it wasn’t about that, Olivia finally let go of the breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. Not that his actual inquiry was any easier to discuss. It was a loaded topic. And the answers he sought, were far from simple. Olivia already faced difficulties explaining this subject to other people, how could she possibly explain it to the one person her feelings were actually about? Talk about hard.
After finally meeting Romeo’s borderline puppy dog gaze, Olivia knew she would already be doomed to try. Although, she couldn’t really figure out why he was asking? If he had loved her ( as he said he did once before ) shouldn’t he have known this? Or was that just it? Maybe now, he was second guessing it. She shouldn’t have been so surprised. But, that didn’t stop her heart from sinking to the floor anyway. “I don’t know.” That’s not entirely true, she knew. She just didn’t know how to put the truth into words. "I think it occurred to me most when the chemical rush of it wore off and I still wanted to be with you.” Realizing that probably didn’t answer his question, she tried to clarify. “I always knew that what we had was painfully good, and all consuming. It was special but I don’t think I really realized the depths of it until the honeymoon phase wore off and the reality of it all set in. Like, I’ve always sort of craved you. Physically and emotionally. To where I just wanted to be around you all the time. I wanted to see you and touch you and kiss you. For me, at least, I was madly in love. Like you were the center of my entire world. It sounds... so unhealthy when you put it that way but, that’s when it was still new. And sure, I still felt that way even as the love grew but overtime it became something different. It wasn’t just about the feelings or the physical and emotional intimacy anymore. I loved those parts. They made me feel connected to you. But once that stuff leveled out, I realized that it wasn’t just about how you made me feel. Since love’s not selfish or one sided. Or at least, it shouldn’t be. Umm―” Upon lifting a hand to her hair, Olivia combed her fingers through it as she channeled the strength to go on. “―I know, we don’t like to talk about this much but, since you asked ―― I don’t think I really ever understood how deeply I loved you until after I left. For awhile, before that, I was just holding onto you because I was so scared of letting you go. I thought that if I ever grew the balls to break up with you, you would just replace me with someone else and I couldn’t ever stomach that. So ―― holding on to you just because I didn’t want you to be with someone else was really only.... selfish of me. And yeah, a lot of other things played into all of that too. Which, we don’t have to get into ― But, being away from you, especially the last few years, while it can be miserable at times, has made me realize that like, I do love you. Because, all I really want is what’s best for you at the end of the day. I just want you to be happy. Even if that may not be with me. And, I feel like that’s what real love is all about. It’s not selfish. It’s not about you. It’s about the person you say you love. You just care about them, you support them, you’re there for them. And it doesn’t really matter if they return the favor because it’s not a condition. Like I said, it’s not about me at all. It’s about you and what you need and whatever that is, I want that for you. Which, I don’t know? Maybe that explains why I’m here...”
LOCATION: A Park WITH: @danaabrams
“So, I’ve been thinking....” No sentence by anyone EVER starts off this way and ends up being wholly good. However, Liv was fully confident in her ideas and if she were to rope anyone into doing them with her, it was Dana. Especially now that it was summer and therefore she didn’t have a classroom full of bright, smiling faces to teach. “It’s time to step awaaaay from the books and do something fun. Not that reading isn’t but, you know... I need a distraction and something tells me, -- call it a hunch -- that you'd be best suited for the task. So, tell me, what’s something on your bucket list? And, don’t you dare say bungee jumping because, that’s some crazy people stuff. And it’s a no from me.”
LOCATION: The Beach WITH: @remyblake
There was nothing like the warm, summer sun or the sand between one’s toes to spur a moment of total relaxation in the midst of a crazy life. Liv had her head in Remy’s lap and partly in the clouds, while the other blonde played with her hair, and the rest of her body was sprawled out on a towel, trying to soak up the sun. So far, their trip to the beach had been quiet and peaceful. And very much needed. At least for Liv, who was flipping through the pages of a magazine, until she settled on July’s latest horoscopes. “Ooh, here we go.” Liv spotted hers, -- a cancer -- and vaguely read parts of it to Remy aloud, “The Sun gives you a big dose of confidence this month, so trust your intuition and strike while the iron is hot!” The mere mention of the sun, forces Olivia to turn her sunglassed gaze toward it, only to steal a quick glance at Remy thereafter, “I have no idea what the heck that means. Let’s read yours. What’s your sign? Or your birthday. I feel like, I should know this.”
LOCATION: Some Lingerie Shoppe (for shits and gigs) WITH: @priorsmicah
“Remind me why we’re doing this again?” For Micah, this made perfect sense. She was in a happy and successful relationship with Sean. So, planning this surprise for him was very nice and thoughtful of her. Olivia.... on the otherhand? Had no one in particular to impress. Her love life was pretty dry and non-existent. So, there was no one to really dress up for. And while, she could very much shoot her shots with anyone, like say... a stranger, Olivia also realized lately, that she was a terrible, terrible flirt. “I mean, for you it makes total sense. Sean will love.” After grabbing a green, lacy bodysuit off the rack, Liv held it up against her friend’s chest for review. “What do we think? Green looks good on you. I give it a yes. Plus, it’s the same color as money.” Although, after glancing at the prize tag, Liv’s eyes bulged immediately and her face fell, therefore she safely tucked the bodysuit back into place, trying not to damage it in the process. “Nevermind. Waaay too expensive. Besides, why do we even dress up for them in the first place? The show typically lasts for five minutes and then it comes off. It kind of seems like a waste of time. Although, I haven’t had any action in like, a year so... it’s probably not wise to listen to me.”
LOCATION: The Porter Residence in Wrightsville Beach WITH: @ro-clarke
Olivia’s just barely begun to dress, when she hears the light chatter commencing downstairs. Scott Porter is grinning from ear to ear, elated to see Rose Clarke’s familiar, adoring face. The two have always gotten along well, Rose acting as something equivalent to a second daughter and a sister to Olivia. While, her father’s obvious glee quite truthfully warms Liv’s heart, she can’t help but roll her eyes at how over the top it is while she forces herself to hurry just so she can relieve Rose of what was sure to be a long, and drawn out interrogation. Mr. Porter would be interested to know why she didn’t come around more often, as if Rose didn’t have a life of her own. “Dad, that’s enough.” Liv’s playful glare is soon met with a smile as she spots Rosie sitting on the couch in their living room. She got there just in time to save her, hauling her friend back onto her feet with the gentle grasp of her wrist before leading her up the stairs to Liv’s bedroom. Which lo and behold, Rose had been the first and only visitor lucky enough to see. It wasn’t anything special, of course. Mostly because, Liv didn’t do a whole lot unpacking when she first moved in. She’s lived in Wilmington for seven months now and it’s already been seven too much. Or rather, living at home with her dad at twenty five had been too much. And while Liv had plans to change that, she wasn’t having much luck settling on a place she could afford, alone. She’d come to the realization that she was going to need a roommate. Preferably someone she trusts and could rely on. One person came to mind, -- and that was the girl standing before her right now. Yet Liv knew it would take some major convincing. Rose, like her, had put her life on hold to look after her dad. But all the while, had forgotten that she still had a life and she could take care of her family while also living it. “You’re early.” It’s not a complaint, but a pleasant observance. “I was still getting ready. But, we can hangout while I finish doing my hair.” Being that she just showered, her hair was still wet and thus, Olivia was debating between styling it back or simply letting it air dry. If, she went with the latter, then it would definitely buy them some time to talk and catch up. Always fun. “How’s your dad doing today?”
@oliviapcrter
LOCATION: Some Restaurant WITH: @sophiapvtton
After running the idea by Kevin first and obtaining his blessing, along with Sophia’s contact info, Olivia decided to reach out to invite Sophia to dinner. After going through the motions, a date, time and place had officially been set. Olivia arrived first on the evening of, and decided to keep the atmosphere light and non-interrogative by having a seat at the bar rather than in the dining area. The restaurant was somewhat on the fancier side but not so fancy its patrons couldn’t dress casually. And considering, Olivia didn’t know where Sophia would be coming from, whether work or someplace else during this time in the evening, she was trying her best to play it safe in every aspect. She wanted her to feel welcome, which is precisely why as soon as Olivia spotted her coming in, she stood up to greet her and politely flash her a smile. “I’m so glad you could make it. Sorry, Hi, I’m Olivia--” torn between giving her a hug or a hand shake, Olivia fell flat with an awkward wave instead. She didn’t know why she was so nervous. Maybe, she just wanted to make a good impression. To not only make herself but, Kevin proud. “I hope this doesn’t sound too forward but you are so much more gorgeous in person.” Olivia recalled seeing photos of her and Kevin in their apartment when she stopped by to visit him last. She said she was beautiful then and she still stood by that now.
kevhoffman:
“I think maybe I am a little bit, though. I’m definitely guilty of it.” Kevin laughed, reaching up to run a hand through his hair. “But yeah, I’ve definitely thought about it. To be honest with you Liv, I’ve been thinking about it a lot more recently: settling down, getting a house, starting a family.” There was that word she used, when it was your time, and that had always sort of felt like that was putting the brakes on his future plans—how was anyone sure when it was their time? The biggest push lately had been his best friend, Beau, settling down with Beth and what would soon enough be their own family. Things had happened so quickly with Beau, at least when it was put against Kevin’s relationship with Sophia, but he was head over heels for Beth and he went for what he’d wanted. Kevin had bought a ring for his girlfriend that had sat in his drawer for months because he wasn’t sure if it was their time. Sending the girl a warm smile as she nudged him gently, Kevin was genuinely happy at the thought of her spending time with Soph. Sophia would enjoy getting to know another side to his family and Liv would hopefully love getting to know his girlfriend. Exhaling out sharply as Liv questioned him about Tessa, Kevin nodded his head quickly. “I feel good. Honestly, it’s good. It’s good to have her back in my life in some capacity.” Feeling that uneasy, anxious feeling well up inside as Olivia moved on to the other side of things with Tessa, he was surprised that she was taking the girl to the hospital. Granted, the two of them had always been close but it was still a move he hadn’t anticipated. “I think that she’s a fighter, y’know? She always has been. Plus, she has to be okay, Liv. I can’t accept another scenario where she’s not.” Kevin admitted, his voice low. “But I know she’d appreciate you caring enough to do your own research. She’s always had a soft spot for you, Liv. I think it’s real sweet that you’re taking her.”
“A future with Soph?” That should’ve gone without saying. But, Olivia just wanted to be sure that, Kevin saw all of these things with Sophia and not someone else. The last thing she’d ever want her cousin to do is settle down with someone, just because he felt he had to, it seemed comfortable, or because he’d be pacifying others by doing it. Not that Olivia thought he’d rush into something for the wrong reasons. It’s just that, they were humans. And sometimes they do things without fully weighing them out. Or because they think they have to and it’ll make someone in their life happy. Yet, no one ever asks themselves what would truly make them happy. Sometimes, people just forget that it’s okay to be selfish. This was a mentality Olivia was still battling with herself. At the same time, she was only twenty four -- soon to be twenty five, and so she had plenty of time to figure out what she wanted. “You know,” at the topic of Tessa, it dawned on Olivia that she never really got his full side of the story. Least of all where their break up was concerned. Tessa confided in her about her feelings in regards to the matter when Olivia told Tessa about Romeo and sought out advice. But, Liv was always curious how he dealt with it. “Do you ever miss her?” She was only asking because, she wondered if she could relate. The two seemed pretty in love once upon a time, not unlike her and Romeo, and Olivia had always admired it. Tessa had even said to her that, you only know if you’re truly over someone when you stop wondering about the ‘what if’s’. And Olivia was interested to know if he ever stopped. It’s easier to not feel confused about a person, when that said person was out of sight and out of mind. That wasn’t the case for them now. “I only ask because, I’m not there yet. It’s been three years for me and I still miss him. Even when I know I shouldn’t. But, I guess it’s true what they say. You never really shake your first.” Olivia shrugged, and then smiled up at her cousin, grateful for the reassuring words. “That’s me. Sweet. Or so, I try to be. I’m also excellent at picking out ties now. Remind me to put that on my resume later. Should I ever pursue a career in fashion. Although, I wouldn’t hold my breath. I’m pretty basic.”
sommerstessa:
Now she’d gone and made everything overly dramatic. Inhaling and exhaling a deep breath, Tessa placed a smile on her lips to assure the woman seated across from her that everything was, in fact, okay. She was just, well, a little antsy and nervous, which she was certain Olivia caught onto by now. “Oh, my gosh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. I’m okay, I promise, it’s.. much less of a big deal than I’m making it out to be.” There was a laugh at how ridiculous she was being, and then she straightened in her seat once more. “It’s just… I need someone to come with me to the hospital. They told me not to drive myself, and my parents… I don’t really want my mom to be a nervous wreck the entire day. It just seems easier, I guess - more comforting - to ask you. If that’s okay?” It was a heavy favor to ask someone, but Liv seemed like the right person to ask. Like she was what Tessa needed surrounding her at a time like this.
It took every ounce of strength and willpower Olivia had not to jump out of her seat with an ear-splinting, resounding yes! to Tessa’s question. What she was asking of her was hardly anything to be ecstatic over. Although, ecstatic’s not really the word Olivia would have used to describe what she was currently feeling. Perhaps, grateful.... or honored... or no, touched. She was touched that, after Tessa’s parents, Olivia was the next, best comforting option. Perhaps, she knew that Olivia would take it seriously, too. She treasured Tessa more than anything and would have, without a doubt, given her the shirt off her back if she ever needed it. Accompanying her to the hospital wasn’t much different but the gravity of the overall sentiment was much larger. “Of course,” she finally answered, after stretching a hand across the table to give Tessa’s a reassuring squeeze. “Just name the date and time and I’m there. Whatever you need, it’s no problem. I’d be more than happy to take you.” Maybe happy wasn’t the right word but, she suspected Tessa knew what she meant. She was happy she trusted her this much.
riverkartal:
What does that even mean?
Often, he had asked himself the same thing, especially in the beginning. What the hell did it mean to have a hole in the heart? People always spoke about the more theoretical version of it caused by heartbreak, but not so much about the literal meaning. What did it mean? Would he ever recover? The chances were high, if handled early on according to the doctors. But River hadn’t looked after himself with great care, hadn’t followed his doctor’s orders or lived by their preaches. For someone who was so incredibly selfish in every other aspect of life, for once, River had been the opposite — he simply didn’t care. He refused to believe that something as small as that would have the power to take him out entirely, and hence, didn’t believe that changing his habits would make any difference. At first, at least. By the time the symptoms got worse more recently, his view on things had differed a bit too — perhaps now, it was more about the fact that he didn’t dare to deal with it. He didn’t dare to walk into the hospital and lend them his body to operate on. Lend them his heart. If he didn’t have the ability to trust anyone else with it, then why the hell would he give it to a doctor? In the end, the only person who he would really be willing to give it to was Romeo, which unfortunately didn’t help him much with his situation. And in the same sense, Romeo was so far the only one who had been able to witness the fear in his eyes at the idea of surgery, because he was the only one River would feel somewhat comfortable exposing his weakness to. Because that was what River was — weak.
“You’re gonna make me say it twice?” Olivia was… stirred, to say the very least. Even in her drunken state, the seriousness of his words had managed to seep through, and he instantly cursed himself for saying something at all. At least she wouldn’t remember it in the morning. And maybe, even if he wouldn’t admit so right then, a part of him actually felt relieved to have it off his chest. After having carried it around for so long, now there were two people out there who knew — Romeo, and Liv. At least for one night, or another half hour. And while he had always expected questions to follow, he had hoped that the alcohol would have made them less pressing to her, and that she would have spared him most of them. With Romeo everything had been so simple — River had fessed up, Romeo had stared him down, and not much more had been said about it. They just were. Women were harder, and much like he had expected the questions, he should have foreseen the tears as well — letting out a displeased grunt at the sight, or perhaps the sound of her emotions boiling over. “You women always have to fucking cry about everything.” A little exaggerated of course, but a general rule nonetheless. She tried to shrug it off as nothing, the laughter ringing in his ears, his head turning back away to stare at some other, completely irrelevant, point somewhere way off in the darkness. Her question was fair. Good, even. Sometimes, the best way to deal with something was to not deal with it at all. “We’re all gonna die some day.” It wasn’t really an answer to her question, because he didn’t have a good one that didn’t end with him admitting to not being cool with it at all. Even with a few drinks in his system, that wasn’t something he was ready to own up to now. “Yeah, of course he knows.” The question about Romeo was far easier to answer, jumping at it so quickly that it became obvious he was avoiding the first. “He’s always needed your worry more. He’s a fucking idiot most of the time.” And most of the time, River was the same. Wanted to be the same. Only unlike River, Romeo had no limits. He had witnessed it first-hand, and hence, River worried. What would happen if the other actually lost him to a heart disease? He honestly wasn’t sure he even wanted to know. And he knew Olivia well enough to know that voicing those concerns to her, especially right now, would only put her in a position she didn’t deserve to be in — the last thing he wanted to do was to pull her back in and make her feel like she needed to still be around Romeo just because River didn’t have the strength to stick around himself. No, it was his job to look after Romeo. Not Liv’s. Not anymore.
The complaint about her head came as a well-needed change of subject, and eyes darting back to the blonde, he reached out, one hand landing on her shoulder as if to gently hold her down. “You’re wasted. Go to sleep.” Urging her to give in to her own exhaustion, he gave a light pat, reassuringly adding, “We can talk more tomorrow.” Of course, they wouldn’t, because he had no intention of living up to those words. But in that moment it didn’t really matter, because right then, he just wanted her to give up for now and leave him to ponder on his problems on his own, much like he always did.
Her head shook at his question, denying the need for him to repeat himself. Olivia heard him loud and clear the first time. And, she definitely didn’t want to sit or stir over the painful admission twice. It was just that -- her fuzzy, polluted mind was spinning around in circles. And she wasn’t entirely sure if that was due to River’s confession or the alcohol that seemed to disorient it. Needless to say, she was confused, troubled, and saddened by the news. She refused to believe that this was it. That this was the end of the line for them. They didn’t go through all their past troubles or drama just for it to end up like this. “That may be true,” she squeaked between the force of a choked sob and a broken hiccup. “But you’re not going anywhere any time soon so please, don’t say things like that.” She would beg him if she could but, she was too tired to even try. And quite frankly, she wasn’t sure it would have much of an effect at all. Olivia didn’t have to see him to know his own mind was ripe with emotions as well. None of which he’d probably ever willingly display to her. That didn’t mean, she couldn’t spot them when they surfaced, however. He didn’t have to break down in front of her very eyes for her to know that something was off with him. That something was different. And besides that -- it was classic avoidance to shift the focus onto something else. Something more comfortable, like Romeo and his declared idiocy. Olivia recognized River’s words as a form of love as opposed to a shot at Romeo’s intelligence. He was an idiot most of the time but then arguably, so was River. “Mmhm, well, you know him better than anyone else so, I can’t pretend to disagree.” Her smile, although forced, was meant to convey the lighthearted sentiment that dripped from her honeyed lips.
“Just promise me one thing--” Olivia knew in voicing it, that River would be hesistant. Maybe even, indignant. As if choosing to believe that he didn’t owe her anything. Much less a favor. But, Olivia was almost certain he would agree to this one. Mostly because it had nothing to do with her and everything to do with the person in question. Who they both could attest to loving more than anything. At least, a majority of the time. “I probably don’t even have to say it. I already know you'll do it but I’m gonna voice it anyways just so I can know that I did --” In turning to face him, or at least the silhouette of his body that she could still make out in the dark, Olivia pursed her lips. She was trying to get the words out without shaking them upon delivery. “You won’t give up on him, or yourself. Because losing you would cripple him more than losing me, has. You both know that to be true whether you care to admit it or not. You don’t have to convince me anyway, I already know.” Which to Olivia -- wasn’t a bad thing, although the verity of it did make her slightly jealous. More than anything though, it just gave her hope. That underneath the cruelty and violence and endless fuck ups both he and Romeo were notorious for, lived actual, real people. Humans who portray themselves as untouchable gods. Not to say they weren’t godly but they were made of flesh and bone just like everyone else. Just like her. River’s heart condition was a mere prompting of the fact. That death was inevitable and while, they could cheat it all they want, for however long they want, it would inevitably skulk back up to haunt them. Only the next time, it would do so with a vengeance. Just as it did now. It was River’s choice whether he gave into it or not. Or he merely staved it off for the sake of appeasing those who loved him and couldn’t bear to see him meet his maker just yet. Olivia, included. She’d hate to see him go. Even more so, because it’d be in an entirely permanent way now. It would be different than before. Because at least then, she convinced herself as long as he and Romeo had each other, they’d survive. Thrive, even. Yet now... it was as if more than one life hangs in the balance.
“I’m holding you to that.” It wasn’t in her nature to give up on topics as serious as this one, even if it’s what he would have preferred. But, River was right. Olivia was drunk and hardly coherent enough to make proper arguments right now. She wasn’t fully aware of the gravity her words or her actions played and she didn’t want to be responsible for either, in this current state. Even if she knew she would be, and on top of that -- her decisions to succumb to unconsciousness would haunt her well beyond this simple night. She was right, of course. She might’ve listened to River, and let the subject rest long enough for him to mull over his problems alone but, her own had quadrupled the moment she woke up in his bed the next morning. Horrified by the discovery of a half naked River beside her, Olivia ripped off the sheets to reveal her own bare-clad legs. She was dressed in his t-shirt and thankfully still had her underwear on. However, her foggy brain and seemingly fuzzy recollection hadn’t done much to lessen her relief. If anything, it only fueled her guilt ridden anxiety. Needless to say, Olivia didn’t stick around long enough to fish for any answers to her questions, irregardless. She told herself she’d do that later, after she'd enough time to escape and shower, preferably in her own home, far enough away from River, the past that seemed hellbent on torturing her, and the mental images that seemed to forge their way into her membrane. Her only saving grace when she left, had been her tight-cased morals. And until she gathered up the strength to question their diligence, she’d chosen to believe they were properly maintained. After all, wasn’t the saying; innocent until proven guilty? And as far as she could tell, she didn’t feel any different, which thus helped her case in believing nothing had happened. Because truthfully, she didn’t know.
emmycahill:
Emmy, gracious host that she was, hadn’t made a move towards the door when she heard the knocking– deciding, instead, that it made more ergonomic sense to just call “It’s open!” from where she was just now sitting up on the couch. As Liv made her way inside, Emmy pushed off from where she sat and made her way toward the kitchen to grab some cups. “He’s working. I think?” Her steps faltered for only a moment as she tried to remember if he’d told her where he was going when he left. She scoffed at Liv instead. “I’d feed his body to boars, I wouldn’t bury it,” she answered matter-of-factly. “But no, he’s alive, don’t worry. Or, if he’s not, it at least wasn’t by my hand.” Returning to table with a cup in each hand, she held them up as if in surrender. “I think we’re past the point of imminent danger here.” Setting them down, she surveyed the goodies Liv brought with her– grinning to herself when she realized White Claw was not among them. “So, now that I’ve had time to process, care to tell me why you attacked the coat rack?”
“Has anyone ever told you, you have a very colorful imagination?” First, Emmy threatened to feed Olivia to the wicked witch of the west and now, it was Winnie to boars. The likelihood of either actually happening were both slim to none. Which should’ve been indication enough that her threats were empty. But, if Olivia’s learned anything recently, it’s that sometimes even the impossible happens when you least expect it. “Oh and, why thank you.” With a small laugh and now, even smaller shake of her head, Olivia accepted both cups from Emmy's grasp and set them down on the table. She was in the process of twisting off the lid to the grey goose when she heard Emmy’s next (but also quite reasonable) question. “Okay first off--” Liv teased, the traces of a smile homing in on her lips. “I didn’t attack the coat rack. That sounds ridiculous.” And it was. Hell, her eyes rolling at the mere thought was suggestion enough but, she implied as much via texts so, technically Emmy couldn’t be blamed for thinking so. “And second, you should know better than to leave Winnie and I alone together in times of crisis. Clearly, we’re a mess and we need you to protect us.” Flashes of that night reappear in her mind and it takes everything in Olivia not to burst out into a fit of humor. Emmy certainly missed a good show. “Your power went out, so we couldn’t see. The whole night we kept hearing some strange noises coming from within the apartment and tried drowning them out with the Spice Girls but it didn’t work. Then, while trying to navigate in the freaking dark I spotted something--” Liv paused, if only for dramatic effect. Yet at the same time of this all happening, her and Winnie had both been petrified out of their skins. “Which, if you haven’t already guessed yet was just the coat rack. Then Winnie, god love him, thought it would be a bright idea,” -- no pun intended -- “to throw his phone at it, with the flashlight. Seriously, I’m not kidding! It was our only source of light and then poof! it was gone---” Liv turned briefly in remembrance, stealing a quick glance at the wobbly coat rack in the corner by the door. It didn’t look that bad now but, it had certainly seen better days. “As was the poor coat rack. So yeah. Needless to say, I owe you a new one. Sorry.” With her shoulders raised in a shrug, Olivia passed the first drink of the night off to Emmy. “Now, drink up. So we can play a game.”

imagine not being in love with her
kevhoffman:
“Yeah, I figured you’d say that. Plus, you know, I’m still in an apartment and it’s great. I don’t see the rush to buy a house these days if it’s not necessary,” Kevin shrugged, still completely in love with his apartment Downtown. It had been his biggest dream as a teenager—having a cool apartment Downtown, a place of his own that was right in the center of the action. Maybe he was clinging onto it a little harder now that he was in his thirties when really he should have been considering a house, marriage, kids etc. As Liv sort of shined a light on that and verbalised his thoughts, Kevin let out a soft laugh and bowed his head bashfully. “I…yeah, I guess I should be considering finding somewhere a little more homely, huh? I really can’t be that guy clinging onto his twenties, even though I still feel like I’m fresh outta college.” As Olivia made it known that she still hadn’t met his girlfriend, Kevin practically facepalmed. It was an introduction he’d failed to make given the fact that life had gotten so hectic lately but it was one that was definitely necessary—especially since his cousin still had such a close relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Tessa. “I’m the worst, okay, yeah, let’s get dinner or lunch booked in. Of course, I’ll be there to supervise because I’m gonna have to block those embarassing stories you’ve got under your sleeve,” Kevin smirked, reaching for his phone to text the girl in question to ensure that it would be forgotten. “There we go, it’s in her hands, she’s better at taking action on these things.” Slipping his phone back into his pocket, Kevin glanced over to the girl as they walked ahead and took in her question. Had prom brought back any memories? Of course it had, it would be insane if it hadn’t—especially since Tessa was back in town now and actually attended prom. “Yeah, prom was definitely interesting. Really sorta struck home how old I am now,” he sighed out, running a hand through his hair. “It was definitely a little…weird, I guess, seeing Tessa there. Y’know, last time I went to a prom it was with her, so…yeah.”
Olivia had never meant to pry, or like their parents, put pressure on him to make a commitment when he wasn’t ready. Whether twenty five, thirty, or so on... everyone moved at their own pace. No one knew what was better for Kevin more than Kevin did. Only he could decide who, what, or when to dive head first into such lifelong commitments. “I don’t necessarily think you’re clinging onto your twenties. I mean, maybe partly but I’m sure everyone does that. And besides, you’ll know better than anyone when it’s your time. I was just curious if it’s something you ever thought about.” She offered him a casual shrug, in hopes that she could silently reassure him that she and neither would anyone else, think any less of him for taking longer to make such a big move. “I appreciate that, thank you.” Liv’s smile was still playful as she nudged her cousin with her hip and indicated the text he’d sent to Sophia on her behalf. With that minor goal checked off, they were free to focus on other things. That being Tessa. “How do you feel about that, anyway? I’m sure you’ve probably been asked that a lot and you don’t have to tell me. But, if you ever want a girl’s opinion, completely unbiased, I’ll do my best.” With her hand balled into a fist, she lightly tapped his arm with her knuckles. Not enough to hurt but to convey the lighthearted gesture. “Also, speaking of Tessa... there’s something I wanted to talk to you about. Unrelated to your love life and more so, serious.” Liv had stopped to momentarily take a deep breath. The whole situation made her worried and sad. Mostly because, she didn’t know the right things to do or say. “She told me about what’s been going on. I’m gonna give her a ride on the day of. And listen, I'm aware I know her but, not as well as someone like you does. You really think she’s okay right? I’ve been trying to do my research and I just want to be there for her without being so overbearing, you know? Because I’m sure, that can get annoying.”
rxmeos:
“Do you?” Romeo snorted coldly. “A few months can make all the difference.” It was a cruel response. One that was neither warranted nor even true. It was simply reactive. She was backing him into a corner, peeling him away and threatening to leave him exposed. Romeo was exhausted—- physically and mentally. In other words, he was weak. Susceptible to Liv’s eternally entrancing light and able to be pushed to a cliff he had no desire to fall off. He needed to protect himself. Not from her, really, but from what she would make him feel. Olivia always made him feel things. Things he detested. He had no doubt the drugs would only amplify such emotions. After all, being around the blonde was nearly psychedelic itself. She brightened him too much. Like a child who’d spent too long in a cave, her vibrancy burned—- made it hard to see and step. Even in her own despair, Olivia was sparkling. A blue diamond twinkling in lost sorrow. She’d always be able to extrapolate from him that which he preferred to keep hidden. She’d always know him. Second only to River, her ability to pull and perceive and push was uncanny. As desperately as he sought to think otherwise, the few months that had gone by failed to dampen such a capacity. For better or worse, Liv would always see him. Perhaps not in the way others did. He went to great lengths to hide the most appalling parts of his soul, though she’d gleamed it. At Harvard. Here. But her gift was discerning his pain. Because Romeo Saint James indeed felt pain. It wasn’t in the same manner as others, no. He rarely cried or wallowed or sank to his knees. It was more of a chasm—- an emptiness. It settled deep in his chest and grew until he was nearly certain it’d swallow him up. That was Romeo’s pain: a massive abyss that didn’t hurt. It hollowed him out.
It’s like you get off on it. It was a startling statement, one that brought him to a skidding halt and momentarily blinked the humanity back into his gaze. Romeo got off on violence, on being cruel, on causing ruination. Yet, he’d always assumed that alongside River and Aubrey and Winnie, Olivia was an exception. An entity he would not—- could not—- touch. For though all the cheating, lying, and fighting had been primarily to save himself, he at some level presumed, it’d been to save Olivia too. Romeo knew the damage he could do and he’d sought to preserve her from it. It was fucked: to hurt her in an effort to deliver her from pain. From the absolute agony he would undoubtedly lead her to—- dragging her through the nine circles of hell because he knew no better. Wanted no better. And yet—- perhaps he was wrong. Had been wrong this whole time. Conflating an emotional sadism for love when he didn’t—- and never had—- truly loved Olivia. He’d only loved what he could do to her. The power, suffering, and emotional turbulence he could inflict. All this time and she’d never been more than a new version of the same game. Like the women who’d come before and after, she’d meant nothing. Just another toy for Romeo to use and discard once it stopped being fun. The only reason his infatuation had lasted so long was because she’d broke free. She’d ran off the chessboard, leaving him with an unfinished match. And Romeo had to finish. It’s why he’d told her he loved her in the midst of what could only be a mental break. It was a hail mary pass to keep her tethered. To tell her what she wanted to hear not because he meant it but because he meant to hurt her. He got off on it. She might as well have slapped him. Olivia shone and she burned but he was starting to open his eyes and light had a way of showing things as they were.
His jaw tightened, teeth nearly grinding as his tongue remained silent. She’d inadvertently swung open a door he hadn’t realized was there. No, that wasn’t true. He had known it was there, he’d just sought to keep it locked with a thrown-out key. Thus, what could he say? That he was sorry? That what she said was wrong? That she was right to hate him? None would be true. In that moment, he realized he felt nothing. There was no emotional connection, no deep bond. As she spoke, a million memories flashed through his head. The moments he’d felt highest—- love drunk—- was when they were at their most volatile. He’d thrived on it. It was with stunning clarity that he grasped that there had never been a spark. The electricity between them wasn’t a chemical bond, it was something else. Something he couldn’t describe. Couldn’t name. Watching her, Romeo nearly stopped breathing. What he felt for Olivia was not and never had been love. Cinematic, romantic love. He knew that with absolute certainty now. But did that mean he never loved her at all? Had the flowers and kisses and talks and happiness that he was sure he’d felt all truly stemmed from a different place? If Romeo had the professional awareness, he would perhaps realize that he did love Olivia. In his own way—- one that was a constantly intentional and conscious. It wasn’t natural or chemical or free falling. It was purposeful—- but never any less. Unfortunately, Romeo was not a professional and he had no way of knowing such a love could exist and perhaps he’d never know. All he knew in that moment was that he hadn’t felt a deep emotional connection at all. Alas, such was his tragedy. A king of hell condemned to inhabit a mind that prevented him from realizing its own state. He could not fix it, could not change it, could not know it. Omniscient and catastrophically ignorant, Romeo was doomed to destroy himself.
And so he’d vomited.
“Don’t,” he replied, feeling sick and cleansed all at once as Olivia approached. He should’ve known she would follow him out. “Just don’t fucking apologize.” His voice was hoarse but lacking the savagery previously accompanied. She was calling for a ceasefire and with the glass-shattering revelation experienced moments prior he was all too willing to comply. “Tell them whatever you want, it’s probably true, anyway.” Pulling a box from his pocket, he produced a cigarette. Romeo didn’t smoke—- not often, at least. Barely at all. But the small sin had been kicked into a somewhat regular appearance the past couple weeks. As he placed it between his lips, bringing the lighter to the end, something in Romeo felt broken. Like a wave creeping to the shore, he could feel the wall between him and Olivia. Him and the world. Because while he didn’t know why he couldn’t feel emotionally connected to her, he knew it wasn’t normal. That something was wrong. He’d always known it, but now it was especially glaring. Inhaling the burning smoke, he let it hang in his lungs for a moment before slowly breathing it out. He was… sad. For himself and for what he lacked. “Can you drive me home?” The question was softer. “I don’t want to be alone.” And in that moment, no truer words had been spoken from Romeo. Ever. He’d given voice to a feeling that’d plagued him all his life. That of an outsider looking in who could never completely comprehend the world around him. Of someone who wasn’t “right.”
Hesitance swept across her face, before settling deep in her bones. Romeo’s mild adjuration was enough to cause a silent ripple of confusion through Liv’s chest. There had been no doubts in her mind prior to this moment, that asking her for this faint favor was likely the product of a last resort. As it shouldn’t take a genius to know or sensibly understand that, she wasn’t his favorite person right now. There were a ton of other people he could have called or turned to for this manner of help. But for whatever reason, he’d chosen her. Maybe out of convenience? And sure — perhaps weeks ago, Olivia wouldn’t have even second guessed it, much less questioned it. She would have simply done it and moved on. But over the course of the last two months, she’d developed a more sensible approach to things, including that of her interpersonal relationships. Relying on her heart to get her places had truly, never gotten her anywhere. Therefore, these days she resorted to using her head, her logic, instead. And right now, her head was urging her to tell him no, absolutely not. Not because she didn’t care that he was hurting, or that she didn’t love him enough to drop whatever she was doing in his evident time of need. No. The problem was, she did care. And she did love him all the same. Yet all her love ever did or morph into was another clusterfuck of emotions and heartache for her to inevitably sift through. She should’ve said no. She certainly wanted to. But alas she knew, deep down, when it came to someone like Romeo —- Olivia never had the heart, nor the sensibility to turn him down when he asked her for something. Even when she needed to the most. In that respect, he’d become something of a blind exception to every wall she tried to put up. Romeo could bend and break her to his will, until there was nothing left of her and she’d still never give up on him. Even on her death bed, she’d still believe in him. It was as frustrating and stupid as it sounded. And she hated it. She wished it wasn’t like that.
Granted —- what she hated more than any of the above, was learning that Romeo didn’t wish to be alone. His words echoing and telling her as much, highlighted that very, bold faced fact. It was as if he had spoken from experience and could no longer tolerate the brittling feeling on his own. Thus he needed her help, or really anyone’s to alleviate it. It was a staggering admission for someone of his nature to make, and it was also incredibly rare. Not to mention —- the way he said it, left a disconcerting, unsettling, pit in her stomach. Olivia knew and understood that there stood a magnificent difference between someone; feeling alone and feeling lonely. One was a state of being, while the other was a state of mind. And as far as Olivia could tell or gather, Romeo seemed to fall more on the spectrum of the latter. He wasn’t alone per se. He had River, he had Aubrey, he had Winnie, and yes, he even had her. He was lonely. She knew this with the utmost certainty because, looking at him now, and having as much confirmed, Romeo hadn’t spent many of his nights alone. It was obvious he’d been surrounded by people, by women, by places and things, and still felt lonely at the end of the day. No amount of drugs, or alcohol, or cars, or money, or sex could ever fix that or fill the void he was probably trying to. Not when they were seen as momentary pleasures. They came and went all too quick. As they should given the purpose they overall serve. They weren’t fulfilling because they didn’t pack much meaning, at all.
Had the two of them not grown so far apart to the point where they barely even talked about things like this, Olivia might’ve shed some light on that, too. She might’ve offered him some perspective on the matter, in exchange for nothing else. Whether or not he took that and adapted it however, was purely up to him. It was his own prerogative. But, the problem was... they didn’t talk. They don’t talk about anything, really. Everything Olivia knew or learned of him lately, she’d had to discover from those that which surrounded him. People like River, Violet, or even Aubrey. Though no one besides River had really offered her anything valuable to go off of. One piece of advice he’d given her, that struck her rather fiercely in the moment, was River telling her that if she should worry about anyone — it should be Romeo. In his words, he needed it more. And perhaps, this was precisely why? Loneliness was not unlike a disease. The longer it went untreated, the more viciously it seemed to suppurate and then ultimately manifest. It would keep coming back for more until the source of it was located and remedied. Romeo, as far as she could tell, was headed down a dark path, a slippery slope. One that threatened to consume him and maybe even push him to the brink of his own extinction. Unless he got help, -—- real help —- there’d be no hope of bringing him back. And her fears of losing him for good, really would come true. Consequently, Olivia felt (now more than ever) compelled to help him. And as a result, she finally settled on her answer. All the while hoping she wouldn’t come to regret it later. Alas, she told herself she was simply doing him a favor and it would, by no means, lead anywhere else. Once her duty had been fulfilled, she’d go on about her day, leave him be. Knowing whatever he chose to do afterwards was not under her control. Therefore, she wouldn’t feel responsible for it. This mainly for her own safety, not out of a desire to distance herself from him.
“Yeah. Okay,” She nodded, reluctantly. Further adhering to the softness of his request. “I didn’t drive though, so —-” her petite shoulders lifted in a shrug as she took a cautious step forward, ignoring the clouds of smoke that seemed to surround her in doing so. “It may help if lend me your keys. And give me your address.” It wasn’t until that moment, when her palm splayed open, that it actually dawned on her. He might’ve known where she lived but, she’d never gotten that far with him. Probably for good reason, though. The less she knew about where to find him, the less likely she’d be to seek him out when she felt lonely herself. Or worse, when she missed him.
