President Obama Designates New National Monuments in Utah and Nevada
Gold Butte and Bears Ears National Monuments protect some of our nation’s most gorgeous landscapes, important cultural sites & wildlife habitat for future generations. Check out the announcement here and learn more about the new designations below:
The 1.35 million-acre Bears Ears National Monument in southeastern Utah protects one of most significant cultural landscapes in the United States, with thousands of archaeological sites and important areas of spiritual significance. Abundant rock art, ancient cliff dwellings, ceremonial kivas, and countless other artifacts provide an extraordinary archaeological and cultural record, all surrounded by a dramatic backdrop of deep sandstone canyons, desert mesas, and forested highlands and the monument’s namesake twin buttes. These lands are sacred to many Native American tribes today, who use the lands for ceremonies, collecting medicinal and edible plants, and gathering materials for crafting baskets and footwear. Their recommendations will ensure management decisions reflect tribal expertise and traditional and historical knowledge.
Gold Butte National Monument covers nearly 300,000 acres of remote and rugged desert landscape in southeastern Nevada, where dramatically chiseled red sandstone, twisting canyons, and tree-clad mountains punctuate desolate stretches of the Mojave Desert. The brightly hued sandstone provides a stunning canvas for the area’s famously beautiful rock art, and the desert provides critical habitat. The area is popular for outdoor recreation, and visitors to the monument can hike to rock art sites, drive the Gold Butte Backcountry Byway to the area’s namesake mining ghost town, hunt desert bighorn sheep, or tour the area’s peaks and canyons on horseback.

New cover The New Yorker
Artwork: Bruce McCall: “All the new high-rises along the Williamsburg side of the East River, aimed at the sunset, are thrilling to live in, I’m sure,” Bruce McCall says. McCall, the artist behind this week’s cover, is a longtime resident of the Upper West Side. “But they will help turn Williamsburg into a seedy Brooklyn version of Second Avenue. Combined with the loss of the L train, this is a blow to a vibrant young culture and another threat to civilized middle-class living anywhere near the city,” McCall adds, cementing his role as one of our resident kvetchers.” Art Editor: Françoise Mouly Editor: David Remnick

IS SCIENCE EATING ITS YOUNG?
Background. Scientists and policy makers around the world increasingly worry about the plight of young researchers in academia, and for good reason. Competition for tenure-track positions has surged, and some early career researchers face tough odds in the quest for funding. This week Nature pleads the case for the young in a special issue.
Design challenge. How do we visually convey the idea that science is eating its young? We felt it was important to represent a system that has gone wrong, with various consequences, in an engaging way. The metaphor of a video came to mind, as young scientists find themselves trapped in framework, playing along.
We gave this brief to Megapont, an artist that specializes in isometric pixel art, and he created a fantastic scene for the cover. The retro gaming vibe gives a sense of an aging system that needs an overhaul. The detail in the artwork rewards the observant reader, with hidden treasures and references to iconic games and other worlds. And check out the tiny rat fleeing the scene - only a few pixels!
Have your say. Perhaps you are a young scientist who identifies with a cover character? Maybe the one slouched in dispair on the floor, or the one cutting out in bunny slippers? We’d like to hear your story – here’s a tumblr just for you: researchrealities.tumblr.com
