YESS, god, it's so terrifying to me to realize that the Master calmly (from what we know) accepted that the Doctor killed someone (I think that guy would have accepted literally any bullshit the Doctor did), but at the same time the Doctor himself considered the Master an "evil person" when he thought the situation was the other way around and the murder was the Master's. Honestly, if I were the Master, I would be furious

since the day i joined the doctor who fandom it’s felt like i walked inside a giant house with 4 different entrance halls and endless corridors and rooms, 100 different families live here and we all get the same post except no one really reads all of it and since you don’t know what it is you just gotta shuffle around it. i first walk into the most welcoming rooms near the entrance but while i make conversation i notice people keep bringing up stuff from room 307 on the 12.6th floor because while its seems just a spare closet it’s actually a pretty popular one and very important somehow, but to understand what’s going on there you really should have a talk with the people from corridor 63. i ignore that at first but i’m curious so i go towards the corridors with a few less but very enthusiastic tenants, but the more i walk the more i wanna keep going and going, except i have no clue where i’m going and turns out no one here really does and we’re just making up room numbers and imagining furniture. maybe i shouldn’t have ignored all that post at the door because it was probably very useful so i make my way back to it, turns out there have been people trying to organise, and some of the post is addressed to people i’ve never heard of before with crazy names such as ‘bernice summerfield’ or ‘the lumiat’ or ‘compassion’ ?? and whenever i ask someone who they are they just tell me ‘don’t worry about it’. as soon as i try to go through it i find it is all written in a foreign language that i can just about make out cause i heard people talk about this stuff but can only really grasp the general concepts instead of specific words, soon as i finish one of them and think ‘mhm that was so interesting and helpful!’ i read another letter that contradicts every single point the previous one made. so i say ‘you know what, that’s enough for now i’m content’ and walk to corridor 63 but when i decide to go into a room and open the door there is absolutely noting there. just the void. and a guy walks behind me and says ‘yeah some of the doors in this section do that, we have a few photos of what it used to look like though if you want’

the next day i’m more confused than i was before. i decide to pay next month’s rent early.

AO3 should have an Annotation Mode where you can click to view all of the author's commentary and thoughts about certain parts of the work. A little comment that says "I spent five hours researching vintage radio mechanics for this and didn't even end up using it" or "this is an ancient Hebrew literary technique!" would make my day

Good news, you can do this. You just need to learn and play around with html formatting a bit. Here's a great guide on AO3 of what you can do on the site that isn't immediately available by clicking a button on the upload page. I suggest Chapter 6, but I'll give you a quick and easy example from it. This works on both desktop and mobile, I just tested it.

So imagine you've pasted your fic into the Rich Text option at the bottom of the upload page and you want to add your annotation. (I'm using the dropdown option because it's so easy peasy and mobile friendly, but there are others.) Click the HTML button at the top-right of the Work Text section.

Find the lines of text you want to squeeze your annotation between. [Enter] to make space. And you're going to type:

<details><summary>Whatever you want the header to say</summary>Whatever you want the additional text to say</details>

(In html formatting, you'll have one command at the start telling it what to do and a second command at the end with a slash to tell it you're finished and closing out.)

So for my example if I put:

<details><summary>Side Note:</summary>I wanted to mention something here.</details>

My fic will look like this. (I use dark mode.)

And it will behave like...

Your readers can collapse it again after reading. You don't have to put header text ("Side Note:") if you think that's too distracting. Do a hyphen or something else small between the summary command if you want. Your choice.

Note that this would also be good formatting if you want to include warnings for your fic but don't want to spoil anything, thus making it optional for people to click the dropdown at their discretion.

There is A Lot you can do with html formatting on AO3. I recommend glancing over that guide. And others. Also just any site detailing html. Might work on AO3, might not, but you can try.

So, I was feeling rather grumbly about the <details> option forcing the annotation into a new line and thus breaking the text flow. But as I was complaining to @perchingowl about that (because xe got me into coding so xe gets to listen to my whining) I realised that nothing keeps me from putting the whole paragraph in the <summary> part!

After playing around with it a bit I've settled on this:

<details><summary>text of the paragraph</summary> <blockquote><em>annotation</em></blockquote></details>

As you can see it also works on mobile:

I added the blockquote and emphasis tags to differentiate the annotation from the rest of the text. Unlike La_Temperanza's hover method, which was mentioned most often in the notes, this one doesn't require a workskin, allows for longer commentary, and, most importantly, it works on mobile, without moving the clicked line to the top of your window!

Big caveat: <details> only works if the user is reading on ao3! If they download the fic as epub, all text will be there but only the <em> tags survive. If they download it as pdf the whole annotation vanishes and the arrow becomes unclickable!

(A variation of mackerel_cheese's workskin-based option may be better suited for that, but I'm now too tired to wrangle CSS, so I'll save that for another day.)

Anyway, I’m currently writing a Doctor Who fanfic about the Doctor and the Master during their Academy era. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m trying to update it as fast as I can! By the way, in case you're wondering, the glow above their heads was originally meant to represent something like their regeneration energy, I think. No, no, they’re not dying! It’s just — we know so little about Time Lords in general, so why not come up with a little headcanon? Maybe Time Lords, in certain cases, can intertwine not only their minds but also their souls? And hey, I hope you caught the basic reference next to the glow — the Time Lord heartbeat :)

For your gallifrey map, which academy is pictured? I was under the impression each chapter had their own? I might just be showing myself up as uninformed but I wanted to ask! It looks super cool btw!!! <3

Hi there! Actually, when I was researching information about the Academy, I found so many inconsistencies... Some sources mention the Prydonian Academy as a separate building located near Mount Lung. Others say that the Prydonian Academy is the Time Lord Academy, the same one used by other Chapters, and that it's located near the Capitol. And somewhere I even heard that only the Prydonian Chapter, as the elite, has the opportunity to study at the Academy of Time — which is why it's called the Prydonian Academy... So yeah, there are quite a few sources, and I think my map is just one interpretation of the canon. But personally, I lean towards the idea that there's one Academy, divided into Chapters internally. Like Hogwarts, if you will. They study in classes according to their Chapters, and they live separately too, but during breaks and in the dining hall, they can mingle. So, something like that. Hi everyone! I've finally finished my map of Gallifrey (parts of the Wild Endeavour continent, to be precise) and I can share it with you!

In all my time in the fandom, I've only found two maps of Gallifrey, and don't get me wrong — they're absolutely fantastic! But I immediately got excited about creating my own vision of this place. I don't think I've ever spent this much time on the fandom wiki before, but god, it was worth it in the end.

In many places, the map is intentionally made a bit messy, although I admit the wonkiness of the Capitol wasn't exactly planned. But to get ahead of the comments, I also want to address the colour of the water. Yes, I know that technically water on Gallifrey should look red or orange, since the rivers reflect the sky. But I felt the map would look more cohesive this way, and the elements wouldn't blend into each other too much.

About a week ago, I listened to the audio play 'Master' and to be honest, I was surprised by how little content there is for it. Same goes for the Doctor's academic era in general.

I absolutely love the dynamic between Simm!Master and the Tenth Doctor. The only thing I love more is imagining everything they went through at the Academy and how often, when looking at the Master, the Doctor remembers it.

I decided it would be interesting to include the phrase 'get out of the way' here. Like, first, in their childhood, the Doctor says it to Torvic, meaning for him to finally back off from the two of them, saving the Master. And then the Master says it to the Doctor, to protect him, and kills Rassilon.
