âLook, I got this book first fair and square. You want it? Tough.â
Elena raised an eyebrow at Annabeth curiously as if she was crazy. And she knew that she was, but it was the good kind of crazy. The kind of crazy that could lead to a pillow fight. âWhat kind of book did you get??â
âThe History of the Greek, Roman and Egyptian Empires, ergo, how they were separate and then all came together somehow eventually,â the blonde answered. âWhy? I told you this book was mine and I got it fair and square.â
âReally?â Annabethâs eyes lit up. Usually sheâd head straight to the library â that place was like her second home, and she couldnât go a day without heading there and reading some books. Granted, sometimes she had homework and that was the best place to study, but the masses of books were like heaven to her. Just the word âbooksâ made her excited sometimes. âAre you kidding?! Iâd love to go! Do they have books on everything?â
âAnything and everything involving history. I think they will have everything we need to complete our projects!â Mutny said smiling brightly as she linked arms with Annabeth happily. Mutny spent everyday at the museum library as well either studying, reading or even typing up papers on her laptop. She had complete silence there and sometimes even her little sister Mery joined her. It was like a sanctuary where the girls could get a way from everything.
âGreat! Letâs head over there, then!â Honestly, if Annabeth didnât have a reputation to uphold as one of the most serious and mature people in the school, she would have been skipping the entire way to the museum. Besides, it had actually been a while since sheâd been to the Museum of Natural History â the last time she went there, it was with her dad. It had been a good day out with herself and her younger half-brothers, but theyâd been too young to understand anything. Now she got to go with someone who she could actually talk to about stuff, and have way more fun.
She shot Eli a small smile at the encouragement, nodding at him in thanks âI just⌠we try so hard, you know? We try so hard for them, and to keep ourselves safe, and⌠I donât know, it just feels as if we donât get enough in return sometimes. Not enough.â She sighed. âBut I guess I shouldnât complain, huh? I mean, everything weâve done⌠weâve saved the world twice. We get bragging rights.â
She smirked a little over at him as they reached the door, kicking it open with one foot. âIâll ask about the Jasmine oil, though. Maybe one of the Hermes kids could grab me some next time they decide to go on a spree, or something. Or maybe Chiron would have someâŚâ
Ίâ {Thereâs no way Chiron doesnât have any. Heâs always prepared.}Â
Eli let his own smile tug his lips as they entered and made their way towards a long, cedar wood table with several windows to its left.Â
{Iâm so glad they replaced the chairs in here. If I had to spend one more second dying on the flat, wooden ones, I may have just finished the deed, myself.}
ââŚThatâs a very good point.â
She laughed a little at Eli as they made their way over to the table, placing the books down and stretching her arms and back out a little.
âNo need to be so melodramatic, Eli. The chairs werenât that uncomfortable⌠and if you were uncomfortable, someone elseâs lap was generally the next option. For me, at least.â She looked at the chair in the room. âI think someone suggested we use beanbags instead of chairs. How ridiculous is that?â
Annabethâs eyebrows rose at that. Would Eliza go to prom with him? That sounded so innocent, so sweet, so Percy, that she smiled.
âDo I think so? Of course I think she would! Honestly, thereâs no reason to think that she wouldnât go to prom with you, Luca. Youâre very good friends, arenât you?â Then the implication hit her, and she smirked. âOf course⌠if you want to get closer than that⌠Iâm sure I could put in a good word ahead of you to her parents. I mean, Jason and I, weâre good friends. And Piper and I are very close. Iâm sure I could convince them to let you get in a good couple of dates, maybe extend the curfew time after prom by an extra hourâŚâ
Lucaâs face turned so red, he looked like he might actually die of embarrassment. Was his mother actually suggesting that heâŚ? No, he must be miss understanding her, after all, Eliza was her god daughter and heâd seen her be just as protective of her and she was of him and his little sister, Zoey. Still, he sputtered for a good minute.
âOh my Gods, Mom! I respect Elizabeth very much as a friend and a fellow warrior and Uncle Jason loves me but he would quite happily violently stab be to death if I tried anything like⌠that, with Liz. Actually, forget Uncle Jay, Eliza would probably stab me!â
Annabeth chuckled. Honestly, it was at times like these where she realised just how much like his father Luca was. She reached over and ruffled his hair lightly, smirking at him.
âLike what? Like taking a good friend on a date â just hanging out? Honestly, Luca, what do you think dates involve?â She chuckled again, shaking her head. âIf you think thereâs nothing more than friendship there for you, Luca, thatâs fine. Thatâs perfectly fine, okay? But to answer your question, yes. I very much do think that Eliza would want to go to prom with you. Just make sure to take lots of pictures.â
@olympusarchitect:
Annabethâs eyes widened at that. You can always trust a place with air conditioning? That sounded so flawed in multiple ways, the little girl didnât even know where to start. Though, it made her feel better that the lady was joking.
If her dad was working with people who actually believed that sort of stuff, how stupid was the world?
âWell, as long as Iâm getting ice cream, itâs all okay with me.â She gave the woman a smile, flattening her hair with her free hand to correct how it had been messed up. âI think itâs partially to do with all the scary monsters after me.â So nonchalant, and yet she sounded so serious.
âScary monsters?â
Was this something that Marina was allowed to get mixed up in? She had a sinking feeling that Annabethâs father wouldnât be very pleased with her style of caretaking. First ice cream, then invasive questioning? Mr. Chase was a man of standards, and Marina was more of a freewheeling kind of gal.
Sheâd figured that Annabeth would have been just as stuffy as her dad, but she hadnât anticipated how sad it would be to see a child that was so stern.
âWhat do you do when the scary monsters come?â
Annabeth looked up at the woman, grey eyes inquisitive for a moment as she wondered exactly why this woman was asking so many questions. Was she a monster? Was she working for a monster? Was she trying to label her as crazy and finding evidence to support it? Was she trying to find reasons to get her taken away from her dad? So many questionsâŚ
âI try to hide,â she answered. âNot many usually come, and most of the time theyâre in my dreams, but when theyâre coming for me, I run and hide. Daddy sometimes fights them, and sometimes he runs with me. He always says that heâs trying to keep me as safe as possible.â She paused for a moment, taking in a deep breath, like a child about so say a long speech. Then she said: âSpiders come and attack me at night and daddy has to scare them away for me.â
@olympusarchitect:
An eyebrow rose when the other blonde cut off, as if the other guys had gone blank for a good few seconds before his voice started working again, going back into a completely different subject. How rude. It was almost as if heâd gotdistracted, and there was nothing to get distracted by around here. Okay, granted, he was probably ADHD, but even Percy didnât get this distracted.Gods.
âMy question was not targeting you. I was just attempting to better understand the workings of a jackassed maleâs mind, and you were the perfect test subject. That is all.â
Having been faced the opposite way, Annabeth didnât exactly notice Henry walking by until heâd already passed them, and her eyes widened, her mouth already opening to call to him before she even registered what she was doing.
âHenry! Henry! Hey!â
Henry, in all honesty, still wasnât used to being called by name when he was on the move. Having a one-track mind and a busy schedule often inhibited his social life back at home. But this wasnât the inn. This was Camp Half-Blood, where everyone was family no matter what. Heâd made some pretty amazing friends out of his half-siblings, friends who just understood why heâd rather sense than speak, rather touch than talk.
Not to say that he was a physically affectionate person, of course. His eyes flickered over to the girl, and warmth entered his eyes. He rarely smiled these days; the emotion in his eyes was usually the best that people got.
âAnnabeth, hi,â he responded politely. And then, he caught sight of Danny, and his eyes narrowed, expression souring into one of distaste. âI see youâve met Danny.â
Danny didnât trust himself to speak. Not while Henry was around. He was 200, no, 500% convinced that his voice would crack horribly, and then both of them would laugh at him. Insolent jerks. Didnât they know who his parentsâ?
A sickening pang of sorrow. Right. Better not go off on that train of thought. He swallowed, Adamâs apple bobbing, and raked a hand through his hair, posture shifting so that he was leaning heavily on his left foot. He didnât care that Henry was there. Of course he didnât. He was SLOUCHING.
âHey! Howâs everything going?â Just the appearance of a fellow camper â Henry, the son of Hephaestus â made Annabeth smile. Someone she was more familiar with, and someone who wouldnât be a jackass to her. After all, he wasnât an Ares kid, and it seemed as if he had been brought up with respect.
When his expression soured, however, a smirk grew on her face. âOh, so youâve met the Roman before, huh?â Of course, Henry was usually the one they sent over as a representative of Hephaestus to Camp Jupiter. He was probably the one who knew the Romans best â who to talk to, who to stay away from, and all that. And if he didnât like Danny⌠well. That said more than enough about the guy.
âNot all mutants have to be made mutants â they could be, you know, born that way. Not just the product of a mad science experiment.â
Gods, if only she knew. It was a shame that Annabeth technically wasnât allowed to tell her anything, because technically she knew all different types of mutants.
âWell, mutants can be heroes too, you know. Like the X-Men. All of those students at the academy were mutants, right? But they were also heroes as well. Not necessarily magic powers⌠but Storm could control the weather. Wolverine had retractable claws. There was even Magneto, who was an evil mutant.â
Did she have a favourite hero? Yes, my boyfriend â he can control water and speak to horses and is the most loyal guy Iâve ever met. âProbably Bruce Banner. Or even Tony Stark. Those two are incredibly intelligent, and both technically created their own powers â Stark created the Iron Man, and Banner created the Hulk, even if it was accidental.â
âI guess thatâs fair. Sounds like youâre into smart guys. Which is cool. Nothing wrong with that.â
Rikki paused. She should share her favorite superhero. Keep the conversation casual. Distract her. Just keep talking until she can make her escape.Â
âI think I like Thor the best. For one thing, heâs got a hammer. And awesome powers. He controls lightning, for crying out loud! But heâs what you just said. He was born that way. A demigod, I think? Heâs a god. I donât know details, not that the difference really matters anyway. But at least a god, and I think that he must be the strongest out of all of them then, right?â
âWell, not necessarily into smart guys, but I appreciate them. I can associate with them more easily than I can with someone like Thor, or Superman, or whatever. Their personalities make more sense to me.â
Her reasons for liking Thor seemed⌠simple, she supposed. Normal. The controlling lightning thing amused her, because she knew people who could control lightning and were probably way cooler than the Norse god. Smarter too, most likely.
âWell, if you mean strongest physically, then yes, possibly. Maybe not necessarily as strong as The Hulk, but itâs possible he could be the strongest. Mentally, I donât feel as if heâs the strongest. Not at all. Stark would be able to outwit him easily, I think, and letâs not forget that the man built his own suits. And then thereâs Banner who, unintentionally, created the Hulk. Both those guys could beat Thor with their eyes closed if it came to brain power. Even Romanoff, Black Widow, whoâs technically a spy, could outwit Thor pretty easily.â
@rachellizdare
âRachel, Iâm pretty damn sure the Spirit of Delphi does not tell you what Percy would like me to wear on our next date.â
âAnd how would you know what the Spirit tells me? I think you should hear me out on this.â
âThe Spirit gives prophecies and tells the future â it doesnât tell us was other people feel and think, okay? Gods Rachel. Telling me what Percy wants me to wear would just be damn creepy.â
Annabethâs eyebrows furrowed in confusion. She couldnât remember where they were supposed to be headed? Somethingâs wrong here. âWhere, exactly, in Maryland are you guys from?â she asked slowly, beginning to get more and more suspicious. She didnât really like how this conversation was turning.
âUhâŚumâŚâ More frowning. Claire gulped. âI thinkâŚ.â She bit her lip nervously, her hands wiping themselves off on her jeans. âI..I canât really remember.â She finally mumbled.
That put Annabeth on edge immediately, and she took a step back. âHow old are you?â she demanded. If this girl was a monster, surely she wouldnât be able to come up with something like that on the spot â only mortals and demigods really knew their ages and birthdays off-hand.
âI guess it let me know from the start that I wasnât exactly hersâŚâ She sighed a little, thinking back to all of the times where sheâd just been plain ignored â all of those screams for help that werenât answered, all of those monster attacks that were automatically blamed on her without allowing her to explain, everything that led to her running away⌠all because of her step-mother. It had been fine when it was just herself and her dad, honestly. âBut you donât need to apologise for it. Iâm who I am today thanks to all of that, soâŚâ And she didnât regret it one bit.
âBut itâs okay to miss him. He cared for you,, even if you werenât his own. Youâre allowed to miss the people you love. No one says you shouldnât.â Gods, who thought Annabeth would be talking about love to another demigod? Then again, it was only familial love⌠it wasnât any of that mushy stuff that people associated Aphrodite with, she supposed.
âI still think I should. No one should go through that.â It was hard enough not having a mom that could talk to you, having a stepmother that just didnât treat her like even a person sounded worse. She wouldnât wish it on anyone, especially Annabeth, whoâs been nothing but nice to her. âYou still shouldnât have had that done to you. Itâs not right.â Prim couldnât even imagine her mother doing anything bad to her. Zoning out was way different from ever hurting her intentionally. Even then, she wouldnât hold that against her. She never has.
âI know. I know itâs not bad to miss someone. I just feel guilty. My real dadâs probably fuming with what Iâm saying right now. I wouldnât blame him.â Apolloâs kid talking about how much she loved the man who helped raise her, it might not settle well with him. But she knew she had the right to her feelings. Itâs not like Apollo was the one letting her put flowers in his hair or the one that picked out her name.Â
âJust because no one should go through it doesnât mean that the Fates wonât let it happen to us. The gods do what they do, and they try to help, but sometimes they care more about character building than their demigodsâ well-being.â She shrugged. âWe suffer because they need us to be strong. âTough loveâ doesnât even cover it, really.â
Annabeth chuckled at that, rolling her eyes. âHonestly? I wouldnât worry about Apollo. Just a quick prayer to Lady Artemis should shut him up â after all, many of his own children turned to her because they felt as if he didnât care and abandoned them. I know demigods that favour their mortal families far more than their godly ones. You shouldnât feel bad about feeling that way. Itâs not as if heâs treated you all that well, anyway.â So much for not getting any more gods to hate me.

âOh yeah, you totally should. From what I last heard, they tossed a coin and Percy got Nico on his team for the next game, and usually when that happens whoever loses gets the entire Athena cabin. Having you around would certainly make it more interesting when it comes to playing Capture the Flag.â Not that I really want to be on a team with Percy or anythingâŚ
âWell, between you and me, Iâd stick around just to see you kick Percy and Nicoâs butts. I mean, theyâre both pretty amazing on the battle field, but the entire Athena cabin? I want to be on your team.â
âWell⌠people would try to say that you count as a child of Hades and put you on Nicoâs team, but I say youâre Roman. And Roman doesnât count. Welcome to our team!â She put an arm over Hazelâs shoulders. âWe are going to kick some Percy and Nico ass with you on our side. Letâs make them regret ever thinking of facing us.â
+Â olympusarchitect
She pursed her lips, narrowing her eyes at him. âWell itâs a bit late for sorry, Luke. You became allies with a Titan, Luke, and your alliance set a whole load of things in motion that have nearly killed me. You are responsible for the deaths or more than 50% of living demigods, whether at the camps or those who switched to Kronos, or even those who were killed trying to make their way to camp! And itâs not just in the Battle of Manhattan, or the Battle of the Labyrinth.â She took a step forward and poked him in the chest⌠hard. âYour stupidity led to Gaia beginning to rise⌠with the giants. Fucking Hades, Luke, I ended up in Tartarus, fighting for my life with a broken ankle. So sorry doesnât and wonât ever cut it â if you want me to even consider caring again, youâre going to have to do a lot more than just say âsorryâ.â
âDo you think I donât know that I fucked up? I got hollowed out and worn as a meat suit! Or did you think that was my idea? Iâm not saying itâs not my fault! Iâ not saying Iâm without guilt or regrets! Iâm saying sorry it all I have to offer right now, but tell me what you want me to do, Annabeth. I will do anything you want. Anything. What do you want? Do you want me to bleed? Suffer? To die again? Iâll give you that! I know itâs what Thalia wants.â
Annabeth pursed her lips, a deep frown on her face as Luke spoke. She didnât hate Luke â why in Hades would she? â but he had betrayed her. Hurt her. Done something to her that family shouldnât do. And yet, she couldnât bring herself to hurt him. She wasnât vengeful like Thalia â sure, she was mad, but not vengeful. Heâd died once to save them all. âDying again would be a cowardâs way out. You need to prove that you deserve my forgiveness. You need to earn it. You need to show me and everyone around me that youâre actually sorry, and not just saying it.â
+ olympusarchitect
âAnd you honestly suspect that my brother would have left behind any clues that would have led it to being him? Honestly â heâs smarter than that. If you think itâs him, itâs not.â
âHe doesnât really need to leave clues, Annabeth, we sit around the campfire and laugh about our pranking successes. His stories almost always match herâs.â
âAnd you donât think heâs smart enough to lie about something like this?â Though, Annabeth was frowning now. She was going to have a long talk with Malcolm about this, because now she was beginning to think that this was partly his fault. If not definitely.
âAnd do you know that? Are you one hundred percent sure that if you travel all the way to Chicago and back, even one time, youâll still be human and not a shadow? Do you, Nico? Because I donât think youâve even been allowed to try shadow travelling to the other side of camp.â
âBecause Iâve traveled all the way to Chicago and back several times over the past few weeks? The first time was an emergency, before you yell at me for that.â
âYouâve... shadow travelled to Chicago... multiple times?! No, I donât even care about the first visit -- I care more about the multiple visits that followed.â
âNot yourââ She narrowed her eyes at him, shutting her book. âLook, di Angelo, books are interesting and informative, and you need to at least learn to alert people when you arrive at places! This is your fault!â
Nico cocked an eyebrow, leaning against the wall. âIâm here. I have arrived at this place.â
âCut the sarcasm. You tell people as soon as you arrive. Make a loud noise or something. Wear a chain of bells around your neck.â
Annabadass Chase.
