Thinking again about Hodari having to leave his wife trapped in the northern mineshaft in Bahari, not knowing if she was dead or alive, to run all the way to Kilima (through the aqueduct, past the mines and pond, through the meadow) with his small daughter in his arms, her leg crushed, in the middle of the night; finding someone to help her, banging on doors to find people to help him, running all the way back, spending hours more shifting rocks and digging desperately trying to reach the woman he loves but it’s too late. Maybe it was always too late

Another thing I like to think about is that. We only hear about this from Najuma. Who was a small child and therefore a) not the most reliable narrator anyway (memory not fully developed) and b) not an actual witness for most of this and was told about it later, by people who care about her. And you’d tell her the quickest, cleanest version of her mother’s death, wouldn’t you? I would. She’s an intelligent child and she knows about this stuff so it has to be plausible but you’d tidy it up a bit. To be kind.

Anyway I am longing to hear Hodari’s version of the same events even though it might be brutal

i'll be honest though, while najuma definitely wasn't there and i can definitely buy hodari not telling her the truth or at the very least a very scrubbed clean truth, najuma does still know a lot about mining for her age. leta taught her a lot and it's implied that hodari did too before the accident. like you said, she's intelligent and honestly, i think she would know better. she may not know the exact truth, but i'm willing to guess that what she says isn't just based on what hodari told her. actually, we don't even know what he told her. when najuma tells the player what happened, she doesn't mention who, if anyone, told her that story. that could still be the case, but we just don't know.

i'd definitely understand hodari opting to just say something like "she didn't make it" and najuma filling in the blanks based on what she knew at the time and learned later on as she got older.

regardless, i also think it'd be really nice to hear what happened from hodari's perspective :') tbh, i don't think najuma is meant to be an unreliable narrator in this regard, but it can still be taken that way since she wasn't there and we never hear hodari say it himself... ough... do you have a theory for what happened!
