okay maybe this is the wrong place for it but w/e this is the closest thing i have to a medical blog right now

so the whole dare campaign and the say no to drugs stuff is literally not designed to work. it has not been proven to do jack shit to get kids to make educated decisions about drugs for psychological reasons that only worsen if the kid is predisposed to addiction; most people will not develop the kind of risk analysis behaviors they need to “say no to drugs” until their mid to late 20s. it’s basically the “hold my beer watch this” thing. as i’m sure you know some people never stop saying “hold my beer watch this”.

what it is designed to do is get parents off the education system’s ass because it makes them feel better. it’s like a home security system. it does just about jack shit apart from tell people “hey there’s something of note here BUT DON’T DO IT BECAUSE YOU MIGHT GET ARRESTED” and the people with the system feel better about it.

which brings us around to what just-shower-thoughts pointed out. in some cases, in at risk of addiction persons, these campaigns actually expose them to knowledge of drugs earlier on and may (stress on the may because there’s no proof of this, just theories) subsequently cause an earlier onset of addiction. without knowledge of drugs they might never have sought them out in the first place.

so why don’t we have something that works better in place? for the same reason we don’t have anything better than security systems. people are going to do what they want to do, and we can’t keep all of society under 24 hour surveillance.
