This feature receives a lot of abuse and because of this not many people pay much attention to direct messages, however they can still be handy from time to time. in order to message a user they need to be following you. To send the message navigate to their profile and click the "Message" button. To view the messages you have received just click the "Messages" link on your homepage. ReTweets Retweets or RT's as they are more commonly know as are a way to share tweets you like with your followers. Retweets will appear in your timeline like any other tweet, however you can view only Retweeted tweets by clicking the "Retweets" link on your homepage. There are two different ways to retweet a tweet you think is worthy. The easiest way is to simply click the "Retweet" button found on the tweet itself. The other way to do it is to copy the tweet and create an @ mention with letters RT in front of it then paste in the tweet. Doing it this way is know as the old way and will appear in the users Mentions tab instead of the Retweets tab. Favorites Twitter gives you the ability to save tweets to a Favorites list. By adding a tweet to your favorites list you are able to quickly find it again. Add a tweet to your favorites by mousing over it and clicking "Favorite". Once you have a tweet in your favorites list, the list will appear on the sidebar of the home page. Lists Twitter lists are a way of organizing people you follow into groups so you can easily view their tweets. Lists can either be marked public or private. If you create a public list other users can follow the list and see everyone thats on it. You can create a new list or manage the lists you have created by clicking the "Lists" button on your homepage. To add people to a list, navigate to their profile and click the button that looks like a bullet list, a drop down menu will appear and you can select the list or lists that you would like to add the user to. If someone has added you to a public list that you do not wish to be on, you can remove yourself by blocking the creator of the list.

I personally prefer to use bit.ly as you are able to monitor how your link is preforming around the web. You should avoid services that offer to pay you for using their url shortening service. Your Twitter followers will not be happy when they click these links as they will be presented with ad's before they are able to see the content you have shared and this will greatly effect your engagement rates. Tweet Frequently Tweeting once a day is not enough, once an hour is more in the ball park. The more often you tweet the more chance you have of being seen. There is such a thing as to much though, always try to leave at least a few minuets between your tweets.

Auto follow is a horrible idea, even if you come across a service that claims to offer it don't give in to temptation. No matter how "smart" the auto follow system claims to be you will end up having to spend a lot of time cleaning up your twitter account. Automatic Direct Messages A lot of people use automatic direct messages in an effort to gain traffic to their websites or referrals for their affiliate programs. Most people hate these messages they are very impersonal and all to often do not apply to the reader. If you use automatic direct messages you could be doing more harm then good and in my opinion should stop right now and never consider using them again.

How to hack a wireless router with backtrack 5

So you want to use Backtrack 5?

I'm seeing a lot of my viewers still use Windows, and since I haven't posted any Windows information yet (don't worry, I will!) I felt like posting a how-to on dual-booting (or single-booting) the penetration testing suite I use called Backtrack 5 would be very helpful to everyone viewing my blog.

Here's a quick list of the things you'll need to install Backtrack 5:

a USB stick with at least 2gigs of free space (mine is 8gigs), I would suggest 4gigs as a minimum.

a computer to install it to (you can dualboot, or fresh install and overwrite a disk)

an Ethernet Internet connection makes this easier in the updating stage.

First we're going to have to format your USB stick-drive (or whatever you want to call it... pendrive or stick) to "FAT 32" (File Allocation Table) which is not the normal format most USB drives use. The default is usually NTFS (New Technology File System) and supports higher file sizes and is in general faster than FAT 32. You can read more on the differences here. Plug in your USB stick to a computer that can connect to the Internet (I'm assuming, since you're reading this, that you can download and transfer files) and go to "My Computer" on Windows, or your respective file system directory. I'm using Windows XP SP3, so the screenshots and most of my references will be based upon the look and feel of that. If you have a different OS then I'll try to help you troubleshoot it, but I don't have much experience in iOS or Vista at the moment. The USB pendrive should be visible here.

When you can see the drive, right click it and a "format" option should be available. Click on that option. Click the "format" option. Once you've clicked it, a GUI (graphical user interface) panel should pop up much like this: View on Windows XP SP3 Make sure you don't have any sensitive information or files you want on your drive... this will completely erase it. Before you do this, save all your files on this drive! My options are already set like I want, but the "File System" should be "FAT32" and not "NTFS," if you format it as NTFS, it will be pointless. Leave the "allocation unit size" default and name your "volume label" whatever you want; I kept mine the same. Once you click "START" it will remind you all information will be deleted... so again SAVE ANY FILES YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE FOREVER. It shouldn't take long to format, and a "format complete" pop up will come up. Good job, step 1 is down! Now to get Backtrack 5 up on your drive... Go to the Backtrack download page and just click the "download" button in the middle of the screen; you don't need to enter an email if you don't want to. You don't have to register, but go ahead if it interests you. The window will change to a selection area of the different "flavors" of Backtrack 5. Below is a quick explanation of each:

The "arch" is for what bitset you want to use. Since I have a bad laptop at the moment, I use 32bit, but if you want 64 bit, go ahead and select that option.

The "image" is the type of file  you want to download. Download the "ISO" for now since we're going to be using that one.

The "download" is how you'll be downloading it. If you know how to torrent, you can do that, but otherwise just choose "direct" and it will download it off the Backtrack 5 server.

Click the download button, and above the selection screen another interface will appear and tell you it's loading. After a few seconds, it will ask you again if you wish to register. Go ahead or don't, it doesn't matter. After you click through that selection, the download should pop up. Go ahead and save it to your desktop. Sorry the picture is fuzzy, click on it for an enlarged version. Now we need to download the program to put this ISO on our formatted pendrive. It's called "UNetbootin" and can be downloaded for Windows here, Mac OS here, and if you're reinstalling from Linux, grab the Linux one here. Once it's done downloading from Sourceforge, just run the program (it requires no installation) and you will be confronted with an options page.

Go ahead and ignore the top selections and click the hollow circle next to "Diskimage," then click the "..." button to the far right and navigate and select the ISO you just downloaded (it should be on your desktop like I instructed). Leave the "type" on USB Drive, or select that option if it is not already selected, and have the correct drive selected as well (you can view which drive it is in My Computer). Next, click "OK" and it should skip downloading files (we're using an ISO, so no downloading necessary), extract and copy, install the bootloader, then complete the installation (this may take some time... just be patient).

After it installs it will give you the option to restart or cancel. If you want to install BT5 on your current computer right now, just click the restart to begin, or click cancel and plug in your USB stick to the computer you want to install it to and restart or turn on that computer. When your computer is starting up, mash the key to enter boot options (mine is F10, most are F12 as far as I know) and a boot option loadup should appear. Select the top most Backtrack option (should say something like text mode; also available are forensics mode, memtest mode, and others, but don't worry about those). The Backtrack 5 background should appear with no icons or anything; push the F8 key and it will continue. Your computer should then load up in a black screen with white text cascading down (this is Backtrack loading off your USB) and you should be confronted with a command prompt line. If it asks for a login, the default is "root" and password "toor" but for now it shouldn't. Type in "startx" to load the Backtrack GUI (graphical user interface) with one icon in the top left that says "Install Backtrack" with the Backtrack icon. Double click this. This is the installation of Backtrack 5 onto your computer so you can run it off the HDD (hard disk drive) and not the USB stick. Go through each setup configuration (time zone, language, and keyboard setup) until you reach a prompt like the one below (not my prompt; mine is Windows XP, but I couldn't get a screenshot of mine).

If you want to dual-boot, make sure the top selection "install them side by side" is selected, if you select a different one it will ERASE YOUR HARD DRIVE AND START FROM SCRATCH. If you want to solo-boot Backtrack, select the second option "erase and use entire disk" and select the correct HDD. If you're dual-booting it should tell you it's creating a new partition (space for the new operating system) and might take a while to do so, just wait for this to finish. Once this is done a "ready to install" page will show. Click on the "advanced" tab in the bottom right and make sure "install boot loader" is checked. Mine is "/dev/sda/" whereas my XP is "/dev/sda1/" so make sure they aren't the same or your computer is going to be quite messed up. After that is done, click "install" and it will begin. The installation pauses on 99% for quite some time, so don't worry (most of the installation is on 99% which isn't really the point of an updating bar). After it's installed, click the "restart now" button that pops up, or if you don't want to for some reason click the "continue testing" button. If you're dual-booting, once you boot up your system it should ask which operating system you want to use, select Backtrack 5 and push F8 again when the background shows up (don't panic because you can't do anything, your computer hasn't frozen, this is how BT loads) and wait for the black loadup screen to come up with cascading text. The default login is again "root" as the username and "toor" (root backwards) as the password. Change your password by typing "passwd [new password]" and it will update your password to whatever you want. Do this now for extra security. Next, on the next screen type "startx" to load up the Backtrack GUI so we can actually use our penetration suites. Lets do our first terminal usage with Backtrack to upgrade and update the already installed suites (collection of programs). Open a terminal (the black box with a ">_" in it on the top or bottom bar depending on whether you downloaded Gnome or KDE) and type "apt-get upgrade" For me everything is upgraded and it should tell you that. Next, type "apt-get update" and it will update all your packages installed. Mine only updated 3,473 kbs, but some others may not be updated for some reason. Run these frequently to get the most updated versions of all your programs! I run it once every few days. That's it. You should have Backtrack 5 working on your computer or laptop and should be able to dual-boot if you want that. Post below any issues and I'll respond!

How to dual-boot Windows 8 and Windows 7

One of the big barriers to upgrading to Windows 8 is that Windows 7 is so good. For keyboard-and-mouse users, Windows 8 isn’t a hugely compelling upgrade — and without judicious use of third-party apps to bring back the Start menu and other core Windows 7 features, Windows 8 can actually make the desktop experience worse. But what if you want to try out Windows 8? What if you want to take the Metro Start screen for a spin? (Who knows, maybe you’ll like it.) What if you want to give Windows 8 a chance? One method you could use is virtualization, where you quite literally have Windows 8 open in a window on your Windows 7 PC. Virtualization isn’t really viable if you’re looking to truly experience Windows 8 and everything that it entails, though. For that, you need to dual-boot.

How to dual-boot/multi-boot Windows 8 with Windows 7

This guide assumes that you already have Windows 7 (or XP or Vista) installed. If you’ve already got Windows 8 installed, and you want to install Windows 7 as an additional OS, this guide might still work — but no guarantees. First things first, you should backup any important documents. You shouldn’t lose any files during this process, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. See our Backup Masterclass for tips on how to backup your data efficiently and securely. With that out of the way, hit Start, type diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. This will open the Disk Management console. You should see a big (or small) list of all the drives currently attached to your computer. Find the drive that Windows 7 is installed on (it should be marked as “Boot” or “System”), right click it, and click Shrink Volume. In the window that pops up, you ideally need a figure that’s around 50,000MB (50GB). If your hard drive is very full, this might not be possible. In theory the minimum install size for Windows 8 is around 20GB, but I really wouldn’t proceed without at least 30-50GB. If Disk Management refuses to shrink your volumes, you may need to try a third-party tool such as Paragon’s Hard Disk Manager. Once the volume has been shrunk, a black, “Unallocated” region will appear at the end of the drive. Right click this and select New Simple Volume. Click through the dialog windows and give the new volume a memorable name such as Windows 8. Don’t change any other settings. This process will format the new partition, which may take a little while.

Installing Windows 8

At this point, all you really need to do is install Windows 8. You might opt to install a full version of Windows 8, or you can grab a 90-day evaluation copy. Either way, you want to slot the DVD (or USB stick) into your computer, reboot, and begin the installation process. (You may need to change the boot priority of your DVD drive/USB stick, which can be done in the BIOS). When given the option, select a Custom install (not Upgrade). On the next screen you’ll be shown a bunch of partitions/volumes. Select the one that’s labeled Windows 8 (or whatever you called it). Be absolutely certain that you’ve selected the right volume, then click Next. The slick Windows 8 installer will now do its thing. It will reboot once or twice, but eventually you’ll be greeted with a multi-boot menu that allows you to select which OS you want to load (Windows 8, Windows 7, or any other OSes that’re installed). Windows 8 will load by default after a few seconds, but you can change it back to Windows 7 by clicking “Change defaults or choose other options” at the bottom of the screen. Voilà: You now have a PC that dual-boots Windows 8 and Windows 7.

How to use Twitter

The ageless revolution has befallen upon us, whether we like it or not. What started as a small project for the employees of the small podcasting company Odeo has taken the world by storm, gaining more than 500 million followers since its inception in early 2006. The popular social networking website and micro-blogging service allows users to post their latest updates in a quick, burst-like fashion of 140 characters or less. It’s basically mass texting via website and is probably one of the simplest things you will ever do — all you need is a Twitter account and you’re well on your way. Here are some quick steps, pointers, and tidbits to get you up to speed. To tweet or not to tweet: there really is no question. Sign Up. Go to www.twitter.com to sign up. Enter the appropriate information (full name, email and password) on the right-hand side before clicking “Sign up for Twitter.” The website will then ask you to verify the information, choose a username and agree to the Twitter Terms of Service before proceeding. There will also be a checkbox to keep you signed in on whatever computer you’re using as well as a checkbox for tailoring your tweets based on the websites you visit. Check accordingly! Build Your Timeline: The entire point of Twitter is to follow and be followed. So what’s the point if you’re not reading and retweeting the latest gossip from all your friends, colleagues and favorite celebs? Plus, Twitter gives you options of who to follow immediately after signing up so you need not go far.

Suggestions. Choose who to follow from the dropdown menu of notable celebs like Kanye West and Mitt Romney or news networks such as CNN and the New York Times. Twitter will also give you the option to browse a slew of categories from sports to technology.

Search. Use the search bar to find anyone the suggestions may have missed—whether they are celebrities, politicians or your just friends. You can even search for people to follow through your email accounts (Gmail, Yahoo!, AOL and Hotmail).

Add Character. Once you’re an avid follow, Twitter will ask you to upload an image (maximum size of 700k) and provide a brief, 160-character bio about yourself. The placeholder bio will introduce you as a rocket ship building, pizza tossing, Giants fan with a couple of kids. However, a bio is only suggested, not required. Tweet. You’re officially a full-fledge Twitter member with a list of friends and followers, but now it’s time to join the Tweeter ranks. Just click inside the “Compose new tweet….” box in the upper left-hand corner of the home tab or click the blue feather icon in the upper right-hand corner at any time to get started. Then punch in some text, upload an image or set your location. This is how you update your Twitter and let people know what you’re up to. Remember, text is strictly limited to 140 characters. Twitter Pointers. You’ve signed up and tweeted your first thought into the beyond, but what do you do now? Well, it’s time to learn the finer points about how to connect with your audience and join the global conversation.

Hashtags. The hashtag symbol (#) is a great way to mark specific topics or keywords in a Tweet. It was created by Twitter users as a way to classify messages and has since become a cultural phenomenom. All you have to do is place a hashtag in front of a word or phrase in your tweet. Simple as that. Can you say #tigerblood?

Mentions & Replies. Two more ways you can connect with other Twitter users. Mentions and replies are updates that contain “@username” anywhere in the body of the tweet. Place a “@” in front of the person, business, organization or whatever you want to mention or reply to. There is also a “Reply” option under tweets to save you precious time.

Retweets. A retweet is a way to share another Twitter user’s tweet with all of your followers. It will essentially look the same as normal tweets with the author’s name and username next to it, but it will also contain the retweet icon and the name of the user who reposted it. Click the “Retweet” option under a tweet in order to share.

Favorites. Adding a tweet as a favorite is similar to liking something on Facebook. It’s a way to let the original poster know you liked their tweet for whatever reason. However, it also gives you a way to save a tweet so you can refer back to it later. Simply click the star icon with “Favorite” next to it in order to favorite a tweet.

Direct Messages. You can send a direct message to people who follow you by clicking the gear icon in the top right and selecting “Direct Messages.” Choose the “New message” icon, type the name or username of the follower you wish to send the message to, enter the message and hit “Send message.” Unlike tweets, direct messages are private and can only be seen by the recipient of the message.

Mobile Version: Now you can access Twitter right from your smart phone, tablet, or other mobile device. It works in the same vein as the website, but with some slight modifications and restrictions. Plus, the smartphone versions are even equipped to create Instragramesque photos on the go and are available for both Android and Apple devices.

Random Tidbits. There are a few other things worth mentioning.

Try using your real information (name, location, etc.) when customizing your Twitter homepage and profile. Doing so will help people find you more easily on Twitter.

Change your personal options by clicking the gear icon and choosing the “Settings” option. Here you can change around your personal options, picture, bio, password, or any other sort of customization you’ve done. You can also make all your tweets private by checking the “Protect my Tweets” option in the settings menu. If selected, only those you approve will receive your tweets.

You can change your Twitter username anytime without affecting your existing tweets, replies, direct messages or other data. But be sure to let your followers know so you’ll continue receiving all of your messages with your new username.

Learn to use shorthand — it’s tough to get a thought out in 140 characters or less — but remember you’re not texting. Don’t make yourself look completely illiterate.

Follow and tweet to amass your fanbase. Go the whole nine yards and use in hashtags, mentions, replies, and favorite tweets. If you follow someone, they will be more inclined to follow you back. Just don’t spam.

Integrate other social networks into the mix. Have a Facebook account? You can link it directly to Twitter so your tweets automatically post on your Facebook timeline. Just log in with your Facebook information from the profile tab in the Twitter settings menu.

Tweet Away. That’s basically all you need to know about Twitter in a nutshell. Go ahead and share your deepest secrets with your followers, rejoice when you’re favorite musician replies to you, or engage in an infamous tweet argument. You still get the same iconic aluminum design, bright and crisp display and the best keyboard/trackpad combination we’ve ever seen in an ultraportable. All for $100 less than the previous Air.

Best Budget Notebook: Toshiba Satellite P845-S4200 ($599)

This Best Buy exclusive has some of the best audio we’ve heard in a 14-inch notebook. The Harmon/Kardon speakers above the keyboard were not only powerful, but accurate. This notebook also sports an attractive and durable aluminum body, a fast third-generation Intel Core i5 processor, a fairly large 750GB hard drive and 6GB of RAM. That’s a pretty awesome deal in our book.

Best Ultrabook: ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A ($1,099)

With a bright 1080p IPS display and loud Bang & Olufsen speakers, this 3-pound ultraportable out-Airs the Air in some respects. We love the circular aluminum swirl on the cover and brushed finish on the inside. Better yet is the much improved (and backlit) keyboard and spacious touchpad. About the only thing we didn’t like was this notebook’s relatively slow SSD, but when you add in 6.5 hours of juice, the UX31A is the best Ultrabook yet.

Best Windows 8 Hybrid: Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga ($999)

Automatic Turn Off Windows 8

Introduction In this article we will explain the process to schedule the automatic shutdown of the operating system Windows 8. Automatic shutdown is one of the feature of Windows operating system which make your computer secure. But sometimes when you work on your computer late at night it is really hard to remember to shut it off your computer; in those cases you should use the automatic shutdown scheduler in your computer. How To Automatically Shut Down Your Windows 7 Computer

Well, here we go again.  In addition to my How To Automatically Shut Down Your Windows XP Computer I showed how to set it up so you can use the ShutDown.exe command to schedule and automatically shut your Windows XP computer off. In my How To Automatically Shut Down Your Windows Vista Computer we stepped through the same idea.  And now, here’s Windows 7.  Guess what?  Not too different.  So let’s get going. For this How To, I’m using Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC).  Hopefully not too many changes between now and the final version of Windiows 7  changes in regards to running a scheduled task.  Below is the first screen shot after I clicked on the Start button and Control Panel.  You’ll find the Scheduled Tasks under System and Security. Click on System and Security and you should see the Administrative Tool selections at the bottom of the control panel window.  Click on Schedule Tasks and you’ll be presented with the screen below.

The Task Scheduler is pretty much the same in Windows 7 as Windows Vista.  The Task Scheduler can look intimidating but it’s not too bad. Just move forward. We are going to look at one task and not all the extra stuff in Task Scheduler.

In the Actions column on the right, click Create Basic Task…

You’ll see the following window and I’ve already filled in the Name and Description of our task.

After clicking Next you’ll see the Task Trigger screen. We want to shut down our Windows 7 computer in the middle of the night, every night so we’ll pick Daily.

Double-click the Task Name if you need to work with the settings.

Here’s the screen when the task fires off and starts to automatically shut down Windows 7. A window pops up telling us that Windows will shut down in less than a minute. You can click on the Close button but that will just close that window and Windows itself will continue to shut down.

There’s quite a bit of detail with the shutdown.exe command and here is the output when you run the shutdown.exe /? command at the command prompt in Windows 7. It lists the choices of how you want to run the shutdown.exe command.

There you have it. Now you can automatically shutdown your Windows 7 computer.

Posting your blog posts to Facebook automatically

There are several applications you can use to feed blog posts to Facebook.  Each one displays the posts on your page’s wall, so that everyone that ‘likes’ your page will also see your posts in their newsfeed.  Some tools provide the option to create a separate ‘Blog’ tab on your page and some allow people to subscribe to your blog and give you user statistics.

Why should I add my blog posts to Facebook?

Increase your readership. Facebook will increase the number of people who see your blog posts.

Maximise your effort. Automating the process saves you time.

Adds more content to your Facebook Fan Page.

Before You Begin

Some considerations before setting up:

Will you be sending too much content to your Facebook page? Having too much automated content can look lazy and might cause people to ‘unlike’ your page if you crop up too much in their newsfeed. If you publish blog posts frequently (3 times a day or more) then think about this next point.

What kinds of blog posts do you want to appear on Facebook? It can sometimes make your page look less appealing if all the information on your wall has come from one place. Instead, you could choose to tag certain blog posts with a ‘Facebook’ tag and just send the feed for that tag to your Facebook page. You could use this alongside Facebook’s link, video and event sharing features so not all content comes from your blog.

How much of your blog posts do you want to show on Facebook? If you want to direct readers away from Facebook to your actual blog then you don’t really want them to be able to view complete posts within Facebook; perhaps just a title and a snippet of text.

Applications for Adding Your Blog Posts to Facebook

1) Facebook Notes Facebook’s in-house blogging application. Works reliably with no branding/marketing but does display the posts in their entirety. Generates an RSS feed which people can subscribe to outside of Facebook. No stats on subscribers but interactions with Notes within Facebook is reported via Facebook Insights. Probably the biggest downside is that you can only import one RSS feed into Facebook notes.

Log in as your page (Account > Use Facebook as page)

Go to www.facebook.com/notes.php

Click ‘Edit import settings’

Type in full URL of blog RSS feed

2) Networked Blogs One of the applications we currently use on the LSE Careers Facebook page.  Getting it set up is a fairly complex process but once this is done it seems to work really well. Allows people to subscribe both within Facebook and externally and provides stats on subscribers. Creates a ‘Blog’ tab on your page but doesn’t display full posts – all links take users to your blog itself.  Option to post blog to Twitter too. Facebook posts contain some branding. Whilst all of these applications display one image included in your blog post, Networked Blogs can display a small screenshot of your blog with any posts that don’t contain images which can ensure your blog posts always look a bit more appealing and eye-catching.

3) RSS Graffiti Similar to Networked Blogs in that you can feed more than one blog (or other RSS sources such as social bookmark feeds) to your wall with some branding and just a snippet of each post. However there’s no option for users to subscribe directly and getting set up is fairly complicated. The ‘Wallpaper’ tab it creates is a nice idea and can be used as an effective Welcome page or landing tab. It groups and displays your statuses, shared links, featured blog posts and friends’ updates, but it can be glitchy and isn’t particularly well designed.

4) Social RSS Similar to Networked Blogs and RSS Graffiti but benefiting from a quicker and easier set up and subscription options. However, posts are very long and contain lots of unnecessary ‘meta-data’ (publish date, source of feed etc.) and promotion of Social RSS’s other services. There can sometimes be a significant delay between posting on your blog and the post appearing on Facebook. However this app is stable enough to be a good beginner’s option.

5) Involver The third party application developer Involver make a wide range of free Facebook applications including an RSS app which you can use to feed your blog to Facebook, a Twitter app which displays your Twitterfeed in a separate tab, a Flickr app, document viewer which lets you display PDFs, Word Docs and spreadsheets on Facebook and Youtube app. Well worth checking out.
