Late... again
ACE 05 is so late again this morning that it’s almost running on the ACE 07 schedule.
Bad way to start the year
First day of the year, ACE 05 is running 27 minutes late, enough that ACE 07 is stuck behind us.
I can’t wait to move away so I don’t have to deal with ACE any more. This is frustrating and embarrassing.
Service quality taking a dive
Last week, I rode ACE on 3 days.
On Monday, because of a sports event, I had to leave work 15 minutes early in the afternoon
On Tuesday, I left home 25 minutes early in the morning in order to be able to park.
On Tuesday evening, a mechanical issue causes the train to be 15 minutes late.
On Wednesday, I had to take ACE 6 in the evening instead of my usual ACE 4, and ACE 6 was standing-room-only.
This week starts just as bad, ACE 5 is stopped in Fremont and I'm in ACE 7 that is stuck right behind it.
Within a span of a few years, ACE has taken a nosedive in quality of service, and the current plans to extend service further without adding trains will only make things worse.
Inaccurate schedules
Over the last few years, ACE has been late for me much more than it has been on time. Specifically, it’s routinely 3 to 5 minutes late in Tracy in the evening.
Yesterday was November 12, a federal holiday, so ridership was lower.
The morning train yesterday was about 3 minutes late in Tracy, and yet it was on time at Great America. The evening train was on time all along, instead of accumulating delays station after station.
I suspect that the issue is that increased ridership causes trains to stay longer in the stations, and as a resut they can’t stick with the schedule that was planned when ridership was lower.
Victim of its own success
In many ways, ACE has been a routine part of my life for now more than 3 years.
There are, in a way, 2 levels of routine:
-When ACE runs properly, it is mostly on time in the mornings, and it typically gets 5 minutes late in the evenings. I still haven't figured out why there's a difference between mornings and evenings. And then there are events at Levi's Stadium that close the entire neighborhood of the train station and retire to leave work earlier than usual in order to catch the train.
-When ACE fails, which it continues to do more or less monthly, it fails catastrophically. Not long ago, a train hit a pickup truck on the tracks, and the rest of morning service was cancelled, my train terminated at Livermore, from where I ended up going to San Francisco instead of Silicon Valley. Last month, an early morning train failed, which rippled down through the whole morning commute, such that even the last morning train was late, 5 hours later. Luckily, VTA did a great job at waiting for the trains.
However, there's a second part of ACE for which the routine has changed: ACE is victim of its own success. Parking lots fill up in the morning, such that for me taking the last train in the morning becomes a gamble on Tuesdays through Thursdays. Some evening trains now run as standing room only, which also makes for an unpleasant commute. Overall, the success of ACE is lowering my quality of life.
Finally, with no midday, late evening, or weekend service, the usefulness of ACE is practically limited to commuting. In 3 years, I have never taken ACE for anything other than commuting. ACE only does one thing, it's never done it well in the last 3 years, and it's steadily worsening.
This is Linne Rd at Tracy Blvd, seen from the platform of the Tracy ACE station. There's emergency roadwork on I-580W, and the traffic is jammed from Livermore all the way to here... Today is a great day to ride ACE, and lots of people seem to agree as the platform is more packed than usual.
“A freight train is having mechanical problems on the Altamont Pass. This just happened. No ETA on how long the delay may be.”
Well,I guess I’m lucky I’m not riding today. This happened at 7am, right in time to block ACE 05 and ACE 07.
Edit: Train is on the move at 7:15am, this might end up being OK.
Because of a game at Levi’s Stadium, the public shuttles ran early today… but because I had been on vacation, I literally didn’t get the memo, and I missed my shuttle.
All right, no big deal, I’ll take light rail and catch the next train. Because of the holidays, there are very few people in the train anyway, so it’s no big deal to take ACE 06 that is usually crowded. I even used the opportunity to play done good Ingress along the way.
Where things get funny is that ACE 06 down show up at Great America. In fact, 12 minutes beyond schedule, we see a train of empty well cars rush past is in the other direction (pictured).
No communication from the station signage, the ACE web site is all confused, and the GPS tracker has been showing the train supposedly on time, 10 minutes away, and not moving.
Luckily, I’m not in a rush, I have smartphones to keep me busy (with an extended external battery), and I somehow decided to wear my passed leather jacket today, along with good gloves and a thick scarf, so I’m all good after all.
In the end, we're 25 minutes late. I'm guessing we were waiting for the freight train in question. It blows my mind that in 2016 we still can't build double tracks.
Expect major delay to ACE 4 due to train/person incident, on the way to San Jose station. Will advise more info as available.
ACE, 9/20/16
Grass Fire???!?!!!
Woah there. After a rough morning on 5/31/16, ACE now has 2 trains held (and had another one delayed) because of a grass fire. For the unlucky riders who were on ACE 1 this morning and ACE 6 this afternoon, that's a total delay of 4 hours. I know it's just bad luck. I know it's just bad luck. But this is a bad start for summer.
Mechanical issues?!?
This morning 5/31/16, ACE 1 broke down before Tracy, and it had to wait for ACE 3 for a tow. Result: 2h30 of delay for ACE 1, 1h15 for ACE 3 (which is enough for ACE 5 to catch up with it, such that ACE 5 itself is now running late). Luckily for me, I’m in ACE 7 as usual, such that I’m unaffected as I don’t think that ACE 7 will catch up with that mess (though it’ll be close by the time everyone reaches San Jose).
With train infrastructure and service being minimalistic, this isn’t entirely surprising, unfortunately. ACE trains run with a single diesel engine, which means that there’s no backup when the engine fails. There’s not enough station infrastructure to easily tow a dead train there, transfer passengers to a good train, and remove the dead train from service. Heck, with double tracks at least it’d be possible for good trains to pass the dead train so that delays don’t propagate that much through the system. Finally, I don’t quite want to think about what would happen if the last train broke down (ACE 7 or ACE 10).
On top of the trains being so late, I expect that VTA’s shuttle will be overwhelmed by having essentially 3 trains arriving at the same time.
Today I’m lucky that I’m not in the affected train, but that’s why I always carry things with me to keep myself busy. I should seriously look into having food and water as well.
All smooth
Recently, ACE has been running Mostly smoothly.
The morning trains seem to run sharply on schedule, while the afternoon trains somehow still manage to pick up a few minutes of delay between Silicon Valley and San Joaquin Valley, even though they’re all scheduled for the same 1h22m between GAC and TRC.
My company has been tweaking the schedule of the private shuttles, and specifically added a shuttle for ACE 07. To me, that’s the most important one, since that’s the only one when VTA shuttles aren’t synchronized with the train. The resulting trip for me is about 1h50 door-to-door, which perfect.
Reliable VTA shuttles
As part of the ACE system, VTA does an outstanding job running shuttles from Great America throughout Silicon Valley.
Having spent a bit of time at Google instead of my usual office, I got to take the orange shuttle. Whereas the rest of VTA’s system is pathetic around Google, those shuttles work well.
There’s a huge irony that it’s easier to take public transit to Google from Stockton than from San Francisco or Oakland. Even getting from San Jose to Google is a mess on VTA unless you’re willing to walk the last 4 miles.
Derailed
ACE 10 derailed in Niles Canyon tonight 3/7, carrying 214 people. 14 injured, 4 seriously. Service is cancelled tomorrow 3/8.
I guess I’ll drive.
That’s the way ACE is supposed to be: on time. That’s actually what happens most of the time. Yay!
Answering my own earlier question: ACE 5 and 7 are running, most probably empty, such that there'll be all 4 trainsets in San Jose for the evening runs. I suspect that the evening trains will all feel quite empty.
This about ties for the biggest delay I've seen on ACE in 6 months. Trains 5 and 7 actually turned around back to Stockton, after (I guess) letting passengers transfer to train 3. I have no idea what that'll mean for tonight's trains.
