When I found you, I found me.
I have not yet seen the last episode of series 4, but I have been following many of your comments, and am aware of the thalidomide story. Many CtM fans seem to think that this will come back to haunt Dr Turner and Shelagh, but I’m not sure. I don’t think…
(Responding particularly to snoopmk, but I screwed up the reblog - will get it right eventually) Agree with what is being said here (what you all have posted, not with what I have said, which would be redundant and self-serving). The thalidomide story most definitely must not be just a footnote, and I find the idea of it affecting Shelagh more than Patrick to be intriguing. Their marriage is portrayed so beautifully, and I can see this as drawing them closer. Call the Midwife is drama, not melodrama, and I do trust the writers to tell the story of the effects of this drug, not use it as a plot device against which our favorite characters react.
One factor which I haven't seen mentioned (and which I think might have been referenced for a specific reason) is that the father of the potential thalidomide baby is in prison. If he gets out and learns that his baby's deformities are due to a prescribed drug might he 'go after' the Turners? (God forbid he threatens Angela in a misguided attempt at revenge). I'm not convinced there won't be some melodrama attached to this plot line but I would like to see it tied in with some larger themes, such as Patrick questioning his almost-proselytising faith in modern medicine and Shelagh becoming involved in campaigning on behalf of the affected children and their parents.

So true! Especially the one where you don’t hear someone for the third time, and just laugh *guilty*
The Cast of Call the Midwife - complete frickin’ dorks.
Imagine if S2 had ended with a car accident...
I remember people were genuinely afraid that Patrick might run over Sister Bernadette/Shelagh on the misty road in S2E8. Imagine how all of us Turnadette shippers would have felt if their love story had been blighted by a serious accident and amnesia before it had even properly begun??
TBH I wasn’t aware of a trope or a recognised trend in TV lesbian relationships being ended by tragedy (possibly neither was HTMG) but now it's out there I can understand why Patsy/Delia shippers might be even more upset than normal about the fate that befell them.
I hope the S4 finale won't lead to a split in the CTM fandom. We all have our own favourite characters for our own personal reasons. No need to wish death on TPTB if we dislike their plot lines(!), but at least try and accept that others have a right to be upset...
Thinking about the mention of thalidomide in the last episode of Call the Midwife and the potential consequences/storylines for Series 5….
We’ve never seen Shelagh/Sister Bernadette make any missteps in her as a nurse and midwife. She’s had some growing pains and...
Excellent point about showcasing Laura's acting talent. S3 didn't really give her sufficient screen time IMHO, even when dealing with life-changing events. She did so much with so little in S1 & (esp) S2 that I hope we get to see her be given more focus as a character in her own right in S5. It's rare to see an actress convey so much emotion with so little facial expression as she did when she was playing Sister Bernadette.
CTM Series 4 finale
Have only just caught up via iPlayer (and a little bit of a scroll through tumblr).
First thoughts:
* The whole 'Delia nearly killed / doesn't recognise Patsy' seemed a heck of a cop out as I was watching it. I would have been much more interested in seeing if they could make their arrangement work and whether there might be growing recognition / acceptance (or even opposition) towards the actual situation from the nurses and nuns. Maybe that could still happen if Delia recovers...?
* The thalidomide birth and subsequent fallout is going to be gut-wrenching to watch but I could have done without Shelagh and Patrick grinning at each other in a goofily self-congratulatory manner when the 'cured' mother-to-be left. Granted they didn't have much to do in this episode but that scene was heavy-handed (and a bit twee tbh).
* Sending hate mail and death threats to HTMG because you don't like a plot point: WTF???? if true. SO NOT COOL. Get a grip you effing nutters!
I don’t know about you….but this scene made me laugh so much + why are left handed people so hot? hahah
It tickles me that they're BOTH left-handed- quite unusual I suspect!
On a side note, why the heck is Patrick:
(a) starting his meal before everyone else is seated at the table ready to eat?
(b) tucking into his meal using only his fork?
This is ENGLAND in 1960. We didn't lose our table manners until at least the late 1970's! ;-)
Being Left
"That way, no one will ever lose their mothers."
The sharp smell of smoke still clings to her hair, Timothy notes as he buries his face into her shoulder. He had heard the door open and close, finally, and had rushed into the front hall as Dad looked up from where he was tinkering in the kitchen.
