Intentions

At the Buddhist temple, nails are tacked onto panels of wood and, on them, plaques of prayers are hung by a string. They are displayed to the gods, that they may look upon the intentions favorably and grant the requests.

Most prayers made are about love. Love to find. Love to work. Love to last forever.

I almost prayed about ours. But we’ve already found each other, I know we’ll always make it work, and I’m certain ours will last forever.

So amidst the heart-shaped prayers of love, I chose a different one for you. I prayed for your health, your career, your happiness, your becoming.

And I prayed that you allow me to be there to witness God granting my request everyday.

At sunrise, we cross the sea hand in hand on an unsteady and unsafe path of misaligned platforms of rock and when we're miles from our port of origin, I still don't see our final destination, so I tug at your hand and tell you

"I'm tired"

You smile patiently at me and say

"It'll be worth it"

So we trudge on and soon the sun is high overhead heating the path we walk on, so I tug at your hand and tell you

"My feet hurt"

You turn to me and bend over a little and I climb on to your back and you keep walking

The night catches up to us and the tide has come in and you're wading in waters chest high as I'm hanging on to you and I tell you

"I'm scared we won't make it"

You look at me with eyes so full of conviction that I have no choice but to believe you and say

"We will"

And I know we will.
