New Embroidery Pattern Launch: The Delftware Dodo
A hand embroidery pattern for an adorable Dodo decorated in Delftware-style flowers. Dutch delft pottery has inspired the whole piece. ***N
It's that time again!
I'm gradually (and that is, VERY gradually) trying to make more embroidery patterns to share with you all, and this time we're paying our respects to perhaps the most iconic extinct animal outside of the dinosaurs - the dodo.
I went to Amsterdam for the very first time recently and, as per tradition, stuck my head in one of the local gift shops for a souvenir to take home. Who should I see but this adorable little guy looking back at me?
Made from Delftware - a Netherlands pottery style that utilises blues and whites - the Delftware Dodo acts as a sort of apology from the Dutch to the poor belaboured bird, as it was 17thc Dutch traders who majorly contributed to it’s over-hunting and extinction. Now it represents creativity and a relationship with the past.
The artist who created it is Pepijn van den Nieuwendijk and you can find his Etsy here:

With this pattern I wanted to embrace how much fun I've had in experimenting with felt, so used that as the base to then embroider on top of, giving a nice clean (and satisfyingly fuzzy) foundation that really makes the florals pop. If you pick him up to give it a go I'd love to see what you make of him! Tag me on Instagram @pixelmagpie
You can find the pattern for sale in my shop now :D Kofi: https://ko-fi.com/s/c5d6b162ab
