As a teenager in St. Albans School, Hugh joined the “Army Cadets” marching band, initially as a bugler. He found himself at the rear with the other horn players during school marching processions. Realizing that “the drummers were at the front and they didn’t have to do all of that blowing,” Grundy gained approval to switch to drumming, which was taught there in the highly disciplined and structured miliary style …”I realized I truly enjoyed drumming, and I had a natural aptitude for it.”

We were going to split up in 1964 but a contest came up at Watford town hall. When we won we thought we’d try it for a year. We didn’t think of it as a full-time career. With She’s Not There we were in the right place at the right time with the right song. It went to number one in the [US] Cashbox charts. We kind of took it for granted because we were so young and naive
