Carlos looked to where she was and saw the ornaments in question. âOh those, are cute,â Carlos admitted. âDad would have adored them.â If only discretion wasnât a necessity. Carlos was tempted to get just one or two so his family members could keep them in their own rooms out of the sight of guests.
He looked at the woman again and smiled. âThank you for the warning. Itâs surprisingly difficult to find ornaments that my family can enjoy, but No-Majes wonât really notice too much.â
âThe same goes for my sister,â Tina said, knowing that Queenie would have loved those singing ornaments. However, Mrs. Esposito would definitely not be a big fan of them. Having to hide the wizarding community had made it difficult to make enchanted ornaments, as they had to be as close to the No-Maj ones as possible.
âThatâs true,â she agreed with a nod. âTwo years ago we bought some color-changing ones,â she told him. âThey only changed their color once in a day, so it wasnât really noticeable. I donât know if those ones still exist.â
newts-travels-fastÂ
âIâd say it takes a couple of hours, maybe less, but their development can take weeks to months,â Newt frowned, recalling the one he had pulled out of Kamaâs eye, slender, but long enough to screw itself completely around his wrist, âI daresay Kama had a four month old parasite. Maybe older,â he pointed out.
He nodded slightly as she talked. Never been better⌠At each word, his hopes of having her again got lower. âUm, yes. Turns out they liked my book enough to get it publishedâŚâ he said sheepishly. He had dreamt for so long about possibilities that could have gone wrong, preparing himself to hear a polite unfortunately not, but it didnât happened. In fact, it turned out better than he would ever imagine. âIâm so happy it went right,â he added. His fingers went discretly to his pockets, searching for a package. Maybe that would be a good time to apologize. âI⌠I still have your copy. Terribly sorry I couldnât make it back to New YorkâŚâ he said quietly, glancing the ground.
Tina swallowed hard as the thought of having a long worm-like parasite living in her body for months ran through her mind. She quickly shook her head to try to get rid of that idea. âWell, he seemed to be living in the canal system for a few months,â she said, or at least that was what she could deduce of what she had seen at Kamaâs place.
âThatâs great,â Tina said politely, when Newt told her about his book. She didnât want to tell him how glad she was when she read about the reception of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in the newspapers and magazines. This was before he got engaged to Leta Lestrange and before he told her his opinion on aurors. This was when she had hope and the memory of it still hurt her. However, despite the anger and sadness she felt about Newt since then, her heart swell, when he handed her a copy of his book. âWow, thank you,â she said, with a genuine smile, but then she quickly glanced away, trying to hide that small wave of emotions washing over her.
was-wicked
âIt is part of the Lestrange males belief.â Leta took a step back at the flower comment, using it as a segue way into explaining the truth of her family linage. âYou see the Lestrange name, while one of the few pure blood lines to remain such has a very⌠tinted reputation.â She shrugged, wiping away some of the tears so she could face the auror, âThe Lestrangeâs tend to think themselves up as royalty. Superior. The reputation of said family is⌠Not such.â She shook her head, hoping deep down Tina didnât think Leta think of herself that way, taking a moment to sigh. âMost people think us insane. Monsters. And I have to agree.â
At the stressing of Credenceâs case Leta, for a second time sighed, blinking twice before beginning her explanation. âThere was a young boy sworn revenge on my father after he stole the boyâs father, my mother, whom died in childbirth with me.â Leta stopped, taking one more moment for herself, one more selfish moment to be clean. She knew she wasnât pure. She knew she wasnât a monster, but for some reason she didnât want this stranger to know.
The case of her mother, after all, had troubled her more than Leta had yet to admit. Her past was something she was not used to talking about, not even with her fiancĂŠ. It was⌠Strange. It made her tired as though sheâd been running from something for so long, talking about it almost left her panting, breathless.
âWe were supposed to go to America to flee this mans rage. Corvus was supposed to go to the Bareboneâs and I was to stay with Irma, a servant of my fathers, until I was old enough to attend Hogwarts bu-â
âI promiseâ⌠Her words sounded genuine. True. And The auror promised, it was the only thing a stranger could say to ⌠But why wasnât this enough for her? Why didnât she believe her? And why did she want to fall to her knees and cry.
âBut Corvus- But I- The ship-â She tried again, sighing as once more an invisible filter stopped her. Why couldnât she say it. Tears of frustration welled up in her eyes and she clenched her fists, digging her nails into her palms slightly in complete frustration she tried to get her head to a neutral state.
âI am sorry Miss Goldstein.â Leta apologized as she attempted to collect herself, but she wouldnât turn to the auror. âI promise I will answer your questions just⌠Just give me a moment.â
While listening to Leta talking about her family, Tina realized that she was not a big fan of the Lestrange family after all. In America, there were a few strange families as well, but none of them was like this one. Or at least the families Tina knew of.
She nodded, when the other woman told her about her mother, as she had heard this part from Yusuf Kama, whose mother had been the woman who died at childbirth. âIâm sorry for that,â she said, as it must have been hard for anyone who lost her mother during childbirth.
Yusufâs story ended with Leta and the baby Corvus escaping to America, and when Leta got to this part, Tina instinctively took a step forward, due to curiosity.
However, the other woman could not continue it. She tried it several times, but she just couldnât seem to go on with it. Whatever had happened, it must have been a really heavy burden on Letaâs soul. And probably she hadnât told this to anyone before, which probably made the burden bigger.
The auror could see the tears in Letaâs eyes, and she felt a wave of guilt for asking her to tell her such painful things, but for the sake of Credence, she had to do it. âItâs okay,â she said, carefully placing a hand on the other womanâs shoulder. âTake your time,â she added with a small, encouraging smile, even though she was aware that this topic would be nothing to smile about.
âWh-why?â
Why does she want to help him? If they were people who knew what happened in New York, knew what heâd done, why didnât she want to hunt him down as well? She was aware of what heâd done, of his sins, of the monster he truly was, and yet instead she had come to warn him.
âIâŚI have things I need to do,â he mumbles, hand shifting to where the adoption certificate stays in place in his pocket. Heâs almost found her, the name on his adoption certificate. His mother? He canât be sure, but either way itâs a lead, and he has to follow it, has to find out who he really is.
Credence isnât the first one who has asked Tina this question: âWhy do you want to help him?â And she has told the answer so many times that she doesnât have to think about it at all. âBecause it was not your fault,â she says. He didnât develop that obscurus on purpose, she was sure about it.Â
âWhat things, if I may ask?â she wonders, trying to find out how can she stay with him for more. She wants to know what has happened to him and what he is doing in Paris. However, the streets arenât the best place for that.
OOC: Iâm thinking of making a How to Train Your Dragon AU, although Iâm not quite sure how shall I place Tina on the Isle of Berk. Perhaps she could be a shipwreck or something like that.
Wouldy anyone be interestin in such thing, tough?

Leta wasnât sure about this. She didnât know Tina all too well for one, and second for wasnât sure if this was still the proper address. All that Leta knew it times were hard, all too hard, and if she could make one or maybe two people happy then it was worth the risk.
âTina,
Iâm sure that the holidays have been busy, and I know that Iâm a little late for Hanukkah and I hope you forgive me. Nor do I know if this is something you will enjoy⌠But please consider it. And donât worry about getting back to me with a rejection or acceptance and donât even think about giving me any sort of payment in return. And please, more than anything, be happy Tina. Take care.
Hope to see you soon
L. Lestrange.â
Merlin let this be okay. Leta thought with a shake of her head, before sealing and handing the letter to her owl, watching the owl fly off into the sky before moving to help Theseus with dinner trying to brush away her nerves.
Tina was curiously eyeing the foreigh owl as she wasnât expecting any letters right now. She picked up her wand and gently pointed at the envelope. This probably wouldnât be necessary, but she felt more safe that way. âRevelio,â she said, but the letter had nothing to show. The owl, however got frightened by Tina pointing the wand at them and flew away, leaving the letter on the table.
The handwriting wasnât familiar, the auror stated as she opened the letter, so the first thing she checked was the signature at the bottom. Seeing Leta Lestrangeâs name drew a smile on her face. Although she felt a little ashamed for checking the letter before opening it.
It was an invitation to London, including a ticket there as well. Tina wasnât expecting such a gift, and although she thought it might have been a bit too much, it warmed her heart. She hadnât seen Leta since they left Hogwarts after the events in Paris and it would be good meeting her again. And to visit Newt as well. She sat down to her desk and began to write the answer:
Dear Leta,
Thank you for the invitation and for the ticket! I would love to visit you as we havenât seen each other for quite awhile. How have you been? I hope that the holidays are going well for you. I wish you all the best and take care.
Best Regards, Tina Goldstein
Also, she added in thoughts as she folded the paper, this way I can give you your present in person. She bought her the seeds of a small tree, which, according to MACUSAâs herbologists, could grow well in the British soil as well. This way Leta and Theseus could start their own family tree, she thought, no matter how cheesy that was.

Carlos gave a soft, amused huff. âNo, thatâs quite alright,â he said. âIâd imagine itâd be difficult to tie it all together with only four.â He looked at ornaments. âI suppose Iâm looking for something a bit tamer, anyhow - enchantment-wise, I mean.â
She seemed like a nice girl â not a standard Christmas shopper with only one self-serving goal in mind. Something about stores just turned peopleâs brains inside-out, it seemed.
âOf course, these wonât be the only ornaments on the tree,â Tina said, still surprised a little that the young man had given up on the ornaments as Christmas shopping could make people crazy. Two years ago she and Queenie witnessed a duel over a pair of gloves in the middle of the store. Luckily, this guy was far from that.
âIn that case, donât try the singing ones over there,â she said, gesturing towards the other end of the shelf, where a set of baubles were singing Silent Night to two little children.
