Bryn Mawr everywhere

I graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1992.  I received the alumnae bulletin today and while perusing, I came upon the Anassa chant.  The memory tickled me - I forget lots of things these days, but I never forgot the chant!  I love Bryn Mawr's traditions.  Funny, I always knew how to say the chant, but I never saw it spelled out or translated until today.  I learn something new every day.

My time at Bryn Mawr seems so long ago.   My son is looking at colleges, and my daughter will follow course in 2 years. I am a proud Mawrter but honestly, I do not meet a lot of Mawrters.    

But I do find Bryn Mawr referenced in the funniest of places.  I was a big fan of the Monkees when I was just a wee child, under the age of 10.  I regress from time to time and watch their old episodes on Youtube.  Much to my surprise, just two weeks ago, I found a Bryn Mawr reference in a Monkees episode!!  Imagine that - years before I knew Bryn Mawr existed, the Monkees had dropped my Alma Mater's name on an episode.

I was so proud, I posted the episode on my Facebook page.  I will also post it here to share with other Mawrters.  Listen carefully because it goes fast -  Bryn Mawr is mentioned at 7:33.  😊 It would have only been better if the Anassa chant had also been worked into the episode.

Hell Week is now Welcome the First Years (WTF) Week

“Students today announced the name of Bryn Mawr’s updated Hell Week tradition, “Welcome the First Years” or "WTF" week. The new name was revealed at an afternoon gathering of students on campus.

Equal parts irreverent and affirming, the tradition will be a week of fun and bonding between the first year and upper class students. Students are continuing to develop the tradition and will share details after the end of the fall semester.”

As a part of yesterday’s Convocation event, President Cassidy announced the opening of The Enid Cook ’31 Center, a newly renovated residential space that will also serve as the Black Cultural Center. A Short List of Hell Week Dos and Don'ts

Do: Have fun!

Don’t: Do any Hell Week task you are uncomfortable with.

Do: Tell your Hellers and Customs People if there are things you can’t handle or find stressful. Especially tell your Hellers if you are uncomfortable with secrets or surprise parties, as these are part of the tradition in some Hell families.

Don’t: Feel that you have to do everything on your schedule; there won’t be time.

Do: Do anything wacky you want to do but are afraid people would judge you for; Hell Week is a time to do anything that isn’t bigoted, illegal, or unsafe.

Don’t: Forget about Hell Free spaces: These are spaces where Hell tasks are prohibited (except for costumes). Anywhere off-campus is automatically Hell-Free. This includes Haverford.

Do: Follow posting policy. Chalk only in places that rain can wash it away, and only on horizontal surfaces. Also, put your email on posters, and don’t chalk on cobblestones — it’s bad for the mortar.

Don’t: Feel obliged to drink alcohol; also don’t shame people who do.

Do: Feel free to avoid people who are being obnoxious. Erdman and Goodhart Performances are especially crowded.

Don’t: Exhaust yourself. You need to stay healthy!

Do: Show up for the end of warm-ups: Important scheduling information will be given out then. If you can’t, ask a friend to tell you all about it. You will need to know this.

Don’t: forget about your homework. School is still going on.

Do: Be aware that some tasks are traditional to put on schedules, but never do. They are often set in Hell-Free spaces, like off-campus, or Plenary.

Don’t: Use Hell Week as an excuse to be bigoted, rude, or unsafe. Be careful, be courteous.

Do: Come to Plenary!

Bryn Mawr will accept applications from transgender women

Bryn Mawr College, an all-female college, announced Monday that it will soon accept applications from transgender women and from people who don’t identify as men.In a press release, the school said it would consider the applications of “transwomen and of intersex individuals who live and identify as women at the time of application.” Bryn Mawr will also allow “intersex individuals who do not identify as male” to apply to the college, but those who were assigned female at birth and have taken “medical or legal steps to identify as male” won’t be eligible for admission to the school. The announcement comes after a Change.org petition last year asked the school to accept transgender women.

BLACK LIVES MATTER: DIE-IN, MARCH, & VIGIL

Please join the students of the Tri-College (Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore Colleges), Villanova, Harcum, Rosemont, etc., and the Lower Merion community in a Main Line Die-In, March, and Vigil.  In this country, a Black person is killed every 28 hours by those who are supposed to protect the people – the police. The recent grand jury decisions in Ferguson and New York City have sparked protests throughout the country. The people participating in these protests are hurt, angry, and calling for action and justice. These protests have largely been limited to cities, but issues of police brutality and discrimination extend far beyond our largest cities, existing in the suburbs as well. This demonstration pushes the Main Line to recognize, and feel these injustices and the outrage that has followed. The organizers, students at Bryn Mawr College, extend the invitation to the entire Lower Merion community, and beyond.  “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” – Desmond Tutu  It’s time to end the silence.  THIS IS A 3 PART DEMONSTRATION: 1.DIE-IN We ask that everyone arrive at Bryn Mawr College’s Pembroke Arch (located on N. Merion Rd.) beginning at 4:30 p.m., and prepare to walk into the town of Bryn Mawr at 4:50. Once we arrive at the Lancaster Ave. & Elliott Ave. intersection (in front of Starbucks), we will drop to the ground. The die-in will last for 4.5 minutes to represent the 4 and a half hours Michael Brown’s body was left lifeless on the ground. During this moment, we ask that non-Black POC and white allies SIT in solidarity during this time but not lay down as the dead. 2. MARCH  We will then march down Lancaster Ave. to Haverford College. When we arrive at Haverford, we will hold a 4.5-minute moment of silence. We will then loop back onto Montgomery Avenue and march back to Bryn Mawr College.  3. VIGIL  We will gather at Bryn Mawr College (in front of Merion Green) for a candlelight vigil. Here is a timeline of the events: 5:00 - Depart from Pembroke Arch (N. Merion Avenue), march to the intersection of Elliot Avenue & Lancaster Avenue 5:10 - Die-In at the intersection of Elliot Avenue & Lancaster Avenue (will last for 4.5 minutes) 5:20 - March down Lancaster to/through Haverford’s campus 5:50 - Arrive at Founders Hall for 4.5 minutes of silence 6:00 - Depart from Haverford, cross over to Montgomery Avenue from Haverford Station Rd. (where the train station is) and march to Bryn Mawr on Montgomery Avenue 6:30 - Arrive at Bryn Mawr’s campus to gather on Merion Green for a candlelight vigil. 7:00 - The vigil and event will conclude.

2. Your computer and/or smart phone You got to be able to keep up on your tumblr dash. Plus you can use the Internet to encourage people to join you at Plenary.

3. A pillow You know, in case you need a nap.

4. Head phones and/or ear plugs Because no one actually wants to listen to Robert’s Rules of Order. That’s too much Hell even for Hell Week.
