Assignment #2 Winner - Option 1

“Livin’ On A Prayer”

Assignment #2: Option 1

They’re all a bunch of lonely, lost kids at first. Of this, Austin is sure.

Their group starts out with two brothers, one who can’t face his past and the other who blames himself for a death he had nothing to do with, had no part in; but he feels the heaviness as if it was by his own hands.

The older brother is Austin, who, on a bad day is all scowl and avoids his brother like he’s the plague. On good days, he’s mellow and serious faced, though a slight grin will break his face at whatever antics his brother creates.  He’s polite when he wants to be and curses a blue streak when he doesn’t. His older by three years, but at thirteen, acts like he’s thirty.

His younger brother, Owen, is the complete opposite, all grin and sunny smiles. He borders on what just might be ADHD, and on any given day, can test the patience of a saint. Owen is like a wind-up toy that never dies. He’s loud, doesn’t know the meaning of personal space and will invade it. He’s ten, almost eleven, insanely reckless and is quick to befriend everyone.

They spend their summer vacation in the woods, making the area their secret spot, claiming the area for themselves. Their days are spent wading in the streams, eating the wild, sun-sweetened blackberries that grow there, and, at the end of the day, watch the night starry sky and wonder (silently, always slightly) how it would be if their sister was next to them to enjoy it also.

Her name is Cheyenne and she’s the first girl to punch Austin in the face, the first girl to give him a bloody nose. The brothers were sneaking into the junkyard, trying to find some wood to finish building their clubhouse with. She stands over the two of them, long brown wavy hair pulled in a ponytail, dark skin covered in red bites and scars. She’s the same age as Owen, which makes the punch more embarrassing because a little kid just socked the shit out of him.

She demands to know what they’re doing and Owen is about to answer because he doesn’t want to be on the receiving end of that punch.

But Austin beat him to it, telling [her that] they want the extra planks lining the junkyard. Cheyenne agrees to let them have it if she can join in their club. Owen says yes right away. Austin glares at his brother, but finally gives in, unable to say no to the goofy-ass puppy eyed look his brother is giving him.

He hates that look with a passion sometimes.

She takes one look at their clubhouse, declares it a piece of shit and helps rebuild it, which, as it turns out, she’s really good at. She tells them [that] it’s a skill she’s learned from her father, and the [two] brothers deal with her bossiness. Well, Owen does anyways. Austin just wants to punch her. But that means she’ll just hit him back and the two of them will get into a fight. Cheyenne will win because she has discovered the dirty tactic of kneeing boys in the groin.

They celebrate the newly build clubhouse by buying cola and fries at the local burger place. Owen tells her she’s cool for a girl, a complement from him because he’s still in the ‘girls have cooties’ stage.

Cheyenne punches him in the arm goodhearted and laughs; it’s loud and wild, just like her personality, making Austin grin like a damn idiot every time he hears it.

They decorate the clubhouse with anything they can find. Austin finds random street signs in the junkyard, Cheyenne places some cartoon posters on the wall (he makes fun of them, and nearly gets kicked in the balls for it) and Owen places anything and everything all over.

There are glow-in-the-dark stars and planets on the ceiling, he’s hung wind chimes from it and plasters comics [that] he thinks are funny from the newspaper on to the wall.

It’s too small to be called a home, but it’s where they all feel comfortable at, so a second sort of home it becomes.

When school starts, they meet Benjamin. He’s fifteen, with wild black hair. He saves Owen from being mugged after school, winning the admiration and respect of Austin; which is a feat in itself. He soon becomes their unofficial bodyguard, making sure they get to school (when they feel like going) and watching over them when they go to the clubhouse after school, when he doesn’t have work.

Or what he calls work. They’re not sure what he does, only that it means he has a lot of money at the end of the week.

Ben isn’t the best role model, nor does he try to be. He teaches them how to hot wire a car, lets them smoke his cigarettes (a habit Austin gets into because it makes him look cool in front girls), gets them into ‘R’- rated movies and even lets them try beer for the first time. Owen and Cheyenne dislike it, but Austin likes it and downs the bottle quickly, and is disappointed when Ben shoots him down for another bottle.

Over few months later, it’s Austin who finally works up the courage to ask Ben why he stays around kids like them. He shrugs, downs the last of his beer and tells the boy they remind him of his younger brother. He doesn’t say any more than that. Austin has enough tact not to pry.

He dreams of fire, of smoke. He can hear the scream ringing in his ear; it’s hervoice, begging him to find her. But he can’t because the smoke is too thick, the flames too hot. Can feel it as it blisters his skin; can’t do anything but hear the screams, begging for the fire to stop. Can’t do anything but cry at his own helplessness.

Austin wakes up to tears streaming down his face, nightmare (or would it be more accurate to call it a memory?) fresh in his mind. Owen’s sleeping fitfully next him, and he knows he’s not the only one who can’t forget what’s happened to their once perfect family.

The older boy has foundation in his hand, doing his best to try and cover up the bruises that mar his brother’s face. Owen’s looking at him solemnly, his silent way of complaining and Austin looks at him apologetically.  He applies the last of the makeup and rubs it in, making sure it masks the fresh bruises correctly.

Owen [is] still giving him that look when he comes back into the bathroom, looking as if he wants to say something, but the roar of their father’s voice stops him in his tracks. Out of habit, the younger boy ducks behind him older brother, something [that], any other time, is quick to be met with Austin’s disdain.

But this isn’t any other time and Austin protectively shields his brother, waiting for the moment that the old man will somehow be set on, and throw blows at, them.

It doesn’t come though, their father seems more focused on yelling at the neighbor about their dog than them and the brothers take the opportunity to sneak out the house before the yelling (or more) is directed at them.

The look Ben’s giving [them] makes Austin shift his eyes to the ground because he doesn’t want to see disappointment, and perhaps pity, in the older teen’s eyes.

Austin mumbles out something, not wanting to bug Benjamin with his problems, but a snort is what he receives in reply.

The black teen gives him a weak lopsided smirk, and offers the two a place to stay with them, that is, if they want it. Austin feels embarrassed when Ben admits he’s comes to regard the three of them as siblings of sorts.

BASICS:

Genres:

Alternate World: A setting that is not our world, but may be similar. This includes “portal fantasies” in which characters find an alternative world through their own. An example would be The Chronicles of Narnia.

Arabian: Fantasy that is based on the Middle East and North Africa.

Arthurian: Set in Camelot and deals with Arthurian mythology and legends.

Bangsian: Set in the afterlife or deals heavily with the afterlife. It most often deals with famous and historical people as characters. An example could be The Lovely Bones.

Celtic: Fantasy that is based on the Celtic people, most often the Irish.

Christian: This genre has Christian themes and elements.

Classical: Based on Roman and Greek myths.

Contemporary: This genre takes place in modern society in which paranormal and magical creatures live among us. An example would be the Harry Potter series.

Dark: This genre combines fantasy and horror elements. The tone or feel of dark fantasy is often gloomy, bleak, and gothic.

Epic: This genre is long and, as the name says, epic. Epic is similar to high fantasy, but has more importance, meaning, or depth. Epic fantasy is most often in a medieval setting.

Gaslamp: Also known as gaslight, this genre has a Victorian or Edwardian setting.

Gunpowder: Gunpowder crosses epic or high fantasy with “rifles and railroads”, but the technology remains realistic unlike the similar genre of steampunk.

Heroic: Centers on one or more heroes who start out as humble, unlikely heroes thrown into a plot that challenges them.

High: This is considered the “classic” fantasy genre. High fantasy contains the general fantasy elements and is set in a fictional world.

Historical: The setting in this genre is any time period within our world that has fantasy elements added.

Medieval: Set between ancient times and the industrial era. Often set in Europe and involves knights. (medieval references)

Mythic: Fantasy involving or based on myths, folklore, and fairy tales.

Portal: Involves a portal, doorway, or other entryway that leads the protagonist from the “normal world” to the “magical world”.

Quest: As the name suggests, the protagonist in this genre sets out on a quest. The protagonist most frequently searches for an object of importance and returns home with it.

Sword and Sorcery: Pseudomedieval settings in which the characters use swords and engage in action-packed plots. Magic is also an element, as is romance.

Urban: Has a modern or urban setting in which magic and paranormal creatures exist, often in secret.

Wuxia: A genre in which the protagonist learns a martial art and follows a code. This genre is popular in Chinese speaking areas.

Word Counts:

Word counts for fantasy are longer than other genres because of the need for world building. Even in fantasy that takes place in our world, there is a need for the introduction of the fantasy aspect.

Word counts for established authors with a fan base can run higher because publishers are willing to take a higher chance on those authors. First-time authors (who have little to no fan base) will most likely not publish a longer book through traditional publishing. Established authors may also have better luck with publishing a novel far shorter than that genre’s expected or desired word count, though first-time authors may achieve this as well.

A general rule of thumb for first-time authors is to stay under 100k and probably under 110k for fantasy.

Other exceptions to word count guidelines would be for short fiction (novellas, novelettes, short stories, etc.) and that one great author who shows up every few years with a perfect 200k manuscript.

But why are there word count guidelines? For young readers, it’s pretty obvious why books should be shorter. For other age groups, it comes down to the editor’s preference, shelf space in book stores, and the cost of publishing a book. The bigger the book, the more expensive it is to publish.

General Fantasy: 75k - 110k

Epic Fantasy: 90k - 120k

Contemporary Fantasy: 90k - 120k

Urban Fantasy: 80k - 100k

Middle Grade: 45k - 70k

YA: 75k - 120k (depending on sub-genre)

Adult: 80k - 120k (depending on sub-genre)

WORLD BUILDING:

A pseudo-European medieval setting is fine, but it’s overdone. And it’s always full of white men and white women in disguise as white men because around 85% (ignore my guess/exaggeration, I only put it there for emphasis) of fantasy writers seem to have trouble letting go of patriarchal societies. 

Guys. It’s fantasy. You can do whatever you want. You can write a fantasy that takes place in a jungle. Or in a desert. Or in a prairie. The people can be extremely diverse in one region and less diverse in another. The cultures should differ. Different voices should be heard. Queer people exist. People of color exist. Not everyone has two arms or two legs or the ability to hear.

As for the fantasy elements, you also make up the rules. Don’t go searching around about how a certain magic spell is done, just make it up. Magic can be whatever color you want. It can be no color at all. You can use as much or as little magic as you want.

Keep track of what you put into your world and stick to the rules. There should be limits, laws, cultures, climates, disputes, and everything else that exists in our world. However, you don’t have to go over every subject when writing your story.

Like the one Daniel Harris has; the red one.” Mycroft scoffs behind the newspaper he's reading. “You simply want one because you're jealous,” “Oh, Mike, stop it!” Comes the reply from Mummy. “Sherlock can get a pet if he wants one. You never wanted one, for some whatever reason. I'm think it's a fine idea; and I'm sure your father would agree.” Mycroft gives one of his wry smiles. “I didn't want one because they're loud, messy and are generally unpleasant animals.
