Awesome Intermediate Language-Learner Things
Feeling like you haven’t made progress, then looking back on your previous work and realising you’ve actually come a long way
When you start to use prepositions, interjections and grammatical elements that don’t exist in your native language correctly without thinking because they just feel right
Being able to get your point across most of the time, even if it’s in a slightly awkward roundabout way sometimes
Natives telling you you’re good at the language
Being able to watch TV shows, read books and listen to the radio and actually understand enough to get the gist, even if you don’t understand everything
Developing an understanding of the culture through the language and feeling yourself grow as a person as a result
Listening to songs in your TL that you haven’t heard for a while and realising you can actually understand a lot of the lyrics now
Starting to understand puns, double-meanings and innuendos you missed previously and going :O :O :O
Discovering a wealth of idioms, many of which are funny, insightful or just plain cute
When you stop translating words in your head and start just understanding
When people mention that you speak your target language, and instead of saying “I really don’t” you can say “well yes, kind of”

七五三 - Shichi-Go-San
Shichi-Go-San, literally meaning “7-5-3,” is one of Japan’s two major coming of age holidays. Although it is officially celebrated on November 15th, the celebrations usually come the weekend after.
The holiday is a day of prayer and celebration for girls age 3 and 7, and boys age 3 and 5, because odd numbers are traditionally seen as lucky. Although the holiday began in the Heian Period (平安時代), it wasn’t until samurai culture became widespread that Shichi-Go-San gained most of its modern traditions.
A type of candy known as “Chitose-ame” or “candy of a thousand years” (千歳飴) is given to children on this holiday. The packaging has a picture of a crane and a turtle on it, which are both animals that are symbols of longevity and health.
The age 3 is chosen because traditionally, this is the age that parents begin to let their children grow their hair longer. While this practice is no longer as widespread as it once was, the age of 3 still remains an important milestone.
Boys at the age of 5 wear what is called a hakama (袴) for the first time during Shichi-Go-San in a celebration called hakamagi (袴着). Similarly, at the age of 7, girls transition from wearing thin strands on their kimono to the thick, decorated band known as an obi (帯) during a celebration called obitoki (帯解き).
Any tips for advanced/intermediate lvl Japanese learners?
I’ve been kinda stuck in the learning somewhere between beginner N3 and N2. This stadium of consist forgetting and repeating is draining…so I would appreciate any tips for learning better japanese! (besides the nihongo 101: learn every day, mix vocab/kanji/grammar sessions, read original material etc.)
Just saying Hi! is also welcome (maybe someone has the same problems and no time but lots of motivation for learning ❤️)
Yesterday morning I had the round reading room at the library completely to myself.
- ̗̀ an old picture from last year in my photo library ̖́-
I was learning Japanese by myself + practiced writing Hiragana + Katakana. I can read Hiragana + Katakana now w/o referring to my notes, but I can’t read them quite fluently yet + I can also write them now (slowly).
Till now, I still can’t handle Kanji yet. I know Chinese but its pronunciation is different from Kanji. Their meanings are similar to each other, so whenever I read Kanji, I can mostly understand the meaning but I can’t pronounce them without the Hiragana.
I can understand everyday Japanese conversations (from watching anime ever since I was 8y/o) but can’t speak fluently yet 😅
Ah this is so beautiful! Definitely get back into it, you definitely have an advantage knowing Chinese! Just gotta learn the readings which can be a pain but you can do it!
