Fly Profile: The Iron Lotus
Who: Designed by Lance Egan, one of the most innovative tyers in the U.S.Â
What: Hook: Barbless Jig size 12-18, Bead: Tungsten Gold or Black Nickel (northeast), Thread: Olive UTC, or Camel UTC (northeast), Tail: Coq De Leon, Rib: White 6/0, Wingcase: Black Flashback Tinsel, Hot Spot: Read UTC 70, Thorax: Natural or Copper (northeast) AZN synthetic peacock dub
Where: Anywhere, this fly has proven to be effective in it's variations across the country.Â
When: Spring and Summer. First invented to profile a blue winged olive, this fly crushes in spring. But, also works on a consistent basis in the Summer, as it is more of a suggestive pattern.
How: Fishing it with a tight line or euro system can be deadly, but this fly also works extremely well under an indicator, or in it's smaller sizes as a dropper off of a dry fly.
Why: Because of the fly's suggestive profile, it simulates many different style mayflies, I really like it's "teardrop" shape when it's wet, it's also extremely durable. Another reason it fishes so well, are it's two main triggers, a red hotspot, and the flashback wing case. I have tried thin skin also, and usually I am fine with subbing materials. However, I do actually believe the flashback just gives it that extra something, and has out fished, all other variations I have tried.
