btw x2, i do think people who say shit like what i referenced in the op are also showing they're in a myopic, probably-white, probably-urban, probably-anglosphere, probably-housed-and-employed bubble. the only places where disclosing your autism diagnosis (as a verbal, high-masking, etc autistic) warrants you any type of social leeway or grace are progressive-leaning professional environments with vested interest in preserving progressive social dynamics. if you are receiving accommodations (or even being consulted on inclusivity/accessibility), then you are in an environment that, regardless of how ableist it is, still affords you ten times the amount of dignity, humanity, and personal autonomy than if you go two steps outside of your bubble. most people still believe autistics are soulless, lacking some essential human quality that renders us completely alien and devoid of internal life. most people still believe it is acceptable to abuse us because we just do not experience emotions or pain in the legitimate way allistics do. autistics are in guardianships and conservatorships because we are autistic and we are in special education because we are autistic. most professionally diagnosed autistics are still put in therapies that actively abuse us and we do not have the social or legal autonomy to deny consent for these practices even as adults. most of us are not employed. you do not see us because we are institutionalized and homeless and crazy and living in our abusive parents' basements and unemployed and laughed out of every social space for adults when we even do manage to scrape out the autonomy to go into community unsupervised. because we are autistic.
