that man killed people! he hunted them down and assaulted them and killed them and ate them, turned them into vampires without sparing a thought for whether they wanted it. in fact, if they wanted it, he wouldn’t give it to them, because he preferred when they fought back and he could overpower them. he both emotionally and physically abused his fledgelings and openly admitted to enjoying tormenting the human residents of oakhurst. he coerced apo into consenting to him assaulting her. and then he manipulated the majority of town into believing he wasn’t that bad and had changed his ways and should be allowed to walk away unharmed. and he did! he got away with it! they let him go!

and isn’t that great? the ending of vsmp mirrors real-world examples of powerful men who get away with abuse and assault and anything they want really, just because people think they’re more likable than their victims. doesn’t that make you want to die? isn’t it just soooo fun?

Abolish’s eyes gleam unnaturally in the evening light behind the doctor’s clinic.

“Oh,” Cleo says. “You mean that kind of problem.”

Abolish is tense like a thing straining against its leash. In this case, the leash is Legs’s arm. Legs clutches the collar of Abolish’s bloodied shirt, keeps Abolish in place with grim unhappiness.

“You know more about this than me,” Legs says. “I thought you might know how to… help. Without causing further panic.”

Cleo laughs, feeling unaccountable. There’s a dribble of crimson coming from the corner of Abolish’s mouth. Abolish is unspeaking, trembling hopelessly. Working breed, like her.

male translators adding misogynistic overtones to helen’s dialogue that weren’t present in the homeric original is kinda like the fh happily ever after, in a way

bear with me; this is still about minecraft youtube. it’s about the misogyny inherent in translating a word that means dog as bitch only when it’s applied to a woman. it’s about male translators making helen call herself a whore when in the original text she called herself an ill omen. it’s about selective editing, at the core of it; redubbing and rewriting helen’s description of herself into how men think she should describe herself: slut, whore, bitch. it’s about dogs :) and about how no one has ever seen helen as helen, they only see her as an image, a symbol, an object, a possession. she’s trapped in her own narrative. she’s a harbinger of doom. she’s not even allowed, in translation, to keep her own words. in 3L ep 1 scott tells jimmy use your words and then edits out specifically that line. in 3L ep 4 jimmy says I look like the villain, but I wasn’t and scott edits out specifically but I wasn’t. jimmy didn’t get a say in whether he was going to be part of scott’s happily ever after, because you only get to see that happily ever after from scott’s perspective. he wanted jimmy there and so jimmy was there. twice now has helen’s eidolon been brought to troy.

a note: helen does have a misogynistic view of herself and her role in the narrative—all characters in the iliad view helen through the lens of both cultural and personal misogyny—but the specific word choices made by male translators often superimpose modern misogynistic language atop the original layer present in the text. one such instance is when helen, speaking to hector, refers to herself as ἐμεῖο κυνὸς κακομηχάνου ὀκρυοέσσης (6.344). literally translated, that’s I | dog | harmful | horrible. most male translators over the years have interpreted dog as bitch, e.g. “bitch that I am, vicious, scheming— / horror to freeze the heart!” (robert fagles, 1990); “I’m a horrible, conniving bitch” (ian johnston, 2000); “I am a bitch and a cold-hearted mischief-maker” (anthony verity, 2011); “I’m a bitch, a horrible mischief-maker!” (peter green, 2015). when the same word is used elsewhere to describe men or actual dogs it is usually not translated as bitch.

a further note: to be clear, I’m comparing the dehumanisation inherent in stripping a woman of her own words when translating her dialogue to the dehumanisation jimmy experienced by being stripped of his autonomy in third life. I’m not saying the way jimmy was treated was misogynistic, although most hierarchical systems of dehumanisation are structured similarly, so there will of course be parallels. really the reason I’m comparing jimmy to helen is because they’re both hot and everyone wants them.
