I have a stock format and structure I use.

Dear Person I am Writing To:

This is an optional sentence introducing who I am and work for, included if the addressee has never corresponded with me before. The second optional sentence reminds the person where we met, if relevant. This sentence states the purpose of the email.

This optional paragraph describes in more detail what’s needed. This sentence discusses relevant information like how soon an answer is needed, what kind of an answer is needed, and any information that the other person might find useful. If there’s a lot of information, it’s a good idea to separate this paragraph into two or three paragraphs to avoid having a Wall of Text.

If a description paragraph was used, close with a restatement of the initial request, in case the addressee ignored the opening paragraph.

This sentence is just a platitude (usually thanking them for their time) because people think I’m standoffish, unreasonably demanding, or cold if it’s not included.

Everything You Need To Know About MLA Format

General Format:

8.5 x 11 inch paper

Double spaced

Times New Roman font

12 pt font

Only one space after each period

1 inch margins on all sides

Indent the first line of each paragraph by half an inch

Use a header that includes your last name and page number in the top right hand corner

The First Page:

If the publisher is unknown, write “n.p.” in its place (no quotation marks)

Hey babes! August is here, which means that the first day of class isn’t far for a lot of us! The first day is exciting, but it can also be pretty scary. Here’s your guide to tackling the first day with grace, and setting yourself up for your best year yet!

be prepared

Having the best first day means putting in some work beforehand! This way you can wake up the day-of and have a relaxing morning, instead of rushing around trying to find your textbooks. 

Save your class schedule to your phone

I like to add each class (including details like the room #) as an individual reminder in my iPhone. That way all you have to do is swipe right on the lock screen and everything you need to know is there! If you have another type of phone, setting a picture of your schedule as your home screen works as well. 

Prepare your supplies

Make sure you have everything you’ll need for the first day, and pack your backpack completely the night before. 

Think of some ice breaker answers

I don’t know about you, but for me the worst part of the first day is sharing “a fun fact about yourself” or “one word that describes you” in every class. Save yourself some stress and think of those now!

Pick out your outfit

First impressions are important, so show up on your first day feeling confident about how you look! Make sure everything is ironed and laid out the night before so all you have to do is put it on!

Pack a lunch and prep breakfast

Make sure you have a healthy lunch packed and ready to go before you go to bed the night before, and go ahead and get a head start on breakfast too. Lay out the ingredients on the counter so all you have to do is fire the waffle iron up and go. 

Get a good night’s sleep

Go to bed a little earlier than you normally would. Nerves about the first day mean that you may not get to sleep as fast, and you’ll probably be waking up earlier than you’re used to anyway.

Wake up early

If you wake up a little earlier than you need to you can start your day relaxed, and that sets the tone for the whole day! Take your time getting ready & eating breakfast, and avoid using your phone (or you’ll totally find yourself on Twitter instead of getting dressed)

Get to school early

It usually takes me a little while to get my bearings on the first day of class, especially if my first class is in a new building. Show up early so you have time to scope out the halls and find your way.

Bring a planner

You’ll be getting a lot of dates thrown at you the first day, so be sure to bring your planner to write it all down!

Introduce yourself

Before class, say hello to the person you’re sitting next to and get to know them a little! After class be sure to introduce yourself to your teacher (or say hello if you’ve had them before). It’ll leave a good impression and may help you out with your participation grade!

Relax!

First days can be scary, but they can also be fun! Try to relax and enjoy it and know that you’ll have the best year ever!

*from someone that survived her own first year of university

university is SO different from high school; a brilliant student in high school can be just a mediocre university student, and this is simply how it is when people from all over the country come together in a class. 

so it is okay to stress, but only if afterwards you’re just trying your best! it doesn’t matter how much you already know (though it helps), but how willing you are to learn! so, really, if you want to be there, you can make it!

make sure you eat properly; after a while, your body will start feeling gross and it’ll eventually show in your capacity to do your work. go out, buy that extra meat, extra salads, extra fruits, at least every once in a while. it’s not luxury, it’s a need

go the extra mile. no matter how optional a task may be or how tongue-tied you feel on a particular day, put yourself out there. write that essay, do that projects, speak about your ideas. your teachers really appreciate it when they ask for interractions from students and they provide, and it’s nice to have your teacher know you by face and by actions. it might prove useful when they’re grading you during the finals as well.

go to all (most) of your classes, no matter how optional the attendace is or how little you understand on the moment. in the long run, it will matter, and it’s super helpful to complete all your materials with the extra knowledge you got from the class. and no one and nothing will truly replace a teacher’s explanation.

try to make friends with those around you; most are probably just as lost and lonely as you are and it’s good to have people around you who can motivate you when you’re done or with whom to simply share the struggles of getting an education. sure, not everyone will like you, but those that will, make sure they can stick.

get involved in all the extra programmes that you’re interested in! you’re young and a student once! these opportunities are mostly a once in your lifetime thing! get out there and try everything: go to that book club, get your ass for the cinephile gathering, sign up for exchange programs, help out your teachers with their projects, do volunteer work! whatever floats your boat, but just do it!

also keep your eyes wide open to catch all the interesting lectures happening in your school. check those posters, check those subjects, check those dates and go. most of the times, you’ll leave knowing much more and having something to think on.

do your reading and assignments ahead of time! you don’t want it to be 2 dayss before your first exam, and you still have to finish essays and books.

the library really is your best friend! either as a study place or alternative to spending all your money on the source materials for your homework.

tidy up at least once a week; as school materials will start pile up, it will be harder and harder to find anything and you’ll only just end up frustrated

no one knows you better than you do, so make sure to take only the amount of work you know you can do. it’s okay if you want to keep your first year as free as you can, so you have time to acommodate, and just as okay it is to try all the available classes if you can. 

keep your facebook name your real one so people can find you. make sure you’re in every possible group within the first week of university, so you know what’s going on. use said facebook groups to ask about teachers and classes, or find offers on used textbooks that are much cheaper than if you would have bought them yourself.

talk with the upperclassmen if you have questions, or simply for tips! really, it tickles our ego to have people actually interested in the experiences we have to share and most of us are more than happy to clear any misunderstandings or help you guys get a classroom right.

carry pills and proteine bars with you, especially if you spend a long time away from home! you never know when pain or hunger hits you, and it is better to be prepared than sorry. 

it became a running joke at this point, i know, but right during the exam period you’ll want to do everything you haven’t done ever. so make sure you nurture your hobbies as well as your studies, and hopefully your interests are not too time consuming or at least require frequent/long breaks.

literally no one cares about how you look; so wear that make-up and nice clothes if you feel up for it, but if you don’t, that’s fine as well.

it will be done in the blink of an eye. so be true to yourself and your wishes, enjoy what you’re studying and, remember, you can do it!

Things People Don’t Realize They Need at College/University

Hello class of 2021!

I know a lot of you are probably in your beginning stages of shopping for college, as a sophomore who is about to start her second year of dorm life (This time as a RA!) I thought I would throw together a list of things that people don’t realize that they need while they’re away from home.

Air Freshener, chances are your dorm has been closed up since the last person left it in the spring, opening a window and spraying some febreze works wonders for a stuffy room

Clorox Wipes, it never hurts to wipe down door handles and flat surfaces, especially during cold and flu season.

409/Comet Spray, Guys seriously. Clean your shower tiles. 

Dust Ruffle, seriously. Your room WILL collect dust, I know its easy to ignore. But just set aside 1 day a month to dust all the furniture in your dorm room

Laundry Scent Boosters (Like Downy Unstoppables) The washers and dryers are used by hundreds of different people, chances are they may have a funky smell to them, scent boosters are a great way to make sure your laundry comes out fresh, no matter how old the washing machines are

Pepper Spray, whether you’re living on an urban or rural campus, pepper spray is a great (and legal) way to protect yourself. Remember, knives are NOT allowed on any college campus. I would recommend a pepper spray with UV dye, it reflects light and makes it easier for the attacker to get caught by the police

Flashlight, no, not just the one on your phone! You may never know when the power will go out in your dorm room.

Epsom Salts, if your dorm room has a bath, Epsom salts are an awesome (and cheap!) way to relax. If your dorm only has a shower, put a few drops of lavender, melaluca, or lemongrass essential oil on the tiles before you start your shower.

First-aid-kit, it doesn’t have to be complicated. Just a pack of band-aids, neosporin, some gauze, and a pair of tweezers

Emergency kit, hopefully you’ll never have to use this, but last year I was trapped in my college town after a hurricane caused more damage than originally expected. A reflective blanket (you can get these at sports stores for $10), glow sticks, an extra flashlight, and a highway map are great things to start you out. 

Cash, Always have at least $10 in cash wherever you go. Chances are you’ll find an adorable bakery off campus that only takes cash, or you’ll need to tip a waitress.

Reminder

A lot of things that seem like facts are really assumptions – and ones that aren’t actually true! Personally, I am especially prone to this in social situations

It might seem like you aren’t connecting with people, when really you are 

It might seem like you aren’t understood when you are 

It might seem like others find your annoying/boring/uninteresting, when they actually like you

It might seem people are reacting badly to something you said or did, when they’re actually just neutral

These things only seem like objective facts, in reality they are highly biased. If you are prone to it, this might just be your brains default setting (for now). Just realizing that what your brain is telling you might not be true can make a huge difference

Here’s a list of some of the things I learnt in my first year of college that I wish I had known before I started:

Unidays!! So before I started I went out & bought new clothes, notebooks, stationery etc. for college, & I wish I hadn’t because most of the stores I bought from, have a student discount when you use Unidays/show your id in store. ((They also have 10% Apple if you’re buying new electronics!!))

Lecturers do care. All through secondary/high school, I was told, “when you go to college, lecturers won’t care about you.”  From my experience, this isn’t true. Most lecturers do care because your performance in exams reflects on them as a lecturer. While they won’t spoon-feed you, they are there to help you if you’re struggling/have a few questions. 

Don’t copy down the lecturer’s slides (if they post them online!). In my first semester, I wrote everything off the slides, and spent so much time in the lecture paying attention to the slides, I missed what the lecturer was saying, which is more important to note down as you won’t be able to find it online. 

What buildings and lecture halls my classes were in. If you can, try going to each building/hall to see exactly where you need on your first day/week.

You don’t need to sit at the front of a lecture hall to get the best out of a lecture. I thought before college the only way I could pay attention would be by sitting up the front but I’ve found this isn’t the case for me. I work best sitting in the middle because then I don’t have to make eye-contact with the lecturer (something I find really uncomfortable) and I’m not worried about what’s happening behind me. Everyone’s different so try to find a place that suits you! 

It’s totally okay to do things alone. In school, I feel like there’s a bit of a group culture, where you can’t do anything without someone else but in college, it’s good to go to lectures/have lunch and go the library by yourself sometimes (& no one will judge you for it). 

The library isn’t the only study place. The library can be intimidating especially for 1st years. When I started I loved reading rooms which were smaller and more private. 

How to print stuff off in college. Learn how to do it asap! I only found out in my second semester. It’s just something that’s handy to know! Before you go to college just google your college’s name & print and you’ll find out how.

The college doctor’s office is free/a lot cheaper! I didn’t actually use the doctor’s office but it’s good to know how much it’s going to be if you do need to go! (This depends on what college you go to, check beforehand)

You don’t need to buy the textbook. I know so many people who paid a lot of $ for a textbook when they could have used one of the library’s multiple copies or got a cheaper one from a past student.

College can offer a lot more than just classes. Volunteering opportunities, societies, clubs, counselling services are just a few things that are available that aren’t related to class, make use of them.

The people you’re friends with the first week, may not still be your friends at the start of the year (and that’s okay!). You’ll meet a lot of people in college and it can take time to find people you really connect  & want to be friends with. 

You may have to study something you’re not that big of a fan of at first. Some courses are general to start off with and let you specialise later. Don’t be put off by this, work hard and it’ll pay off when you get to pick what you want to study later!

College is hard. You may get homesick, find your classes difficult, or feel lonely but it get’s better. It’s only normal to find a new situation difficult but stick with it & you’ll get through it!!

10 small tips to improve your productivity

Who can resist reading another little post full of tips to help you get more work done? Here is a few things that I find useful when trying to get myself motivated.

Clear desk, clear mind - I like to organise things before I start working. If things are messy, I get a little preoccupied and procrastinate even more. My suggestion is clear your desk, sort everything you’ll need to study and get on!

The two minute rule - If a task that needs to be done takes less than two minutes, just do it. My dad has often suggested that this is a great way to sort out your priorities and so far it has worked for me. Things like check my emails, cross off events from my planner, file something away don’t take long but get you in the mood for productivity. As they say “object in motion, stay in motion”.

Break your time up - Schedule your study time and any breaks you need to take. This helps structure your day and acts as a motivation to get things done. Especially if you can reward yourself at the end!

Leave your phone alone - Like most people I use my phone constantly but when I’m trying to work, it is best to leave it alone. Out of sight, out of mind. Try leaving it on silent and behind you so you aren’t tempted to pick it up after every beep. Use your break times to check it.

Find your top three to five priorities - Seeing a long list of things to do is usually, for some people, kind of counterproductive. Figure out the main things that need to be done and work on those. If you’re able to complete those main things, you’ll feel like you’ve accomplished the days necessities and may even want to complete some more.

Try using a mindmap instead of a to do list - Apparently using a mindmap layout instead of a traditional list can help boost productivity. It is a little more funky way to see all your outstanding tasks and might not look as overwhelming as a super long list.

Wear headphones - You don’t have to always listen to things but it can help block out any noise that can distract you. If you’re someone that likes some music, try songs with little or no words. This is a great playlist by Spotify.

Don’t multitask - As much as you think you can do it, trying to multitask usually ends up in a confused mess and takes twice the time. Stick to one task at a time. If you think of something you need to do, write it down and do it later.

Change things up - Doing the same things in the same place can get boring. Make the effort every now and then to change where you’re studying or how you’re studying. This can include moving your studying from the desk to the kitchen table for a change of scenery, or making flash cards instead of annotating your notes. Studying with a family member or friends is a fun way to get some work done!

Be positive - Most people have times when they just don’t want to study or anything, it is natural. However it is not worth sitting staring at your books in an unmotivated mood just waiting to feel inspired. If you’re not feeling it, do something else for a while. Come back to it a bit later and have another go. Usually walking away and coming back is all you need to feel more productive.

This is what I consider my perfect study routine. Note that I don’t always have time to do all these things, but I strive to do them. ‘Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars’, ya know?

This post is all about building habits. Studying is a habit and you shouldn’t rely on motivation to do it.

Warming up to it:

Don’t overwhelm yourself: if you’ve never studied regularly before, don’t be like ‘yeah, I’m gonna spend the whole afternoon studying!’. Start with 15-30 min for every lecture/class you’ve had that day.

Do time those 15-30 minutes. When you’ve got a set end time, it doesn’t seem as awful.

Actually if you’ve taken good notes and payed attention in class, you shouldn’t need any more than 30 minutes on a regular basis but hey, life happens.

Give yourself ‘relax time’ after you get home. But here’s the catch, set an exact time at which this break ends and you start doing stuff.

Print out a schedule

include classes, meal times, your relax time, any other activities you do regularly and even the hours you plan on sleeping. 

Make sure you schedule in free time or you’ll burn out. 

The remaining will be your ‘study hours’.

Assign an ‘I don’t get this shit’ percentage to every class - Now count your study hours and use those percentages to figure out how many of those hours will go into each class.

Remember that your schedule is a guideline - Trust me, I’ve tried following it to the second and well, you may end up tearing your notes to shreds. The only thing you should absolutely stick to is the end of your relax time.

Make it achievable

Write down three to five tasks that you know you can accomplish in the time you’ve given yourself.

DON’T STOP UNTIL YOU’VE CHECKED OFF THOSE BOXES.

(I mean obviously stop if you need a break duh)

It’s better to aim for less and finish everything because having unchecked boxes will just make you feel like you haven’t accomplished much.

Get a hobby or something to look forward to at the end of the day - It will motivate you to stop procrastinating and finsih your tasks so that you can have time for this hobby.

Keep yourself in check – It’s a habit, remember? Well, there’s nothing better for building habits than seeing your progress. I suggest you use something like this weird thing I made (I’m sure you can make it cuter by hand but this is just an example) and color in how much time you study each day.

some tips for incoming college freshmen, based on the mistakes i made during my first year

✎ don’t get in the habit of skipping class for no reason. really. it might seem harmless (especially if attendance isn’t required) but it will most likely end up affecting you negatively. just go to class.

✎ try to be as organized as possible. organization can’t harm you and there are so many potential benefits to keeping your school and personal life in order.

✎ don’t be afraid to enjoy yourself. honestly, what’s the point if school is only ever miserable. there are so many ways to enjoy your experience at college, so take a break from your studies every once in a while. otherwise, you might find yourself hating school.

✎ that being said, don’t spend too much time socializing and partying. or, at least, don’t choose it over your school work altogether. you don’t want the social aspect of college to overpower the academic aspect. after all, you are most likely paying a lot of money to study there, and ignoring your studies will only harm you. find a balance.

✎ even if your classes don’t start until 2 in the afternoon, wake up at a reasonable time. it might be difficult if you’re used to sleeping in very late, but the morning is the perfect time to get some things done, and sleeping in until 10 minutes before your class does waste a lot of time. plus, you’ll probably do better in class if you didn’t just wake up.

✎ naps are good though! as long as you don’t nap during the whole day, napping is very beneficial.

✎ don’t get too involved in drama with other people. if your friend group becomes draining and exhausting because of drama, recognize that it might be better for you to take a step back.

✎ don’t get caught up in the idea of having the perfect “college experience.” do what you want to do, not what everyone else does or what you believe you’re supposed to do. there are different types of college experiences, and you don’t have to, for example, join a sorority/fraternity, go to parties, get drunk/high, etc. just because you think you’re supposed to as a college student.

✎ try to participate in class. i failed at this miserably because of my fear of talking to people lol, but it is best to be more involved in class discussions if you can. this is especially important when participation is part of your grade.

✎ if you have a roommate, don’t expect to be best friends with them. you can, but it’s not always best. in my experience, it tends to work best if you’re friendly with them, but you also have different groups of people you hang out with. this is based on preference though. 

✎ get off of campus sometimes! depending on where you live, there may be a bunch of things you can do in your town with friends. you don’t want to always feel stuck at your school. that being said, there are probably a lot of things to do on campus too. 

✎ if you have a source of income, try to be reasonable with your spending. you should definitely save some money for emergencies. and the money you do spend should be spent reasonably. this isn’t to say you should never spend money on things that you enjoy, but you definitely should have some sort of budget, or you might find yourself wasting all of your money on 2am trips to denny’s (if you’re me, that is). 

✎ sometimes you may need to be alone. don’t feel bad telling your friends ‘no’ every once in a while. you may find it easiest to work alone, or you might just wanna relax without the pressure of being with other people. that’s okay! find a place on campus where you can be away from everyone sometimes.
