MARY OLIVER "The Arrowhead"
The arrowhead, which I found beside the river, was glittering and pointed. I picked it up, and said, "Now, it's mine." I thought of showing it to friends. I thought of putting it-such an imposing trinket— in a little box, on my desk. Halfway home, past the cut fields, the old ghost stood under the hickories. "I would rather drink the wind," he said, "I would rather eat mud and die than steal as you still steal, than lie as you still lie."

DAVID WAGONER "Lost"
Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes beside you Are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here, And you must treat it as a powerful stranger, Must ask permission to know it and be known. The forest breathes. Listen. It answers, I have made this place around you. If you leave it, you may come back again, saying Here. No two trees are the same to Raven. No two branches are the same to Wren. If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you, You are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows Where you are. You must let it find you.

LINDY WEST "The Witches Are Coming"
My husband plays the trumpet, which is a sort of loud pretzel originally invented to blow down the walls of fucking Jericho and, later, to let Civil War soldiers know it was time to kill each other in a river while you chilled eating pigeon in your officer's tent twenty miles away, yet some-how, in modern times, it has become socially acceptable to toot the bad cone inside your house before 10:00 a.m. because it's "your job" and your wife should "get up."
What a world! If one was feeling uncharitable, one might describe the trumpet as a machine where you put in compressed air and divorce comes out, but despite this - despite operating a piece of biblical demolition equipment inside the home every bright, cold morning of his wife's one and only life - the trumpet is not the most annoying thing about my husband.

ROD SERLING Speech at The Library of Congress (1968)
The moment you begin to censor the writer - and history bears this out in the ugliest of fashions - so begins a process of decay in the body politic that ultimately leads to disaster.
