Tengu (A Long-Nosed Goblin), Osamu Kitajima
Osamu Kitajima’s music on the album Benzaiten is a unique blend of traditional Japanese melodies in the structure of rock music; the outcome of this blend is is best described as psychedelic rock. Sections of the album have a traditional Japanese style, while others have a psychedelic rock sound. His music is absolutely fabulous. It has the aggressive edge of rock music with the mystic ambiance of eastern melodies; this album is boldly creative to say the least. A wide variety of instruments were used during the recording of this album to produce these sounds; electric guitar/bass, and drums as well as traditional Japanese instruments such as the shamisen (similar to a banjo), the koto (Japanese harp, basically), and shakuhachi (bamboo flute) just to name a few. Give these songs a couple of listens before forming an opinion, the music I always end up enjoying the most is the music I may not necessarily enjoy after the first listen.
