Helsingborg - Skåne's city by the sea

Today OneWeek In is in Skåne’s North - Helsingborg. Helsingborg is located directly at the sea and used to function as a harbor town.

MUST DO

 Visit Kärnan

The fortress of Helsingbor is open from April onwards and allows an amazing view over the city and the sea. The fortress is incredibly old, it was constructed in 1310. If you want to learn more about Helsingborg and its history it is the place to go

Take the ferry to Helsingør

Helsingborg is conveniently located at the sea very close to the Danish land. Take the ferry (not expensive) for around half an hour and visit Helsingør which is famous for the popular Kronborg castle.

Relaxin Helsingborg’s Parks

If you are in Helsingborg you definitely should enjoy nature in one of the many green areas it has to offer. Such as the following

 Sofiero 

Sofiero is a rather touristy place but worth a visit with its beautiful landscape and Castle Sofiero. Sometimes you can visit events in the park or castle. Check out the program on www.sofiero.se

Pålsjö skog and Slottshagen

Pålsjö skog and Slottshagen are huge green areas. Whereas the first is a bit more like a forest, unkempt and natural, the latter is rather maintained with many plant areas.The Kärnan fortress is located in Slottshagen.

Piazza Deli och Café

Have a coffee or meal at the Piazza Deli och Café in Helsigborg’s city center. It is a quite chic place with medium-ranged prices.

Ebbas Fik

Koppi Kaffe och Rosteri 

One of the nicest cafés with the best coffee in town is Koppi a fairtrade coffee store. The two young owners are winners of the Swedish Barista Championship. You´ll get high quality coffee in a trendy interior.

Thai Corner 

Sympathizers of Thai food will get your money’s worth at Thai Corner a small hidden restaurant. Especially the lunch from 11:50-15:00 is recommendable at an affordable rate of 89sek (~9€). Reserve a table especially on weekends on http://www.thaicorner.se/.

Skånes Nature – Hiking with the Moose

Swedes love the nature and spend much time outside independent from the weather. Whether hiking in one of the national parks, observing moose,or a picnic outside – Skånes nature offers many opportunities for everyone.  

Stenshuvuds Nationalpark

Located at Skånes east coast, this national park is the perfect place for hiking and having a picnic. Stenshuvuds Nationalpark offers different trails through the forest and the hills guaranteeing a stunning views. If you need a break, the white sandy beach will invite you for a picnic on the coast.

Moose

Which animal is first on your mind when you think about Sweden? For many others and us it is the moose, maybe because the typical moose sign is present on almost every road in Sweden. When you are in Sweden, you have to see moose!

Unfortunately, it is not as easy to see them in nature as the signs will warn you. So what about a day trip to a zoo or moose park? In Skåne there are two moose parks for an affordable price: Skånes Ddjurpark in Höör or Ingelbo Moose Park next to Hässleholm. 

  Nimes

Nimes is part of the micro nation Ladonien on Skånes west coast. The construction with its many towers and paths are built out of driftwood. It is a stunning complete artwork and a must do when you are in Sweden’s South.

However, Ladonien and Nimes are not quite easy to find. Located next to the Swedish towns Arild and Mölle, you should drive to Himmelstorp, a sign posted historic estate. Park your car and follow the signs to Nimes which are sometimes just yellow N’s. The walk takes about 40 minutes.

Capital of Skåne: Malmö - A City for Everyone

Hejhej,

today we present you the capital of Skåne.

Malmö is Sweden´s third largest city and is connected to Copenhagen with the Öresund bridge. You shouldn´t miss Turning Torso, Lilla Torg, the City Library, St. Peter´s Church and Malmöhus Castle.

But today it's all about our favorite spots, which make Malmö special for us!

Folkets Park

In this park all generations meet and have a good time. The park is perfect for relaxing on blankets in the grass enjoying the sun or having some drinks in Far I Hatten and later dance in Cuba Café. It´s really worth it to spend some time there and enjoy life!

Di Penco

You like Italian food? Then you should definitely eat at Di Penco. The place is a little bit hidden and in an inconspicuous location. The restaurant is very good: Di penco offers every weekday a lunch menu. Due to the fact that they make everything fresh they only offer two pasta dishes during lunchtime – one vegetarian and one with meat.

They also have a nice terrace to sit outside.

Even if you´re full – you should try the Tiramisu and of course have a good Italian espresso!

Green Mango

Close to folkets park is the Thai restaurant Green Mango. The restaurant has really good food and is (in comparison to other restaurants in Sweden) not expensive. For one main dish you pay 99 kr (around 10€) and the dishes are really big and super delicious.

Green mango is the perfect place for lunch or a nice evening with friends. In summer you can also sit outside on the terrace.   http://greenmango.se/

Green Mango is located in the district Möllevång. Malmö is a very international city and all the different cultures come together in Möllevångstorget. There are very different shops, bars and restaurants and it is the hip area. You can´t leave Malmö without exploring this district!

Skåne’s Beautiful Coast – A Trip to the Sea

The West Coast has a lot to offer and is always worth a visit. Whether for swimming and tanning in summer, kite surfing or a walk at the beach in fall and winter, it is always enjoyable.

Lomma

You can reach Lomma easily by bike or bus from Lund and Malmö. It is a small town but with a special atmosphere. Lomma has a small harbor where you can watch the boatsand fishermen. The beach is perfect for long walks or swimming and tanning in summer.

If you are hungry, thirsty or up for trying(kite) surfing, visit Lomma Beach House  It’s a great and relaxing location directly at the beach with nice peoplehanging around.

Bjärred

Bjärred is only around 6 km away from Lomma and another cute little town directly by the sea. The town offers quite the same as Lomma but what we especially like about Bjärred is the open-air swimming bath and sauna situated 500 meters out on a bridge. After relaxing in the sauna you can have a refreshing dip in the cold seawater.  It is definitely a must-do while being in the Skåne area. If you don't like sauna and swimming, try the restaurant and café which is located on the bridge as well. You can have coffee "in the middle of the sea" and the cake tastes delicious. 

If you are up for a biking tour for example from Lund, these two towns are perfect destinations. You should try it in summer; it is a lot of fun!

Welcome to good old LUND

Lund is one of the oldest student cities in Sweden and belonged to Denmark back in the days. It is located only 30min by train from Copenhagen and a couple of Kilometers away from the sea. In this post we picked out our favorite spots in Lund.

Flea market - Södra Esplanaden Loppis

If you visit Lund over the weekend, you should not miss the flea market on Saturdays at Södra Esplanaden starting at 7:00 in the morning. It is a great spot to find second-hand clothes or just to stroll around.

Lunda Falafel

If you want to have an affordable snack after partying or just when you are shopping, you should try the falafel place, located on the right-hand side of H&M in the city center. You will basically find a door where falafels are sold. - Simple but yum! 

Botanical Garden

The botanical garden in Lund is very recommendable in spring and autumn. It is a great place to have a picnic and relax with your friends on a sunny afternoon.

Café Inkognito

Café Inkognito is located in the city center and seems very inconspicuous from the outside. If you go inside, you order downstairs. Upstairs, you will enjoy the very cool, shabby chic interior. Try the cheesecake with blueberries you won´t regret it, even if it costs 39sek.

Generally you should walk around the city and enjoy the amazing architecture and the Lund Cathedral. There are many cool cafés and restaurants, as well as some shops such as TGR.

One Week In ... Skåne

Hej Hej from Sweden. From today we will spend one week travelling through Skåne, the most southern province of the country.

As we got a lot of positive feedback for our trip through the Netherlands, we decided to take you on another journey.

This week will be filled with insider tips andrecommendations about Skåne's biggest cities – Malmö, Helsingborg and Lund, the beautiful west coast with Lomma and Bjärred as well as national parks, zoos and other fun stuff that you shouldn't miss in Skåne!

5th stop: Groningen or Het Gras van het Noorderplantsoen

Welcome to Groningen. Groningen is a student city with almost 40% of its population being students. Therefore, it is not only a particularly young city but also the world’s cycling city. 

Let’s start our tour around the city.

Grachtenrondvaart 

Why not start off your day relaxing with a boats tour through Groningen’s Grachten. You will already get a good idea of the city structure and architecture. The boats depart right at the station and the tour takes around an hour for a reasonable price.

Martini Kerk 

Afterwards, we suggest walking to the city center; you should take Herestraat, which is Groningen’s main shoppingstreet. After you have seen enough shops, continue walking to Grote Markt whereyou will find the Martini Kerk. It’s the oldest church in Groningen built inthe 13th century. For around 3 euros you can climb the high towerfor a beautiful view over the city.

PS!

After this climb, you definitely deservecoffee and cake, which we will have at PS!. On the way we will pass thebeautiful building of the Rijksuniversiteit in Broerstraat. At PS! you should try the delicious Latte Macchiato or Chai Latte.  

Noorderplantsoen 

After our coffee break let’s visit Noorderplantsoen - Groningen’s fabulous park with small lakes and a lot of space to walk. Especially, in summer you will meet many students socializing, picnicking or tanning. 

Prepare well and listen to "Het Gras van het Noorderplantsoen" before going to a bar tonight.

Lambik 

If you are hungry, one of our favorite restaurants is directly at Noorderplantsoen, Lambik. From the outside you wouldn’t expect something special. However, Lambik is a cute place with great food. They offer two homemade meal options per day (one vegetarian), which consist of three courses. The whole meal costs around 10 euros and tastes delicious.

Der Witz 

Let’s walk back to the city center to start our night. We suggest grabbing a few beers at der Witz, which is located directly at Grote Markt. It is a small bar/ pub, which offers a great variety of beer. The waiters are very friendly and prices are reasonable. 

If you are up for some partying and dancing through the night, walk to Peperstraat and Poelestraat, where a lot of bars, pubs and clubs are located. The great thing is that none of the locations require entrance fees, so it’s perfect for pub crawls and bar hopping.

4th stop: Amsterdam – Welcome to the Netherland’s Venice of the North

The next stop in our one Week in … the Netherlands is Amsterdam. The capital city of the Netherlands is famous for its many bridges and canals and hence is also called Venice of the North. When travelling to Amsterdam, you should not miss a typical Grachten Tour and a walk along the canals with its historic buildings. For fans of art and history, the city offers a lot of museums, for instance the Van Gogh museum or Anne Frank House.

To be honest, one day is not enough for visiting this beautiful city. However, we hope today’s impressions and insights will inspire you to pay Amsterdam a visit!

Amsterdam by Bike

The Dutch love their bikes and even though this is a cliché, on a bicycle through Amsterdam should be part of your to do list. It is the perfect way to feel like a “real” Amsterdam native and as a pleasant side effect, you will explore the city. Get a map and follow recommended routes or just follow your nose! You will see, Amsterdam by bike is worth it and you will find out wonderful and secret areas of the city. But make sure to lock your bike properly if you make a stop somewhere (have you seen the huge locks in the city?!).

Flea market Waterloopleinmarkt

If the weather is on your side, have a walk along the flea market Waterloopleinmarkt. Here you will find nice second hand clothes, art and all kind of other stuff. If you are not in the mood for shopping, you should still try the freshly baked Stroopwafels that are being sold on the flea market. Waterloopleinmarkt is easy to reach by Metro and opens every day from 09:00 to 18:00.

Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam

To fulfill your culture desire, make a stop at the public library Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam at Oosterdokseiland. Unlike other libraries, it is very bright inside and if you are lucky you can enjoy a really good piano player in the entrance hall or just play the piano yourself.

Rose's cantina

If you want to go out for Mexican food, check out Rose’s cantina. The lovely place is located in Amsterdam’s center and with its nice interior and friendly stuff always worth a visit. Even the menu is quite limited, the homemade burritos are super delicious and the cocktails are perfect to end up your day in Amsterdam.

Don’t miss Konigsdag in April

The best time to stop by in Amsterdam is 27th of April when the Dutch celebrate Konigsdag. On this day, people in Amsterdam dress up in orange and all the streets as well as the famous Grachten will be completely covered in orange. The big street festival is held in honor of the royal family and if you are lucky you might meet the King and Queen on the street.

3rd stop: Gezelligheid en ARNHEM- A Cozy Student City

The student city Arnhem is worth a visit on the weekend or on your way to other Dutch cities. Located 20 minutes from the German boarder it is a popular weekend destination for Germans.

Bars/Restaurant

Arnhem is the ideal place to have a pub-crawl in the city center or to simply eat out in one of the many restaurants. As it is a student town, the many small bars atthe Korenmarkt and parallel streets are always crowded from Thursday onwards. Best Bars:

't Moortgat - to taste over 100 types of beers in a cute Dutch house

Cavern - for some affordable drinks in a cozy cellar

Barron - for some live music

Furthermore, if you want to have a nice dinnercheck out the Rhijnkade promenade at the Rhine River, where you can sit outside in summer. Some of our favorite restaurants and cafés are:

Amigo - yum Mexican food with cool interior

Rose’s Lounge - oriental café/restaurant 

Café Frijdag - rustic and cozy for beer or café

Shopping

The city center offers some cool shops and boutiques that you cannot find everywhere. The stores in the city are open every first Sunday of the month, in case you want to do a shopping tour instead of a lazy Sunday.

Biking

Like everywhere in the Netherlands, the best way to get around is by bike. You can rent one and have a tour at the Rhine or through the city. Have a break or picknick at the Soonsbeek park to relax and to enjoy the nature nearby the city center.

2nd stop: Renesse - Beach Time

Enough of the crowded cities? Come to visit Renesse part of the tiny island group Zeeland, belonging to the Netherlands and connected through several bridges to the rest of the Netherlands.

It is worth for a day or two to relax at the beach and enjoy the sun, sea and relaxed atmosphere. For kite surfers or wave surfers there are a couple of very good spots such asBrouwersdam.

It is particularly enjoyable in summer where you can have a refreshing bath in the sea and afterwards a cold Heineken at one of the many beach bars. What many visitors do, that are not into sports, they go for a walk and do beach bar hopping. Two of our favorite beach bars are

1st stop Maastricht - Welcome to the Netherland's beautiful south

Hello One Week In-friends, today we will start our journey through the Netherlands with Maastricht, a university city with a long history located in the south of the Netherlands close to Germany and Belgium.

Have a walk through the city center to visit Maastricht's main squares: Vrijthof with many bars and cafés, and the Market Square at the city hall with food markets on Wednesday and Friday mornings. 

In the following, we have some café and restaurant recommendations for you:

Café Zuid

This is a really pleasant place for a relaxed afternoon in the sun. Café Zuid has a huge terrace with a view on the Maas River and the park. Have a seat on one of the beach chairs and lay in the sun! The prices are medium ranged with affordable drinks and dinner for around 10-16€. It is a really nice location with delicious food.

Gadjah Mas

Gadjah Mas is an Indonesian restaurant in Maastricht, where it´s worth to eat. The restaurant is quite small but with a bit of luck you´ll get a table. The dishes are very good and affordable! You should try the Saté- it´s super delicious!

Take 5

Take 5 is a cool and hip bar in Maastricht. The location and its design is very old school that´s why its so popular among its visitors. You will have a fun night out with your friends! By the way, you can also have  lunch there, but it won´t get crowded until the evening.

One Week In ... the Netherlands

Goede Dag from the Netherlands, where we will continue our journey.

This week we decided to offer you a specialtrip through a country, which we all especially value, the Netherlands.

The country of cheese, tulips, mills andwooden shoes has a lot of beautiful cities and attractions to offer. In orderto provide you with a wide selection, we will introduce our five favorite cities.

We start our trip in Maastricht, from where we will travel to Arnhem. Afterwards we make a stop at the sea in Renesse. From where we will drive to the capital, Amsterdam, and end our trip in Groningen.

Eat, Drink & Relax on a Saturday in Munich

Today One Week In provides you with some recommmendations for a nice and relaxed Saturday in Munich. 

Café Kubitscheck

Our first recommendation is a Café close to the Theresienwiese. They offer super delicious tarts and cakes. From the train station Hackerbrücke it´s only a 10 minute walk. A perfect place to start your saturday!

Bavaria

Located only 5 minutes away from Café Kubitscheck is the famous Theresienwiese, where the Oktoberfest takes place. On this square you will find the Bavaria, an 18m high bronze statue from the 19th-century. Right behind you can find the hall of fame.You can go inside the Bavaria statue and an internal circular staircase leads up to a viewing platform in the head of the Bavaria. From there you have a nice view over Theresienwiese and Munich. Entry is only a few euros and it´s really worth it!

Café Glockenspiel

This café is directly at the Marienplatz from where you have a spectacular view over Munich. You have to take the elevator and go up to the 5th floor, where the Café is located. Have a coffee or cake and enjoy the sun on the roof terrace.

The café offers breakfast, lunch and also dinner. Try one of the traditional Bavarian veal sausages.

Maxvorstadt

This is a very hip and cool area in Munich with super nice Cafés and Boutiques where many students live. With walking distance from the city center it takes around 20 minutes, or you can catch the metro to the station Schellingstraße. For example in the Barer Straße you find cute cafés such as Barer 61 and Gegenüber. You can also observe the nostalgic architecture of the old buildings in this area and go for a walk. 

Isar

Walk a sunny saturday along the Isar river or rent a bike and do a biketour. If you don´t want to exercise too much - just take a blanket with you, some beers and enjoy the sun. (In Germany it is allowed to drink alcohol in public!) As soon as it´s warm enough, everyone in Munich meets at the Isar tp have a good time. Bring your swimweat to refresh yourself in the Isar.

A Little Party Never Killed Nobody

Fancy some Party Tonight? It’s Friday and you are probably lookingfor the perfect evening plan. Today we have three great locations in Munich tograb a few beers or dance through the night.

Café Kosmos

Café Kosmos is a great bar with awesome music. It’s very conveniently located close to the central station. For some the interior might seem a little bit shabby but they actually have some great vintage furniture. So, if you are looking for a more alternate location to grab one or more beers, Café Kosmos is the place to be.

 X-Cess

We really enjoy x-cess because it is a very special bar. It is located only 2 minutes from Stachus. It’s very small and crazy with a DJ playing all night. You can actually write and draw on the walls, which is fun especially after one or two drinks. X-cess is a great place to just dance through the night and meet crazy people.

 Harry Klein

This club is located right next to x-cess, so if you fancy a little bit more electro and techno music try Harry Klein. The club always has great DJ’s, which is probably why you have to pay an entrance fee. However, the prices are still reasonable and definitely worth it.
