Actually, in your Jack Fiddler post, the man on the left is his son, Robert. Either way, thank you for the informational post! I see very little on here about Native history and important figures, it's nice to have someone recognisable floating around.

Oh, thank you so much for the correction! I want to keep my posts as accurate as possible. I spent a lot of time researching on that subject, and it was hard to find a picture of him.

Yes, unfortunately Native history is simply ignored on here, and I want to be able to educate people on different matters, especially often misinformed rumors and the such.

If a body is removed from water, the skin of the hands can sometimes be removed like a “glove”. They can then be placed over the medical  examiner’s hand to record fingerprints.

Wendigo Psychosis

A wendigo is a forest spirit which has an incredible appetite for human flesh. They are depicted by many as very tall and skinny. Stories of them originate from Native American mythology, specifically the Inuits. Its name has many variations, but many roughly translates to “evil spirit that devours mankind.”

The means of becoming one varies. To some, the creature was previously human but changed through supernatural means. To others, a human becomes a wendigo due to being driven to cannibalism. A spirit of a wendigo may also be able to possess a human. The origin of the creature is also thought to be due to the isolation of Native Americans, which resulted in lack of food and therefor cannibalism.

Wendigo psychosis is a disorder specific to the area of its origins. The disorder itself does not hold much medical support, if at all. According to Thomas H. Hay, the disorder is similar to his accounts of ritualistic cannibalism.

Jack Fiddler was a famous wendigo hunter, and had claimed to kill many of the creatures. He was then punished for his last attempts of killing a woman who he believed to be under wendigo psychosis and needed to be murdered for the safety of everyone.

Currently, the wendigo mythology still affects us indirectly today. It has influenced the incredibly popular zombie mythology. (A used-to-be-human longing for human flesh? Sound familiar?) Others have called a wendigo an ogre, but some say the ogre came from the wendigo. Unfortunately, there are no current absolute sources as to which originated first.
