I no longer know when the war truly ends…
because for us, it is still here.
The bombing has stopped,
but our home is gone.
The place that once held our memories,
our laughter,
and the small details of our daily life
has turned into rubble—
offering no shelter from the rain,
and no protection from the pain.
Today, the rain falls on an exhausted city,
on destroyed homes,
and on families trying to start over with almost nothing.
Here, rain is not a symbol of life—
it is another harsh test of survival and patience.
The end of the war in the news
does not mean the end of its impact on our lives.
The suffering continues—
in the cold,
in the loss of safety,
and in the struggle to rebuild life from zero once again.
We are not looking for pity,
and we are not writing these words to seek sadness.
We write because we want a real chance to live with dignity.
We want to rebuild a home,
to restore a sense of safety,
and to give our family a new beginning after everything we lost.
Rebuilding life is not easy,
but it is possible when we are not left alone.
Your support today means a roof to protect us from the rain,
a wall replacing the rubble,
and hope that tomorrow can be less cruel.
My name is Abedmajed Elderawi, and I live in Gaza with what remains of my once large and loving family.
If you are able to help,
your support—no matter how small—makes a real difference in our lives.
And if you are unable to donate,
sharing this message means more than you may know.
From the heart,
thank you to everyone who has stood with us,
to everyone who supported us,
and to everyone who remembers that behind the headlines
are people simply trying to survive and rebuild their lives. 🤍

Everything changed the day Amira was born.
The world outside was collapsing — bombs, dust, screams, and fear. Yet inside a small room, by the dim light of a single candle, a new life began.
While others were running for shelter, I was holding my newborn daughter, trembling, crying, trying to believe that something so pure could still exist in a place like Gaza.
I named her Amira, because I wanted her to feel like a child of life — not a child of war.
A year has passed since that night, but nothing has really changed.
Our house is still rubble, our streets still carry the smell of smoke, and the sky still echoes with sounds that make Amira flinch in her sleep.
She has just turned one.
She’s learning to walk, holding my finger with her tiny hand, laughing at the smallest things — as if she doesn’t see the destruction around her.
She doesn’t know the word “loss.”
She never met her father, but when she smiles, I see him there.
Sometimes I watch her sleeping, and I wonder what kind of world she will grow up in — whether she will ever know what peace feels like, what home smells like.
And yet, when she opens her eyes in the morning and says “mama,” everything becomes bearable again.
I want to rebuild our home.
Not just for the walls — but for her future.
For Amira to have a small room, a safe place to dream, a life that belongs to her, not to war.
I’m not asking for much. Only for a chance to give her a beginning filled with warmth instead of fear.
🇵🇸❤️
My name is Saja. I am a mother, a wife, and just one of many women in Gaza trying to hold on — to hope, to my family, and to a life that no

To everyone reading this — thank you for listening to our story.
Your kindness means more than words.
Every share, every message, every donation — it all helps me rebuild not just a house, but a future for Amira.
From the heart of Gaza, from a mother learning to hope again —
we will live. And I will make sure my daughter grows up in a world that knows love more than war.

in which you’re chad danforth’s younger sister & you’re in love with his best friend.
read part one here
word count: 5.9k
the weeks after you and troy finally admitted your feelings felt like something out of a dream. every stolen glance in the hallways, every quiet conversation between classes, every time his fingers brushed yours - it was like your own secret world existed between you.
you weren’t officially public yet - mostly because of chad. troy had insisted that you both should wait before telling him. “he’s my best friend,” he’d said, fingers laced with yours under the table in the cafeteria. “but he’s also your brother. i just… i want to do this right.”
you’d agreed. for now, the secret was yours alone to hold - just you and troy, tucked away in late-night texts and after-practice meetups behind the gym.
it was perfect.
until she came back.
it happened on a monday morning in february. you were at your locker when you heard the familiar sound of gasps and whispers echoing down the hall.
“troy bolton! long time no see!”
that voice - confident, melodic, and unmistakably familiar - sent a ripple through the hallway. you turned just in time to see gabriella montez walking toward troy, her hair glossy and dark, a knowing smile on her face.
she had transferred out of east high months ago when her mom got a new job out of state. everyone thought that chapter was over. everyone except, apparently, gabriella.
you froze as she hugged troy, and he looked too shocked to do anything but laugh awkwardly. “gabriella? wow, i didn’t know you were coming back.”
“i wanted it to be a surprise,” she said, her voice soft, eyes shining. “senior year isn’t the same without the wildcats.”
you felt your stomach twist. she wasn’t just a wildcat - she had been his.
by lunchtime, the whole school knew she was back. sharpay was already buzzing about it with ryan at their usual table. “i knew she couldn’t stay away. honestly, how long do you think before troy and gabriella are back to singing love songs in the auditorium?”
you tried to ignore it, focusing on your tray, but the words dug into your chest like tiny barbs.
troy sat beside you, nudging your shoulder gently. “hey. you okay?”
“yeah,” you said quickly, forcing a smile. “just… surprised to see her.”
he nodded, his voice low. “yeah, me too. but you don’t have to worry, okay? that was a long time ago.”
you believed him. you wanted to believe him. but when gabriella showed up to basketball practice that afternoon - leaning against the wall, laughing at something he said - it was hard not to feel like you were watching history try to repeat itself.
***
a few days later, things took a turn.
you were sitting in the cafeteria when chad slid into the seat across from you, his tray clattering loudly. “okay,” he said, leaning forward. “i’m only gonna ask this once. are you and troy… a thing?”
your heart nearly stopped. “what?”
“don’t play dumb,” chad said, his expression serious. “you two have been sneaking around after practice, and troy’s been acting weird. and before you say anything, zeke saw you guys leaving the smoothie shop the other week “holding hands.”
you wanted the floor to open up and swallow you whole.
“chad, please don’t freak out-”
“don’t freak out?” he interrupted, his voice rising. “you’re my sister! he’s my best friend! you think i wouldn’t freak out about this?”
you glanced around, lowering your voice. “keep it down, please.”
chad exhaled sharply, shaking his head. “does troy even know i know?”
you swallowed hard. “no. not yet.”
he looked away, jaw tightening. “unbelievable. i trusted him. you both should’ve told me.”
before you could respond, you heard someone call your name - troy, making his way over.
“hey,” he said, smiling, completely unaware of the tension radiating from the table. “what’s going on?”
chad stood, crossing his arms. “what’s going on? why don’t you tell me, troy?”
troy blinked, confused. “what are you talking about?”
“you and my sister,” Chad snapped. “don’t play dumb.”
the colour drained from troy’s face. “chad, i was going to tell you-”
“when?” chad cut him off. “after you broke her heart? after you decided it wasn’t worth the risk?”
“hey!” you said sharply, standing. “don’t talk to him like that. this isn’t just about him - it’s about me too.”
the three of you stood there, the cafeteria buzzing around you. for a moment, no one spoke. then chad muttered, “you guys made a huge mistake,” and stormed off.
***
later that night, you found troy sitting on the bleachers, staring at the empty court.
“chad won’t even talk to me,” he said quietly when you approached. “i knew this would mess things up.”
you sat beside him, your hand brushing his. “we’ll figure it out. he just needs time.”
troy nodded slowly, his eyes distant. “yeah. i just hate that it’s all falling apart at once.” he hesitated, then looked at you. “and with gabriella back… it’s making everything more complicated.”
your stomach tightened. “what do you mean?”
“she wants to do the spring musical again. sharpay told me today. she keeps talking about ‘the good old days,’” he said, frustration in his voice. “but i don’t want that. i want… this. us.”
you met his gaze, your chest aching with equal parts love and fear. “then prove it.”
***
the next day, the drama club posted the cast list for the new musical - and your name wasn’t on it.
but gabriella’s was. starring opposite troy.
you stared at the sheet in disbelief, sharpay smirking from a few feet away. “looks like the wildcats are getting a reunion.”
troy approached you later, guilt written all over his face. “i swear, i didn’t ask for this,” he said. “ms. darbus picked the parts before i even auditioned.”
you forced a smile. “it’s fine.”
“it’s not fine,” he said, his voice low and sincere. “you mean more to me than some stupid musical. i’ll talk to darbus if you want-“
“don’t,” you interrupted. “i don’t want to be the reason you give something up.”
he hesitated, looking at you like he wanted to say more - but gabriella called his name from across the room. you both froze as she waved, her expression bright and familiar.
he smiled awkwardly, then turned back to you. “i’ll make it up to you. i promise.”
you nodded, but as you watched him walk away to join her, your chest ached with the familiar fear that maybe this time, love wouldn’t be enough.
***
the following week at east high felt… off.
you still saw troy every day - in the halls, after practice, during study sessions at your house - but things weren’t the same. not after gabriella’s return. not after found out.
he hadn’t spoken to either of you since that day in the cafeteria. every time you tried to approach him, he either changed direction or muttered something about “not having time.” it stung more than you wanted to admit.
you knew chad was angry because he cared - but part of you couldn’t shake the thought that maybe he was right. maybe you had messed everything up.
and then there was gabriella.
she was everywhere. in the hallways, at lunch, at basketball games - always beside troy, laughing, reminiscing, falling back into old rhythms that were just too easy for them.
you told yourself you weren’t jealous. you trusted troy. but when you saw them together - when you caught her adjusting his collar before rehearsal or laughing at something he whispered - that old ache in your chest came crawling back.
“okay, wildcats!” ms. darbus clapped dramatically in the auditorium. “we open in three weeks! let’s run the act two duet one more time!”
you were sitting in the back row, watching. you hadn’t auditioned, but you’d agreed to help with stage crew - a small way to support troy without being in the spotlight.
as the music started, gabriella’s voice filled the room - soft, clear, heartbreakingly familiar. and then troy’s joined hers, low and rich, their voices blending like they always used to.
you swallowed hard, trying to focus on your clipboard, but your eyes betrayed you. he was smiling at her. she was smiling back.
when the song ended, everyone clapped. ms. darbus looked thrilled. “brava! bravo! you two have such undeniable chemistry,” she said, beaming. “it’s as if no time has passed at all.”
gabriella laughed modestly. “it’s nice to sing with troy again.”
you looked away before anyone saw the flicker of hurt on your face.
later that day, you found yourself sitting on the bleachers after practice. the gym was empty except for troy, who was tossing a basketball from hand to hand, lost in thought.
“you were amazing today,” you said quietly as you approached.
he looked up, smiling softly. “thanks. though i think darbus is gonna make us sing that song a hundred more times before she’s satisfied.”
you chuckled, but the sound was weak. “you and gabriella sounded… really good together.”
troy hesitated, reading your tone. “hey,” he said, tossing the ball aside and walking over. “you know that’s just the musical, right? that doesn’t mean anything.”
you forced a smile, but it didn’t reach your eyes. “i know.”
he sighed, stepping closer. “no, you don’t. you think you do, but i can see it on your face. you’re overthinking everything.”
“maybe i am,” you said, crossing your arms. “but it’s hard not to when the entire school keeps talking about how ‘troy and gabriella are back.’”
troy ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. “people are always gonna talk. but i don’t care about that. i care about you.”
you wanted to believe him. you really did. but before you could answer, the gym doors slammed open.
chad.
he looked furious, his wildcats’s jacket hanging half-off his shoulder. “good. you’re both here. saves me a trip.”
“chad-” troy started, but your brother cut him off.
“don’t,” he said sharply. “you knew how i felt about this, man. about you and my sister. and you went behind my back anyway.”
troy’s voice softened. “i didn’t mean for it to happen that way.”
“oh, i’m sure you didn’t,” chad shot back. “you just ‘accidentally’ fell for her? while i was too busy trusting you?”
“stop it,” you said, stepping between them. “this isn’t just on him. i’m part of this too, chad. i care about him.”
chad turned to you, disbelief in his eyes. “you really think he’s gonna choose you over all this?” he gestured toward the stage banners hanging on the gym walls - reminders of troy’s perfect east high legacy. “you think this lasts when gabriella’s around?”
that one hit harder than you wanted it to.
troy stepped forward, voice firm. “don’t talk to her like that. i love her, chad.”
the words hung in the air like lightning. you froze. chad froze. even troy seemed a little stunned at himself.
“you what?” chad asked quietly, his anger dimming for the first time.
troy met his gaze. “i love her. and i’m not gonna hide it anymore.”
for a moment, no one spoke. then chad let out a long, weary breath, shaking his head. “man… this is gonna mess up everything.” he turned and walked out, leaving the gym echoing with silence.
***
that night, troy showed up at your window.
you opened it before he could even knock. “you really didn’t have to climb the tree, you know.”
he grinned faintly. “yeah, but it’s kind of our thing now.”
you rolled your eyes, stepping aside to let him in. he sat on the edge of your bed, running a hand through his hair. “i didn’t mean to say that in front of chad like that. but i meant it. every word.”
your heart skipped. “you did?”
he looked at you like there was no one else in the world. “yeah. i know things are messy right now - with chad, with gabriella, with everything. but i don’t care. i just want us.”
you sat beside him, your hand finding his. “then we’ll figure it out. together.”
he smiled softly, leaning in until your foreheads touched. “together.”
but outside your window, the world kept spinning — and rumors kept spreading. by monday, everyone at east high knew about you and troy.
sharpay was already stirring drama (“i knew he couldn’t stay away from the bolton charm, but i didn’t think he’d go there.”), while gabriella tried to act supportive - but there was a quiet sadness in her eyes every time she saw the two of you together.
chad was distant but calmer now, keeping to himself during practice.
and yet… something in the air felt off. you couldn’t shake the feeling that the story wasn’t over. that gabriella’s return - and the spotlight she shared with troy - was only the beginning of the storm.
because secrets, even the honest ones, had a way of coming back.
and at east high, nothing stayed private for long.
***
the next few weeks moved fast.
the musical was almost ready to open, and east high was buzzing with excitement. posters lined the hallways, rehearsals ran late, and even the wildcats were helping backstage when they weren’t on the court.
but underneath all that energy, everything between you, troy, gabriella, and chad sat like a fault line - ready to crack.
you and troy were together, officially. everyone knew. you’d stopped trying to hide it, even if it meant dealing with stares, whispers, and the occasional smirk from sharpay.
but gabriella… she’d grown quiet. the usual spark in her eyes dimmed whenever troy walked into the room with you. she smiled when she saw you, but it never reached her eyes. and troy, for all his effort to stay focused, was clearly carrying guilt for how things had unfolded.
you wanted to hate her - but you couldn’t. she wasn’t doing anything wrong. she was just… there. and maybe, in a small way, she was still in love with him too.
***
opening night arrived.
the auditorium was packed - students, parents, teachers, and a crowd of wildcats in their red and white gear.
you stood backstage, clipboard in hand, helping with lighting cues. gabriella was already in costume, her voice carrying through the air as she sang her first solo. troy stood behind the curtain, waiting for his cue.
you could feel his nerves from across the room. he turned, caught your eye, and gave you that small, grounding smile that always made everything else fade away.
“you’ve got this,” you mouthed.
he nodded - and then, he was gone, walking into the spotlight.
their duet began softly, just like the rehearsals you’d sat through so many times. but this time… something was different. the emotion in their voices was real - raw, unfiltered, honest.
it wasn’t about romance, not anymore. it was about letting go. about endings and beginnings.
as they sang, you saw it - the closure they both needed, playing out through lyrics and music. gabriella looked at him like she was saying goodbye, and troy looked at her like he understood.
and for the first time, you didn’t feel jealous. you just felt peace.
after the final curtain call, the crowd erupted into cheers. the cast took their bows, and ms. darbus looked like she might cry from pride. you watched from the side, clapping with everyone else.
when it was over, gabriella found you backstage.
“hey,” she said quietly. “you were amazing back there - organising everything.”
you smiled. “thanks. you were incredible tonight.”
she hesitated for a moment before nodding. “listen… i just wanted to say i’m sorry. for everything. i didn’t mean to make things awkward.”
you shook your head. “you didn’t. it’s been hard for everyone, but… it worked out the way it needed to.”
she gave a small, sad smile. “yeah. i think it did.”
and then she glanced over your shoulder, where troy stood waiting for you, a soft look in his eyes. “he really loves you, you know.”
your throat tightened. “i know.”
gabriella nodded, then stepped forward and hugged you. “take care of him, okay?”
you hugged her back, whispering, “i will.”
when she pulled away, she looked lighter, freer - like she’d finally closed that chapter of her life.
troy walked over once she left, slipping his hand into yours. “what did she say?”
you smiled. “goodbye, i think.”
he nodded, exhaling. “yeah. maybe it’s time for all of us to move on.”
you leaned your head against his shoulder. “we already have.”
he kissed your forehead gently. “you know, when we started this, i didn’t think we’d make it through all of this drama.”
you laughed softly. “we’re wildcats. we always pull through.”
***
the next week, things slowly started to heal.
gabriella focused on finishing her senior projects. sharpay, surprisingly, turned her attention to a summer theatre program in new york. ryan and kelsi started working on new music together, and zeke finally got sharpay to agree to one of his famous muffins.
and chad… well, he came around too. one afternoon after practice, he found you sitting on the bleachers, scrolling through your phone.
“hey,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
you looked up, surprised but smiling. “hey.”
he hesitated. “so… i’ve been thinking.”
“that’s dangerous,” you teased, and he rolled his eyes.
“i was wrong,” he said simply. “i shouldn’t have come at you and troy like that. i just… didn’t know how to handle it. you’re my sister, and he’s my best friend. i felt like i was losing both of you.”
you softened. “you didn’t lose us, chad. you just had to share us.”
he chuckled, shaking his head. “guess i did. anyway, i’m sorry.”
you stood and hugged him. “i forgive you.”
he hugged you back tightly. “you better not break his heart.”
you grinned. “pretty sure it’s safe with me.”
from across the gym, troy called out, “you two done with your emotional reunion, or do i have to get popcorn?”
chad groaned. “see? still annoying.”
but the grin on his face said everything was finally okay.
***
a few weeks later, as graduation loomed closer, you stood outside east high, looking out at the sunset over the basketball court. troy joined you, slipping an arm around your shoulders.
“remember when this all started?” he asked.
you laughed. “you mean when i could barely talk to you without blushing?”
he smiled, leaning closer. “yeah. that was kind of cute.”
you nudged him with your shoulder. “you’re lucky i didn’t give up on you.”
“lucky?” he smiled, his eyes warm. “no. i’m the luckiest guy in the world.”
you smiled, resting your head against his chest as the sun dipped lower behind the wildcats’ banner.
everything you’d gone through - the years of quiet love, the heartbreak, the secrets, the fear - it had all led here.
and for the first time, there were no what-ifs. no maybes.
in which you’re chad danforth’s younger sister & you’re in love with his best friend.
word count: 2.9k
content warning: nothing tbh??
troy bolton had been a constant presence in your life for as long as you could remember. he and chad had been best friends since childhood, and you had watched them grow up together, laughed at their inside jokes, and cheered them on at every game. but it was troy’s kindness, his passion for the game, his love for his friends, and that quiet intensity in his eyes that had drawn you in, long before you ever realised you were in love with him.
you were close enough in age that you shared some classes together, but the more time you spent around troy, the more you realised that he was always there - whether it was picking you up from school or waiting with chad after practice for you to finish your homework. he treated you like family, but it was always that lingering feeling, that heartbeat in your chest, that reminded you it was something more.
there was that one moment you would never forget. it was the day after the big game where the wildcat’s had won the regional championship. troy was walking with your brother to the locker room when he noticed you sitting by the bleachers, lost in thought. he smiled, that warm, sincere smile of his, and walked over.
"hey, you okay?" he asked, sitting beside you. his presence was enough to calm the storm that had been raging in your chest for days.
all you could do was nod, trying to force a smile. "yeah, just... thinking."
troy raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying it. "you know you can talk to me, right?" he said gently, his voice soft and comforting.
the words were on the tip of your tongue. i’m in love with you, troy bolton. i’ve been in love with you for as long as i can remember. but you couldn’t say them. not to him. not to anyone.
you’d always kept it to yourself. who would believe you? who would understand that the boy you’d practically grown up with was more than just your brother's best friend? but it wasn’t something that was easy to hide. the way troy’s smile lit up a room, the way his laugh could make everything feel lighter - how could anyone not fall for him?
it all started when you were young. you would watch him from the sidelines during basketball games, feeling a rush of pride when he scored, your heart swelling with a love you couldn’t define. over the years, you’d developed a secret routine: pretending to just be “chad’s little sister” when all you wanted was to be someone troy noticed for more than just being in his orbit.
***
chad had decided to host one of his legendary pool parties at your house. laughter rang out as people told stories around the fire pit, and you found yourself sitting at the edge of the group, gazing at troy without meaning to. he was talking to chad, but every now and then, he would catch your eye. a playful smile would cross his face, and for a fleeting moment, you dared to believe that maybe, just maybe, he saw you differently too.
your brother, ever the protector, leaned over and nudged you with his elbow. “stop staring at him, sis. you’re gonna make him think you’re a weirdo. that’s if he doesn’t already think that.” you rolled your eyes but didn’t respond. what could you say? the truth was too impossible to admit.
the night grew late, and people began to filter inside the house. you stood up, ready to go in and call it a night when troy stopped you.
“hey,” he said, his voice warm as always. “you coming inside?”
“yeah, just… needed some fresh air,” you stammered, feeling the familiar nerves bubbling in your chest.
troy stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “you know, i’ve always thought you were cooler than chad gives you credit for,” he said with a smirk. “you’re not just his annoying little sister.”
your heart skipped a beat. what the hell is happening right now? you thought. “thanks,” you whispered, not trusting your voice to carry more than that.
he smiled, that same smile that had haunted your dreams for years. “you should come hang out with us more. i know you’re always kind of in the background, but you’re more fun than you think.”
“yeah, maybe,” you said, trying to play it cool, but your pulse was racing. the idea that troy bolton, the one person you’d adored secretly for so long, thought of you as fun made your head spin. maybe he didn’t know what you felt for him, but this small shift felt like a crack in the door, a potential glimpse of something more.
“i mean it,” he said, his voice more sincere now. “you’ve got a lot more to offer than just being chad’s sister.”
the words hung between you, both of you standing there, not knowing what to say next. you wanted to tell him everything, wanted to tell him that you’d been in love with him for as long as you could remember. but you were scared - scared of ruining the friendship, scared of being rejected.
troy seemed to sense your hesitation and offered a reassuring smile. “anyway, just think about it. you’re always welcome to hang with us.”
“thanks,” you said, barely able to hold back the emotions threatening to spill over. “i’ll… i’ll think about it.”
as you turned to walk inside, you couldn’t help but smile to yourself. maybe, just maybe, troy had started to see you—not as chad’s little sister, but as someone else entirely. and that was a start.
maybe the love you’d kept locked away in your heart for so long didn’t have to remain a secret after all.

the next few days felt like an eternity. after that conversation by the fire, you couldn’t stop thinking about it. troy had always been kind to you, but this—this felt different. it wasn’t just the casual words of friendship. there was something in his tone, something in the way he looked at you that made your heart race. you replayed that moment in your mind over and over, wishing you could somehow decipher what it all meant.
but troy wasn’t one to be obvious with his feelings. he kept his distance, acting like everything was normal, like nothing had shifted between you two. he hung out with chad, joked around, and played basketball as usual. but every time you saw him, you couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed.
it wasn’t until a week later that you got a chance to talk to him again. chad had dragged you out to one of their practice sessions, claiming he needed a “cheerleader” and that you were the closest thing to one. you’d only half-heartedly agreed, but when you arrived, you found yourself leaning against the bleachers, quietly watching troy as he practiced with his team. the way he moved, his natural leadership on the court - it was hard not to admire him.
after a while, the team wrapped up, and troy jogged over to where you were sitting, wiping sweat off his brow.
“hey, you actually showed up,” he teased, his smile making you feel like you’d just been hit by a wave of warmth.
“i never said i wouldn’t,” you shot back, trying to act casual even though your heart was beating louder than the basketballs bouncing on the court.
troy chuckled and sat down beside you, resting his arm on the back of the bleacher. “i guess i owe you a drink for coming all the way out here to watch me get sweaty.” he grinned, a playful glint in his eyes.
you rolled your eyes, trying to keep your composure. “i didn’t come for that,” you said, but the corner of your lips lifted into a smile.
“sure, sure,” troy teased. “well, how about we grab a smoothie after this? my treat.”
you hesitated, it wasn’t like you didn’t want to hang out with him - alone, but you didn’t know if you were ready for that yet. you’d dreamed of this moment for so long, but now that it was here, you felt like a deer caught in headlights.
“i don’t know,” you said, glancing over at the basketball court. “i’m not sure i should hang out with you without chad around. you know how he is.”
troy raised an eyebrow. “what, does he get jealous or something?”
you laughed nervously, rubbing the back of your neck. “well, he’s... protective. you know how it is.”
troy’s expression softened, and for a moment, it seemed like he was considering something. “you don’t have to worry about him. i’ll make sure he doesn’t find out. i mean, unless you want him to. i wouldn’t want to cause any family drama.”
you didn’t know how to answer that. the idea of spending time with troy alone, without chad hovering over you, felt like a dream - and a terrifying one. but what if this was your chance? what if he actually wanted to get to know you better, beyond being chad’s sister?
before you could come up with a response, troy nudged you gently with his elbow. “come on. i promise it'll just be a quick smoothie. no big deal.”
there was something in his voice that made you believe him—something in the way he looked at you, making you feel like the world had narrowed down to just the two of you. you felt a rush of courage.
“okay,” you said, your voice barely above a whisper. “but just one. and if chad finds out, you’re explaining it to him.”
troy laughed, a sound that sent a flutter through your chest. “deal.”
an hour later, you and troy found yourselves sitting at a corner booth at the local smoothie place. the conversation was easy, flowing naturally between the two of you. you laughed more than you had in a long time, enjoying the time together. but even in the midst of all the casual talk, there was an undeniable tension - something unspoken hanging in the air.
as you finished your smoothies, troy leaned back in his seat, eyes locking onto yours. “you know, i’ve always liked hanging out with you,” he said, his voice a little quieter now. “it’s just… you’re always so quiet when we’re all together. but you’re fun to talk to, you know?”
you swallowed hard, your heart racing again. “thanks,” you managed to say, feeling a little flustered. "i guess i just don’t really know where i fit in with you guys."
troy’s eyes softened, and he leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. “you don’t have to be just ‘chad’s sister,’ you know. you’re your own person. i can see that. i think… i think i’ve always noticed you, even when you didn’t think i did.”
your heart skipped a beat. had he really just said that?
you opened your mouth to respond, but no words came out. you stared at him, your feelings threatening to spill over.
troy, sensing your hesitation, smiled gently. “it’s okay. you don’t have to say anything. i just wanted you to know that i see you, and i… i’ve always liked hanging out with you. just, you know, as you.”
that was all it took. the walls you’d built around your heart - those walls you’d kept up for years to protect yourself from the unspoken love you’d carried for troy - came crashing down in an instant. you finally understood what he was saying. maybe he didn’t feel the same way you did, not yet, but he saw you. really saw you.
and maybe, just maybe, that was all you needed.
“i’ve always liked hanging out with you too,” you whispered, meeting his gaze. “more than you know.”
troy smiled again, a small, knowing smile, as if he understood exactly what you meant. and for the first time in years, you allowed yourself to hope.
maybe this wasn’t just a friendship anymore. maybe this was the beginning of something more.
and maybe, after all this time, your secret love wasn’t so secret anymore.

the days after your smoothie date with troy felt like they were in slow motion. you couldn’t help but replay everything in your mind - his smile, the way his voice softened when he spoke to you, the way he seemed to see you in a way no one else ever had. the tension between you two had been undeniable, and yet, it didn’t feel awkward or forced. it felt… right, in a way that made your heart flutter every time you thought about it.
but of course, you didn’t want to rush anything. troy hadn’t exactly confessed his feelings, and you weren’t about to push him into something he wasn’t ready for. still, every time you saw him - whether at school, hanging out with chad, or at another one of their basketball practices - you couldn’t ignore the way your heart skipped whenever his eyes met yours.
and then one afternoon, after school, things changed again. it had been a week since the smoothie date, and you were at home, trying to get some homework done, when you heard a knock at the door.
you opened it to find troy standing there, looking a little sheepish, his hands shoved in his pockets.
“hey,” he said, his voice a little quieter than usual. “got a minute?”
your heart skipped in your chest, the weight of his sudden visit making you nervous and excited all at once. “uh, yeah, sure. come in.”
troy stepped inside, and you led him to the living room, where you both sat down on the couch. the silence between you was comfortable, but there was a tension in the air that made it feel heavier than usual. troy shifted slightly, glancing at you with a nervous smile.
“i wanted to talk to you about something,” he said, his tone uncertain, but there was something in his eyes that made you feel like this was important. “i’ve been thinking a lot about… everything. about us.”
your pulse quickened. your throat went dry, but you forced yourself to speak. “what do you mean? about us?”
troy sighed, running a hand through his hair, looking a little lost for words. “i don’t know. i just… i think you’ve been trying to hide something from me. and i’ve been stupid for not seeing it sooner.”
you blinked in confusion. hide something? was he talking about your feelings? you hadn’t thought you’d made it that obvious.
troy met your eyes again, his expression soft but serious. “i don’t want to keep pretending like i don’t know. i’ve noticed the way you look at me, the way you act around me. and it’s… it’s been hard to ignore.” he paused, as if searching for the right words. “i guess what i’m trying to say is… i think i’ve been hiding something from you too.”
your heart thudded in your chest. you hadn’t expected this. not like this. “what do you mean?” you asked, your voice barely a whisper.
troy took a deep breath, leaning forward slightly. “i’m not sure when it happened, but over time, i started to realise that… i don’t just think of you as chad’s sister anymore. i’ve started to see you as more than that. and i can’t stop thinking about you.”
your eyes widened as his words hit you like a wave. he felt the same way?
before you could say anything, troy rushed on. “i didn’t know if you felt the same, or if it was just some weird thing in my head, but i needed to know. because… i like you. a lot. and i’ve been too scared to tell you, but i can’t keep pretending like i don’t care about you.”
you could hardly believe what you were hearing. for all this time, you’d hidden your feelings - your love for him - thinking it was something you would never be able to say. and here he was, confessing that he felt the same.
the silence between you stretched for a moment before you found your voice, barely able to contain the overwhelming emotions surging through you.
“i… i’ve been in love with you for so long,” you admitted, your voice trembling slightly. “i just never thought you’d see me the way i see you.”
troy’s expression softened, and a small, shy smile tugged at the corners of his lips. “i’ve always seen you, even if i didn’t realise it. i just didn’t want to mess things up, you know? with chad, with our friendship. but now, i don’t want to hide this anymore.”
without thinking, you moved closer to him, the space between you vanishing as your heart raced faster than ever. “so… what does this mean? are we…?”
troy’s smile grew, and for the first time in forever, you saw the same vulnerability in his eyes that you’d felt every time you’d looked at him. he reached out, taking your hand gently in his. “it means that i’m not just troy bolton, chad’s best friend. it means that i’m… me - and i want to see where this goes. if you’re willing to take the chance with me.”
for a moment, everything felt suspended in time. the world outside, the worries, the uncertainties - they all faded away as you looked at him. you hadn’t imagined this moment would come like this, and yet, here it was. he was offering you exactly what you’d wanted for so long.
you nodded, your throat tight with emotion. “i want that too. i’ve always wanted that.”
troy’s smile brightened, and without another word, he pulled you into a gentle embrace. the moment his arms wrapped around you, you felt a rush of relief, of joy, of everything falling into place. you’d always dreamed of this - being with him, not as chad’s little sister, but as someone who mattered to him, in a way that was all your own.
as you pulled back, he looked at you with a tenderness you’d never seen before. “i’m glad we’re on the same page.”
you grinned, your heart soaring. “me too.”
and in that moment, you realised that the love you’d kept hidden for so long was no longer a secret. it was real. and this time, you didn’t have to hide it anymore.
