Yes on the road in 1972
photos from the “Progeny” box set
Dark - Round the Edges (orig 1972, this re 2013 Machu Picchu Records)
Nabbed this at my local brick & mortar store! A killer of course.....just need Mirkwood & The Contents Are - Through You and my Machu Picchu reissue collection is complete...
Burnt Suite - s/t (orig 1972, this re. 2016 Void Records)
Druggy all-night rural rock barn jammer! First legit reissue & the latest Void Records release! Best tracks to my ears are “Coming to an End” and “Lightning”
Nice Gibson SG/Fender Pro Reverb tones as well.
More Stone Harbour....
Rick Ballas (left) & Dave McCarty (right)
Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti - The Doldrums (orig. 2004, this re. Paw Tracks 2011)
Probably my favorite record of his lo-fi period. “Among Dreams” is sublime.
Rush - The Way It Is (1975)
Nice private press by a club band from Maine recorded in December of 1974. You can listen to it on the band’s Reverbnation (http://www.reverbnation.com/rushmaine) and here’s a track from my YouTube:
Captain Beyond s/t 1972 1st press
With the original lenticular print. Was stoked to find this at my local record shop.
Stone Harbour - Emerges (orig. 1974, this reissue Void 2005)
Fine dreamy lo-fi psych rock with spacey keyboards and a vibe that is something that really can’t be described in words. Glad I held off on getting one because they go for 50-60$ on Discogs but I got it for 11.50$ from band member Rick Ballas on eBay. Score.
Latest pickup! Iron Lung - High Bail (orig. released 1975, this reissue 1994 Casket Records)
my review:
Druggy teenage garage blues, on par with Raven's "Back To Ohio Blues." Lyrics about boozing, needles, and getting locked up which would make you think these guys were a bit older if you didn't see the cover first.
"High Bail" the song reminds me a bit of the Band (!?) and there's the C.T.S. Express female background singers adding a lot to that and a few other tracks. That's a standout, as well as "Because of You" and "Nobody Cares" which feature some good riffs and blues solos with clean tones. The big influence seems to be Youlden-era Savoy Brown, and the lead singer (presumably Bill Boltz) sounds like he's giving it his all. There's that bluesy Southern drawl, which works most of the time, except on the more ballad-y numbers, such as "The Thrill Is Over," but I still dig the guitar melody and playing. The rhythm section is frenzied a-la Ten Years After, which could have been another influence. This album is not psych or hard rock for damn sure, however it is well worth investigating for a bluesy, fun, doped-up listen (and I hope they were more than half as high as they acted like!)
Smokin’ Willie - s/t (orig. 1972, this re. OR 1995)
Indiana power trio with bandleader Bill “Smokin’ Willie” Frey doubling up on guitar and organ. Only one original here, but no matter as the cover songs feature raw, primitive, extended fuzz solos and slaughtering arrangements. The garage/gymnasium low-fi sound works in it’s favor, and I’m sure these guys loved their downers and booze.
Pictures of Lemmy : - Hawkwind (1971-75)
RIP Lemmy
Phantasia (World In Sound 2013) recorded 1971
Mirrors - Something That Would Never Do (Violet Times/Hovercraft 2009)
Recorded 1974-1975. If you haven’t heard they are a must if you like Velvetsy-Stoogey protopunk goodness. LP arrived funnily enough on Jamie Kilmek’s birthday. Rawk on!
Titus Oates - Jungle Lady (1974)
