Oooooooh it's Des Moines Arts Festival time!! #DMAF20 #gowhereittakesyou #dsmusa (at Western Gateway Park)
Sweet summer nights in The Moines (at Principal Park)
Sunset from the Jackson St Bridge
I know there's a cool new place to get coffee on the next corner, but it'll never hold the charm of @javajoescoffeehousedsm
Stormy in the city
Are we still calling this the Jackson St Bridge?? Regardless, it's good to have it rehabbed and open again.
All theater all weekend. One of these I totally, completely loved, and the other one had really pretty singing. Mike Draper's homegrown #NoCoastPlay runs next weekend too! @scottsiepker is so terrific.
You know it's Oscars season when this is the scene at the Fleur. Pandemonium, baby. (at The Fleur Cinema & Cafe)
Inauguration Day calls for an 11 percenter. Cheers from Des Moines' newest taproom! (at Peace Tree Brewing - Des Moines Branch)
Finally made it to @nocejazz for an evening of drinks and jazz. I don't know what took me so long. Most relaxing evening out in a long time. ❤️🎺🎹🎸 (at Noce)
I am so ready for the downtown grocery store to open! Or, if I become a bag lady in 2017, then I'm ready for that too.
Wednesday Cheese Fondue Night at The Cheese Shop
Outing with friends at The Cheese Shop (42nd St) started innocently enough with fondue and a bottle of Von Winning Sauvignon Blanc, and progressed to burrata toast... and a cheese/charcuterie board... before falling into complete gluttony with a chocolate sampler dessert. Fondue Night is every Wednesday at the Cheese Shop -- space is tight, so get there early!
This decked-out bus made my ❤️ happy this morning! (at Des Moines, Iowa)
Goldfinch finally open. Yes.
11-16-16
Court Avenue’s newest restaurant, Goldfinch, just opened in the space once occupied by Dos Rios. It seemed like a looooong time coming, but the wait is finally over. Goldfinch follows the trend that’s so en vogue--clean and sophisticated, but not pretentious. The menu includes many locally sourced options, and it’s nice to have some fresh and healthy choices. We kept our dinner simple, with a chopped cobb salad and a veggie burger. In retrospect, we should have ordered the tableside guac, a carryover from Dos Rios days.
They have a nice cocktail and wine menu. Most of the time we’re beer people (including this time, shocker.) so we went with Topling Goliath Dorothy and Odell Cutthroat Porter, two of the six selections currently on tap.
Service was terrific and friendly. We didn’t need reservations on a Wednesday night, but weekends will be a different story. (They’re on OpenTable.) Prices are moderate -- salads and sandwiches in the $10-15 ballpark; dinner entrees $16-29.
All in all, Goldfinch seems to be a great addition to Court Avenue, and I think people will see it as a unique option. (We didn’t need another restaurant with fried bar food.) Goldfinch will keep the same patio space that Dos Rios had, and the new outside furniture is already in place. (Only five months, people!)

Marley thought we should go for a walk around @iowacubs Principal Park today. We didn't do it before games 1 & 3, and look what happened.
Vivian’s Diner + Drinks
Oct 13, 2016
We made it this week to Vivian’s, which opened in August. It’s in the former Gramercy Tap location, in Hotel Kirkwood, right next to Wasabi Tao. That’s probably why we hadn’t tried it until now -- Wasabi is our favorite sushi place, so the few times we’ve considered Vivian’s, we’d get to the door, and then the sushi across the foyer would magnetically draw us in.
Not this time. We were resolute!
We went with another couple and cozied into a booth, where we could properly take it all in. The place has a great atmosphere. Its design is just enough “diner” to be called so, but classed up from there. The lighting, materials, and fixtures are trendy without trying too hard. It seems to walk a fine line between casual and classy (but then, isn’t that what all of us are trying to do, really?).
The service was terrific and the menu interesting -- offering classics like burgers, meatloaf, and mac & cheese, but then jazzing them up. I don’t know about you, but the meatloaf I grew up with didn’t come with a red wine balsamic reduction. (COME ON, MOM. It’s like you weren’t even trying.)
Many of the menu options include meat, but I found a few vegetarian choices and settled on a quinoa salad that was delicious. The jalapeño vinaigrette was subtle but quite good. Everyone else at the table seemed to enjoy their meatier dinners.
One last thing -- something you may not notice, depending on where you sit, is the set of stairs leading up to a small, comfortable lounge area that overlooks the restaurant (where my photos were taken from). This is a great out-of-the-way place to grab a pre-dinner drink and relax. It can be reserved for private groups as well.
We enjoyed the meal and the evening, and it was slow enough on a Wednesday night that we could chat for a minute with owner Jeff Duncan about the restaurant (and his daughter, Vivian). If her namesake restaurant is any indication, Vivian must be a classy little gal.
