My apologies for my absence - my uncles came into town on Wednesday, and I’ve had work and con this weekend (and the fun event of a panic attack yesterday which kind of, uh, made doing things really hard. ^^) - I still have the starters in mind and will likely do them Monday.
Ok - found a translation for the first chapter of Wraith Arc, and Mami says something that I think makes sense in my last tags: “Magical girls’ strength aren’t just about individual potential or skill. When we fight wraiths, the most important things we must have are the strength of will and heart.”
Even when she’s in despair and the strength of her heart is faulting (kill everyone and near the end of TDS (in regards to the fight with Kyouko)), Mami’s strength of will never fails. She picks what she sees as the best resolution to the potential problem, and she carries it through (or tries to do so).
I also think it’s interesting that both The Different Story and the Oriko timeline make a point of saving Mami from the whole hey, let’s kill everyone now that we know the truth (although I will point out that this doesn’t completely succeed in TDS, but that’s only because - well, TDS turns completely on her relationship with Kyouko and she’s partly to blame for what happens, so I think that’s more of a guilt and reunite with Kyouko like promised than her reasoning in ep, 10 and earlier in TDS).
Ok - what I kept myself from rambling in the tags is this:
In the very first timeline, Mami mentions wanting Madoka to be fully trained to fight Walpurgisnacht, and in the second timeline, she correctly identifies Homura’s magic as time magic, along with stating, “It’s incredible, but it’s tricky to learn how to fight with it.”
This leads me to two theories:
1) Mami’s witch and magic analysis has led her to be able to both accurately identify when and where a Walpurgisnact will show up based on local criteria (which doesn’t seem outside of her bounds, considering how quickly she is able to track and locate witches, not just using her soul gem but also through a general idea of where witches might be most attracted (as seen in ep. 2)) and know another magical girl’s magic through one use (again, not outside her bounds, given her identification of not just Kyouko’s magical ability but also the magical ability of the witch Kyouko was fighting when they met in The Different Story). This theory relies a lot on Mami’s previous experiences and intellect, which, given my previous headcanon that she’s been doing this for two years, the above notations that these are not outside her bounds, and that Mami is the sort of person who teaches and studies until she is able to do what she wants (creating muskets out of ribbons, making tea just appear out of nowhere, teaching herself healing powers (as seen in ep. one with Kyubey) even though all of the above is outside of her initial magical powerset), it isn’t too far out of bounds.
2) Oriko and Kirika, considered an anomaly in the Oriko timeline, were not in of themselves the anomalies. It is possible that Mami knows - or has been in touch with - both magical girls prior to the first timeline. Oriko could easily have seen Walpurgisnact and worked to get magical girls to defeat it (not likely, given that we only see Mami and Madoka fighting the witch at the end of the first timeline), and Kirika’s time magic would give Mami a base knowledge to work off of in regards to Homura’s magic. The anomaly, then, in the Oriko timeline is not that either Oriko or Kirika are magical girls, but the form they function in that timeline (Oriko seeing Kriemhild Gretchen and using Kirika to mass murder magical girls in an attempt to save the world), which seems more than possible to me. This theory relies less on Mami’s mind and more on her social graces, which also makes sense. Mami is known to help other magical girls fight witches, even when they seem to be losing (again, the two girls she saved in the beginning of The Different Story, and Kyouko herself, on their first meeting), and she constantly wants a partner with whom she might fight witches. This latter is a strike against this theory, however, as if Oriko and Kirika were teaming up and Mami knew about it, why wouldn’t they include her on their team?
...so, for the most part, I side with the first theory and want to remind everyone that Mami is brilliant, in case you didn’t know.
For purposes of general knowledge, Mami has been a magical girl for two years at the start of the television series.
I arrive at this number through what we see in The Different Story - we see Mami jumping in to help a couple of magical girls a year before she meets Kyouko. I believe she and Kyouko trained together for approximately six months and that the beginning of the series is another six months after that. At the very least, there is a one year mark in The Different Story - it’s winter when Kyouko and Mami separate, and it’s winter again after Sayaka contracts.
...then again - winter and Sayaka is not necessarily true in the series, but even so, I’d expect an approximate similarity in time passed between Mami beginning to teach Madoka and Sayaka through to that winter scene and the time passed between Mami beginning to teach Kyouko and their separation (although I think the latter is a bit longer, given the two-and-a-half months in which the series is expected to take place).
This means that Mami would have been a magical girl for four years by the time of Rebellion Story, unless the Wraith Arc reveals differently (as it might well already have - I haven’t been able to find a translation to read yet, so I’m not up to date on it).

These do give a general idea of how I’ll be writing Mami (...and I’m debating picking up Kyouko, but that’s another thing) and my general thoughts on each of the characters. Hopefully that will help. ^^

Just a reminder that I’m still proud of this. It isn’t the best in the world and it might be overdone, but I’m still proud.
I subscribe to the belief (via Magical Girl Noir Quest) that Mami makes the best pancakes. None can quite compare. They taste like heaven.
I believe that there is at least one year between the events of the series and the events of Rebellion Story - although I will headcanon two. This is primarily due to this shot:
This shot in particular - it shows lengthening of Mami’s face in contrast to that in the original series. And, yeah, that may just be the better art and time paid to the movie over the series (meguca notwithstanding), but I think it’s the passage of time. There’s no explicit indication of how long it has been between Madoka’s ascension and Homura’s, but given how long Homura spent fighting to save Madoka, there’s no reason not to assume that she couldn’t have spent an equal or greater time fighting on her behalf. (Although, to be honest, I do not believe the time periods are at all comparative. I believe she spent longer fighting to save her than for her, as it is far easier to fight for a person you can see and feel than it is to fight for someone that everyone in the world does not remember - Madoka’s little brother notwithstanding, of course.) That said - if you watch the figuring of people’s face over years, you will notice that as they grow older, people’s faces tend to grow longer and thinner, sharper (not all of them, but that seems to be a trend). This is particularly true of people going through puberty (you’ll notice that right beforehand most children appear to be chubby - but the growth spurt stretches them out). Now most girls hit their final growth spurt sometime between the ages of fourteen and fifteen, and Mami is likely fifteen during the series. However, I do believe that her time as a puella magi has screwed with her growth and aging (specifically, I agree with ttshieronym’s theory (as used in their fanfic) that puella magi can control what age they look, as the soul gem will keep them alive indefinitely, although I doubt Mami would know that at this point...but she would be the first to figure it out).
As a result of all this, I do believe that it has been two years since the series and that the Mami we see here is seventeen and a junior in high school (although I would expect not much longer).

Evanora tapped her foot on the floor for a moment, looking at the clock, and finally giving in with a sigh. How could she not, after all? There was that still small voice in her head other people probably would call a conscience. What an annoying little thing it was…
“I suppose. Where?”
Mami glanced down from her perch on the top of Mitakihara bridge, eyes searching the mists for wraiths and content to find none. There was a purple flash to one side - Homura, more than likely - but her soul gem wasn't reacting as it otherwise might. A curious thing.
"Just outside of town, near the train station." Her voice was cool and careful. She'd be there in no time at all. "If that isn't too much to ask?"
