-Their relationship before the trial was just a rivalry. Vaguely civil out of the courtroom, and always trying to outperform each other in the courtroom. YZ often won, of course, and BZ respected her abilities, even admired her. She would have never guessed that it was all a mere facade.

-BZ gets extremely protective of YZ as they become renegades, and White Diamond becomes a very real and very serious threat. At least, until YZ learns how to use her shield. But even then, BZ is always watching YZ’s back.

-The mere thought of losing YZ becomes an increasingly terrifying thought to BZ as their bond grows. She genuinely doesn’t know what she’d do if YZ were to actually be shattered. Would it break her? Would it only spur her forward with a desire for vengeance? She doesn’t know. She doesn’t want to find out.

-BZ is more open about her true feelings than YZ is, being a blue gem. She figures out over time that YZ has trouble expressing how she really feels, and she learns how to interpret YZ’s signals. Learns to decipher her coded messages. It’s the least she can do after all she’s dragged her through.

Just a crack. 12JD scoffed, pacing in an anxious circle in front of her rival. Running her hands through her hair, her mind was already running wild with what-ifs and worst-case-scenarios that terrified her to her core.

14D’s gem was cracked. It may be small now, but given time and stress, it would grow– and who knew how it would affect her light-form in that time? What if the crack grew too big, and 14D outright shattered right before her eyes? What if they weren’t able to fix it, and if it didn’t grow worse, how would they handle it then?

“Stop making a– It is a big deal!” She cried out, throwing her hands upwards for emphasis.

Her pacing stopped, but she kept her eyes locked on her rival. The growing fear was clear in her expression. “We have to find some way to fix this– there has to be some way to heal a cracked gem!”

And here 14D thought she was the dramatic one!

“Calm down! You- you’re freaking me out!” Her rival was taking this way harder than she had anticipated. Why wasn’t the other chiding her? Or just scoff at her mistake? Instead, her rival looked like she was in the middle of her life falling apart on her. 

“At this rate, you’ll give yourself a crack from the stress!” She grips the other’s shoulder firmly, trying to keep the other from pacing. 

“So stop panicking! Yeah, I, I’m pretty sure there is a way, so just, just stop yelling and pacing around! We can, we can look at records or, or research papers, okay!? Just, look at me!” Her grip tightens, grounding her partner but maybe it was to ground 14D herself. “I’ll be fine!” Trying to appease her rival, and convince herself as well. “I mean, I’m precious,” she lets out a shaky laugh, “It would be a shame for me to disappear, right?” She cups the other’s cheek, rubbing her thumb carefully, trying to soothe. “I’ll be fine, dork.”

14D’s hand placed firmly on her shoulder, forcing her to stop and look at her rival. Her mind was still racing through every single horrible way this could turn out, through every worst-case-scenario, the worry and fear clear in her eyes. But through the panic, her rival’s voice sounded loud and clear, jarring her back to reality.

Stop panicking. Look at records. Research papers. There is a way. There has to be a way. 12JD shuddered, closing her eyes and swallowing the growing lump in her throat-- forcing herself to calm down, to stop before she made herself cry from the panic. Nodding her acknowledgement, she tried to give a response, “Okay--” Her voice cracked. Pathetic. Unconvincing. Her eyes opened, meeting her rival’s gaze, and she tried again: “Okay.”

She found herself leaning into the others’ touch, a hand drifting up to rest on top of 14D’s. A solid reminder that she was still there-- she was still able to hold her form. She would be fine. 14D would be fine. She had to be. 12JD took in a deep breath, steadying herself, and pulled up a monocle screen. There wasn’t much she could still access in the system-- she’d been locked out of a good chunk of the database since she’d gone rogue --but she could at least begin a cursory scan of Homeworld’s records on healing cracked gems.

“Just stay close to me from now on, alright?” She spoke, as she scrolled through the files immediately available to her. 12JD let out a faint chuckle, and offered the smallest of smiles. “We have to keep something as precious as you safe, don’t we?”

“Okay, think about it like this– Rose Quartz wasn’t exactly a small Gem. She would have been seen approaching Pink Diamond long before she could even get close to the palanquin. But, as witnesses report, she seemed to come from nowhere when she attacked Pink Diamond. You would think that such a high-profile enemy of the state would have been spotted from a mile away, right?”

“That’s…” It seemed as though things were beginning to sink in more. Jasper had been able to process a lot of what Zircon had said before, but things about the Rose Quartz being Pink truth still hadn’t made sense. She’d witnessed what she thought was impossible to fake, but hadn’t considered how Rose had gotten there. Just that she’d been there at just the right time to end Pink Diamond.

“It was like she just appeared from nowhere.” Her eyes were wide with realization as she sat up a bit. “None of my diamond’s court was there, either. No sapphires, no personal attendants, no pearl… just a handful of us soldiers. And we were told to just guard the furthest perimeter.”

“Exactly! Minimizing the amount of witnesses, while still having enough to create the spectacle she needed. All she needed was a small entourage to spread the message of her supposed demise-- foot soldiers that would not question what they saw, and accept it as truth, with the odd Agate or other higher Gem to validate their reports.”

The more she’d gone over the details in her mind, especially once learning the truth about Rose Quartz’s identity, the more it all made sense. The witness reports being all Quartzes and Rubies, with only a few Agates or similar ranked gems in the mix. The way Rose Quartz had emerged from thin air-- and the mysterious absence of Pink Diamond’s Pearl throughout the whole thing. Of course the Pearl was seemingly not there-- she was masquerading as Rose in her Diamond’s place.
