Generically Unique turned 12 today!
A piece of advice…
Always assume that the other person has a different perspective than you.
Be willing to really listen and understand what they are telling you.
Naturally, at this point, opposition can and will occur.
There's a huge percentage of people who have their TikTok/social media 'facts' and will not be swayed.
From here, you can decide if its worth debating your stance...or walking away with your sanity intact.
The Cleveland Baseball Team 08-27-2024
It's Tuesday but it could also be late Ground Hog's Day.
The team formerly known as the Indians had a moderately successful weekend winning a series against the Texas Rangers. The two out of three in the win column allowed the team to put a little buffer between them and their second place rivals. And then...and then the second place KC Royals showed up on Cleveland's home doorstep. Home had been a saving grace this season for the team. Note the past tense there? With the post All-Star Break implosion ongoing, the team has been dreadful on the road recently and now only sits 1 game over .500 in that category. So, let's circle the wagons and weather the storm by being able to win at home!
Let me stop me right there.
Monday was a double-header situation. In case you've been on the island with Wilson and Chuck Noland, Cleveland has been the worst team in the Major Leagues the last two years when it comes to playing multiple games in the same day. Worse than the Chicago White Sox you ask??!! Yeah, unfortunately so. 1-9 last year (Francona) and 0-8 this year (Vogt). There is still month plus to go in the regular season so let's hope there are no other make-up double dips forthcoming. You would figure that most teams are about 50/50 in doubleheaders. You win one, lose one and go about your business. As a long-suffering Cleveland baseball fan since the early 1990's, it feels like for the most part the franchise rarely is at that break-even ratio and more often much lower for that success rate. But I digress...
In my piece written last week, I outlined some options that could slap a few Band-Aids on all the team's boo-boo's. But it seems like the front office is mostly content to wait until the rosters expand on September first (add up to 2 extra minor league players). I live in St. Louis but partake in the team's games on the MLB app and over the web on their radio station WTAM. I am not submerged in the local water cooler talk or get to hear much of the Cleveland sports radio talk shows. But recently I have caught a chunk of a program after a game and it was a little validating to hear the passionate frustrations being vented.
The dedicated Cleveland fanbase, not the non-supporters whom the ownership group caved to in rebranding the storied franchise, is desperate to support and coax this team to the finish line. It's like driving your car around with warning icons on the dash lit. Yeah, the car is still running but eventually you need to address those warnings. At the trade deadline, the front office tried to have their buddy look at the engine instead of going to the dealer to get the proper service done.
What warning icons were glaringly lit going into the trade deadline period?
- No offensive production from the shortstop and centerfield positions.
- Thread-bare rotation options.
- 55/45 split between the rotation and bullpen on innings distribution.
- Young pitchers and young position players decling success (hit a wall).
- Musical chairs with outfielders who should probably be just infielders.
Let's rewind to the offseason when the ownership and front office was wringing their hands about the TV contract(s) being in flux. It was evident as the weeks and months of winter rolled on that their add-on finances would be very limited. So it caused a bit of concern and confusion when they spent the bulk of their allowance on an extremely light 'hitting' catcher who is a great jokester for $4,000,000. They could've resigned Amed Rosario (good clubhouse guy too) and saved the balance for clubhouse veggie trays. I know a lot of people wanted Rosario run out of town for being a decent offensive (utility) player with below standard defensive skills. But objectively speaking, he did produce with the bat. Review his stats for this year and it checks out. His batting average adjusted over two-thirds of a season would probably be the highest batting average on the team. He gets on base, he can steal a bag here and there and he can move around the field in a pinch.
I probably lost a lot of you with the Rosario argument but I threw that out there as a jumping off point. How many former Cleveland players are sprinkled around the league and are contributing major leaguers? There are a few handfuls. This may just be my perspective but I see that the Cleveland front office, like a lot of other front offices around the league, tends to pigeon-hole players or 'give-up' on them. In my last piece I mentioned Aaron Civale. The club was ecstatic to part with him because of his injury history (and acquire a promising talent). But if you look at the upper level prospects of the franchise and their injury track records: Valera, Chourio, Karinchak, Bieber, McKenzie, DeLauter, Espino et al - something doesn't add up.
Every team is going to experience some bad luck and tough injuries but the Cleveland front office seems to contradict themselves quite a bit. I understand their first priority is keeping cheap but productive options. I get that. But you also have to really pull down that accountant visor a little tighter. Removing Jose Ramirez from the equation for minute and knowing the organizational mindset, when do you move on from assets? Logically with this franchise they have tried to move players who have a high value and are on the cusp of earning big raises in line with what the market is bearing. So why is Gimenez still in the fold? Yes, they signed him to a long term deal but his defense is his best foot forward. Slick-fielding infielders are a pretty common commodity. Slick-fielding infielders who are offensive threats are less abundant. Gimenez does not move the offensive needle. That's why the Mets were OK with shipping him away in the Lindor deal.
If you cryogenically froze a Cleveland fan from mid-summer last year and thawed them this month, the only questions they may have are:
- Where's Tito?
- And why does Myles Straw look different?
At the beginning of August, the team was 25 games above .500. Now they are down to 18 games over .500 and they are assured of having a losing month of August. It seems inevitable that they will be overtaken by Kansas City or Minnesota or both this week or next. The season-long strategy of pulling names out of a hat to play a position or hit in a spot in the order seems to finally have lost it's magic.
The so-called sports radio experts are still confident Cleveland can limp their way along and qualify for a playoff spot as a wild card team. But that most likely locks the team into a playoff series on the road. See above where I mention that team's flatline activity on the road since the All-Star Break (it's icky).
Riding a perfect storm of success in the first half, the ownership and front office could've really bolstered the team's talent and confidence. Instead, they threw away three (3) prospects on a serviceable, not great, outfielder (coming off of an injury shorted season so far) in Lane Thomas. Thomas has not been the answer to any questions besides: who is the biggest bust of the entire trading deadline?
I don't mean to drag Lane Thomas egregiously but this move is Jason Michaels bad. Analytics permeates the entire league and the day-to-day gameplans. Initially, the bill of sale for Thomas projected some decent production based on his limited track record. Instead, what has been delivered is like a package that fell off a delivery truck and was run over by a Mack truck at a high rate of speed. Woof.
Coming down the home stretch of the season and this piece, I offer Stephen Vogt a touch of caution. I understand he wants his players to play for him and be his buddy (he's noted as being well-liked by players) but...BUT you will lose the momentum with the fanbase if you don't be a little more honest and truthful. It's not necessary to throw anybody under the bus but COME ON. You can't keep spouting the weak and tired lines such as: the effort is there and things didn't break our way.
Pitchers are expected to find a way to get hitters out and hitters are paid to try to break down a pitcher for hits, walks and runs - even the aces (Cole) of the league. If it wasn't for the monumental efforts of the bullpen to date, this would be a virtual repeat of 2023. So where do we go from here? I am aware that ranting with fist shaking at the sky will not change anything.
The Mariners recently fired their 9-year manager to try to shock the team into waking up. I'm not suggesting the same fate for Vogt but something needs to be done to try to change course away from the iceberg ahead. This team went from whispered World Series dark horse to head-tilt pity nod with sad smile. With 30 games to go, the team is sitting in first place by 1 game (they were up by 9 games in June). I guess we shall see what kind of fight and character the team has. Safe travels and we'll talk again soon…
The Cleveland Baseball Team 08-23-2024
Four words to describe the state of the team at present:
Dead. In. The. Water.
For a team that has wildly overachieved this year, the last 8 weeks of baseball have been hard to watch for Cleveland fans. The team is still the second best (as of this morning) by Win-Loss record in the American League. And given that the starting pitching has mostly been an unmitigated disaster since the beginning of the campaign, it's bonified miracle that the team is 19 games above .500 even with their struggles within the division.
On the surface the numbers for August and July are not Chicago White Sox terrible but they are very troubling. In July the team was 13 wins and 12 losses (7-5 after the All-Star break). They scored 2 or less runs in 12 of the 25 games (they were shut out 6 times). The molasses effect has carried over into August. The team has 8 wins and 12 losses - going 6 and 12 over the last 18 after winning two games to start the month. Again spotlighting the so-called offense, the former Tribe team has scored 2 or less runs 7 times (that includes a pair of 2-1 victories in there) and added two more shutouts to the pile.
I'm not sure if other teams have picked up on the swing early mentality of the team but it seems like opposing pitchers are getting some early count freebie outs and in turn are having an easier time getting deep into games. As of late they have been able to work back into counts and draw some walks but when it comes to putting the ball in play and generating a legit hit, the team's batting average is resembling Austin Hedges sub-Mendoza batting line.
Stephen Vogt should get a pass as this is his first year in the rumble seat. Truth be told he has done a pretty decent job piecing things together and leveraging Jose Ramirez and the overworked but highly effective bullpen. I do not always agree with the merry-go-round change in lineups from day-to-day but overall the results have yielded wins.
I do think the front office should be called onto the carpet a bit here. Before the trade deadline it became pretty obvious what the team was lacking: starting pitching, any offensive production in centerfield, a shortstop who can consistently put up quality AB's and a rocking chair for Austin Hedges in the clubhouse. As usual the team was crying poor when it came to acquiring starting pitching - but then look at some of the puzzling deals made at the deadline to acquire reasonable number 3 starting pitchers (Flaherty, Fedde, etc.) at minimal cost. The team did ink Boyd and early returns are promising. But then the Alex Cobb deal was a complete head-scratcher. This team dogged Aaron Civale for always being injured and flipped him (yes, I'm glad they got Manzardo) but then why get a retread of a retread in Cobb who had been out with multiple different injuries all year? Two starts into his Cleveland tenure, shocker, Cobb comes up lame. It hurts my brain.
Now we come to Myles Straw 2.0 aka Lane Thomas. Down in the minor leagues the team has their centerfielder of years past languishing and batting around .250 that they are paying around $5 million. A huge sum for most non-injury rehabbing former major leaguers. Myles Straw has fallen out of favor with the powers that be over the last 18 months or so. So why would you bring in a guy who basically is his clone? Speedy, plays good defense, .240-.260 hitter, steals bases, right-handed bat, strikes out too much for a fast guy...can you figure out which one I'm talking about here? Straw or Thomas? They are basically the same player. The only difference is Thomas has a propensity to hit a few more long balls. Not recently but it is on his baseball card stats. Since being acquired, Lane Thomas has 60 at-bats and 7 hits (3 doubles and 4 singles). He has 1 RBI to go with 6 walks and 28 strikeouts. In his lone attempt to steal he was successful. He is batting .117 - that's pretty nasty. When you go to the big picture here and see that the club overpaid with three (3) prospects to acquire a duplicate of something they already have in-house, it makes no sense.
That's all the notable transactions to mention for the pennant race reinforcements. The team did some other dumpster diving moves when the Giants jettisoned a starting pitcher who was entirely ineffective and immediately plugged him into their rotation for a hot minute. Low and behold that move did not bear fruit. Injuries and slumps are part of the game. Each time rides the waves of each. Some are able to navigate these better than others. However, it looks like Cleveland is about to encounter Niagara Falls...
I mentioned the starting rotation has been a source for concern from the get-go. As we get ready to step to the threshold of the last month of the season, whom is going to start for this club in September? Lively and Bibee have done a solid job getting to this point but both are edging beyond their recent benchmarks in innings workloads. Gavin Williams looks back to his old self one minute and then off the map the next. Boyd's comeback story is a feel-good one but he's bound to have some bumps in the road over the next five weeks. So that leaves the tangled mess of Cantillo, Carrasco, Allen, Cobb and McKenzie to try to scoot this team to the finish line. This group has been riddled with injuries and inconsistency. If this team does weather the storm and secure the division and/or a wild card spot, who do you trust to pitch in the postseason besides the back-end of the bullpen? Of the obvious choices, will they be out-of-gas or simply beyond their innings limits and therefore off-limits?
I've been a Cleveland baseball fan since the summer of 1992. Some of you may be asking if I'm a fan of the team or just being a troll. I'm a fan through and through. I still contend that if Trevor Bauer hadn't been a dumbass the club would've captured the 2016 Fall Classic. But that is 8 years in the rearview mirror. In the here and now, this offense if offensive. I think the front office missed an opportunity to trade Andres Gimenez at the trade deadline. Yes I said it. He is such a one-dimensional (defensive) player. Yes, once a week he'll do something with the bat but his trade value as a platinum glove winner will probably never be higher. With so many middle infielders MLB-ready or near ready, it's probably time to move on from him. There's a reason he didn't displace Rosario as everyday shortstop. He had one solid MLB stint as an offensive player and it earned him a nice payday. With the team always looking to walk back the salary figures, it makes a lot of sense. Josh Naylor these days is looking like Josh Bell did for Cleveland. He's got a ton of passion and hustle but is he really a cornerstone piece? his long stretches of hot and cold streaks suggest the answer is no.
Besides the ill-fated 2016 season, I wonder if this team will become cohesive enough to win a World Series title in my lifetime. Jose Ramirez is one player - an MVP-caliber player - but teams are starting to bypass him or make him expand the zone to get production with so little help around him. Hitting at the Major League level is one of the most difficult things to do. That is why players earn the big bucks and why so many of them fail 75% of the time. There is no magic formula to win a baseball game and that's why they play the games. But here lately, it seems like this team is either mailing it in or getting exposed as AAAA player talent. The first half of the season showed that they can win but the second half of the season always shows which teams are hardened enough to win when it counts.
It's always easy to point out the problems and not offer any solutions. With that in mind, here are my solution suggestions:
- DFA Hedges ($4M signing? Really?!).
- Stop bringing up/recalling Gose.
- Start Bo Naylor every day (let him figure it out).
- Give Kwan a IL stay (he looks tired and sluggish)
- Freeman and Schneemann need to go to AAA (they look tired and unsure).
- Sign Bieber to a 2-year deal for 2025-2026 (reduced contract & could have big upside).
- Bring up Manzardo to play first base.
- Bring up Straw for phantom IL stint Lane Thomas needs.
- Bring up Arias to be utility/bench player.
- Bring in Trevor Bauer (yes I said it. Rob Manfred screwed over Bauer as a personal vendetta and also screwed over the Cleveland franchise by forcing them to rebrand. Bauer knows how to pitch and attack hitters. It could help someone like Cantillo or McKenzie or Williams on those days where they don't have their best stuff but need to battle and 'think' through attacking hitters.)
These are my personal observations and suggestions. Will any of them occur? Who knows? Have a great weekend and let's hope for some better baseball soon…
