If you had a heart disease, would you get medical help for it, or would you say “I don’t need help, I can fix it on my own.” The second option seems ridiculous, right? But that’s what so many people with mental health problems say to themselves today.

When you have a mental disorder, your brain literally isn’t working properly. That’s not something you can get rid of just by “wishing” it away or by “trying harder.” Medication isn’t for everyone, but for a lot of people, it brings their brain chemistry back to normal and helps them function. I am one of those people.

For almost a third of my life I have been struggling with major depression, several anxiety disorders, self harm, and unspecified dissociative disorder. I finally found the right medication for me, and it helps. A lot.

I have seen too many people suffer unnecessarily because they are too afraid that they will be perceived as weak. But there is no shame or weakness in taking medication for your mental health. Having the courage to get help is the strongest thing of all.
