SHES ONLY THREE APPLES TALL 😨. she moved to the dumptruck middle of NOWHERE small town with a tumultuous home situation, had to spend her entire summer in an arcade because she couldn't find any friends, and started getting followed around by 4 boys at school. FINALLY making friends was such an exciting thing for her.
but no matter how hard she tried to be cool she kept being aggressively pushed away from the group- how UNHAPPY would she have been to constantly be left out from her friends,, all because she "couldn't replace el"- this mystery girl?.
after the alternate dimension possession mindflayer fiasco, she finally got to meet "el" for the first time-the girl she was constantly compared to, who, throughout all the chaos and monster fighting and crying and screaming and throwing up, had seemed like the one girl-savior that was very clearly much better than max in any way, shape, or form possible. but after being left out and compared for the entire time she had been friends with the boys, she still put her hand out to introduce herself to (Jane)- because she didn't see a superhero, she saw a girl her age.
WHO COMPLETELY IGNORED HER ASS like she was chopped liver (or whatever appropriately white phrase)
YET the next summer, she stepped up to meet Jane and first, help her to explain boy problems and personal style and comic books and pop culture; she helped her understand girlhood (and probably taught her about periods too). SHE!!! showed Jane what it's like to be spirited and rebellious and have unbelievable amounts of fun without having to worry about what others think. UGH so CUTE. on a more serious note, she showed Jane that incredible fun with your friends doesn't have to be kissing on your bed.
SO in fact, max is 3 apples tall and such an amazing friend. I also love the fact (or idea) that she had been constantly pushed away from will when she first met him, and seen how sheltered and even maybe repressed he was by mike / joyce as a kid-but throughout their later teenage years, she reached out to him in cali and they got to connect and talk about loads of things 🩵 (making their s5 rejoining that meaningful!!)
