This is not a scanlation. All translations are provided in Google Docs and Sheets. They are free to be cited and used, but please don't forget to credit the project as a source, thank you!

Please also note that, because of how different the translation issues are depending on the language, English and French documents have different annotations.

Current progress: Chapter 1 - p.13

I work on OP TAP about 1h each day of the week.

My pro pace is at 10-20 pages an hour, but it takes me longer to transcribe and translate this project.

First, because the first pages are always longer to translate, but the first OP chapter is also quite long and dense.

Second, it takes a lot more time to think about natural ways to translate closest to the original (as opposed to how I usually adapt the content), and to comment on the numerous first occurrences I find, from lore to onomatopoeia.

Third, because I do this in two languages.

I hope to get faster as it goes!

Introduction to OP TAP

OP TAP aims to provide an unofficial, accurate, and annotated translation of One Piece, as well as insights into the meaning and symbolism of the manga’s dialogue, sound effects, panels, and actions, which all influence the translation.

It is a tool and a resource for anyone passionate about this universe.

The project in no way seeks to replace or criticize official or unofficial translations, as it does not share the same objective and does not face the same challenges. However, it occasionally makes use of these sources to explain differences in translation and interpretation between versions.

The purpose of this translation

Translations of fiction are intended to be accessible to their target audience. In the case of One Piece, the readership consists primarily of teenagers who generally want to immerse themselves in the story without being interrupted by footnotes or phrasing that might sound unnatural. The translation process therefore involves a great deal of adaptation and localization.

OP TAP, on the other hand, aims to make the original version accessible in all its nuances. The project is intended for fans who want more, whether for research, for enjoyment, or both.

It also aims to make searching for terms and expressions easier than flipping through the manga page by page. It is a work of analysis, but also a tool for fans.
