The Mayor’s Office of Partnerships and Grant Services’ (OPGS) mission is to enhance the capacity of District government agencies, community and faith-based organizations, and nonprofits to identify, apply, and secure resources that advance the Mayor’s top public policy priorities. The Office of partnerships and Grants Service attended the 2012 MAJOR GIFTS CONFERENCE, Sponsored by the National Development Institute on – FEBRUARY 28-29. at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, MD.   There were over 200 nonprofit leaders and capacity building practitioners in attendance.  The conference provided information on how to properly identify, engage, cultivate and invite individuals to invest in nonprofits with major gifts.  It also helped the participants find new tools and strategies to ensure that their nonprofit remained  relevant in the community despite the decreased support of traditional sources of nonprofit funding.

And we are back! This week at OPGS:

Yesterday OPGS hosted a training session for local aspiring non-profits to help them navigate the 501(c)3 application.  Teleakah Brooks, of Trinity University, led the training session and provided a line by line review of the application necessary to gain tax exempt status for the IRS.  Despite the somewhat dry material of the application itself, Ms. Brooks provided an incredibly helpful and entertaining presentation of the material.  A video with some extended clips from the presentation will be up on our vimeo site (http://vimeo.com/opgs).  It is also posted here, see below. 

In addition to the 501(c)3 application review video, we are continuing to expand the video material we have available on our vimeo site.  As of now, six of the ten classes from this spring’s Grantwriting workshop are now available online and the remaining four should be up by the end of next week.  This past spring, OPGS hosted this 10 week program, taught by Stephen Broyles, President of the Magi Group LLC, that was designed for both the novice and experienced grant seeker. This ten week course combined expert instruction, with practical exercises to take the participants step-by-step through all the stages of planning programs, locating funding sources and writing grant proposals. 

As usual, OPGS Deputy Director, Pat Henry was kept busy with her quest to find any new District Based, Federal, and Foundation grants for the weekly Funding Alert.  She published last week’s findings on Monday.  You can find this week’s, as well as previous funding alerts on our website at http://opgs.dc.gov/opgd/cwp/view,a,1318,q,587660.asp.  Pat will be working hard the rest of the week to find more potential grants for District government agencies, District non-profits, CBOs and faith based organizations to publish next Monday. 

Kathy DeBoe continues to run the Grant Information Resource Center (GIRC)as usual.  The GIRC provides technical assistance and information about resources that improve community services in the District of Columbia for its “customers” -District government, nonprofit, and faith-based representatives. The primary focus is to assist customers who either lack computer access or the knowledge to best use their existing computer technology to strengthen their organizations. Going on vacation

Hi all you loyal followers.  I'm sorry to say but the OPGS blog is going to be inactive for a couple of weeks.  Our intern Brendan, who manages the blog, has to focus on his final exams and then he is home for winter break.  He comes back to OPGS in early January and posts will resume then.  Check back in the new year for some awesome stuff.  OPGS's biennial report should be out by then!
