Going on vacation
Hi all you loyal followers. I'm sorry to say but the OPGS blog is going to be inactive for a couple of weeks. Our intern Brendan, who manages the blog, has to focus on his final exams and then he is home for winter break. He comes back to OPGS in early January and posts will resume then. Check back in the new year for some awesome stuff. OPGS's biennial report should be out by then!

Video from last week's presentation on the New D.C. Nonprofit Code. The Office of Partnerships and Grant Services offered a comprehensive workshop on the the New DC Nonprofit Code and Nonprofit Governance on Wednesday, November 30, 2011. This workshop discussed the basic provisions of the new DC Nonprofit Code, which goes into effect on January 1, 2012, and how it will impact how the nonprofit governs itself. Using this presentation, nonprofits can learn about the new rules regarding membership organizations, the fiduciary duties of officers and directors, board committees and registered agents. Regina Hopkins the Project Director of the Community Economic Development Project of the DC Bar Pro Bono Program was the presenter. Last Week at OPGS
Last week, OPGS staff sat down with the Office of Latino Affairs (OLA) to improve coordination between our two offices. OPGS and OLA are in the midst of planning a new capacity building program to better serve the Latino Community in D.C. One of these events will be a brown bag lunch with grant makers and grant seekers looking to serve the Latino community. So far, OLA has more than 50 organizations that are interested in participating in this new program. OPGS is also planning to host the GIRC-OLA week in which OLA grant seekers will sit down with OPGS staff to learn how to best utilize the GIRC provided by OPGS. OLA is in the process distributing a survey to the grant seekers so that we can customize each GIRC appointment to be as effective and efficient as possible. OPGS and OLA are still looking for grants and grant makers interested in the areas of education, workforce development, economic development, youth development, and afterschool programs focused on the Latino community. Hopefully we can continue to work with OLA to get this new capacity building service for Community Based Organizations (CBOs) by sometime in February.
Meanwhile, OPGS Deputy Director, Pat Henry was kept busy with her quest to find any new District Based, Federal, and Foundation grants for the weekly Funding Alert. In addition, OPGS Director, Lafayette Barnes and The Department of Small and Local Business Development attended the Georgetown University D.C. competitive initiative meeting at the school of business to look at ways to provide technical assistance to D.C. small businesses. He said that meeting produced a lot of creative ideas and he is looking forward to seeing those ideas develop.
OPGS also hosted a successful workshop teaching nonprofits how to navigate the new D.C. nonprofit code. There were 70 participants from throughout the greater Washington area. Regina Hopkins, the Project Director of the Community Economic Development Project of the DC Bar Pro Bono Program, gave a detailed presentation on all of the new rules and regulations that nonprofits in the D.C. area will have to comply with starting January 1st, 2012. The event was so well received that there was a waitlist. In order to accommodate, there will be an encore performance in January. The slides from the presentation are available on our website. In addition, a video composed of several clips from the presentation should be online tomorrow. I’ll post that video as soon as it is available.
