Alright, I’ve settled into it, and I just… have a whole lot of feelings about this chapter. I mean, it still feels riddled with a lot of the same problems that this entire arc has suffered from, but you all know how I feel about Lucy, and getting to see her step into the spotlight and show off more of her repertoire is really amazing. The way she moves, the way she handles herself and responds lightning-quick to everything Brandish does and judges in an instant exactly what the counter should be to her opponent’s attacks… she moves like Erza. That’s all I could think of, reading this chapter. She has a grace about her in battle that’s just like Erza, and that’s beyond amazing to me. Considering that not even three years ago (from her perspective) she had barely any magical training and no combat experience whatsoever, it’s amazing that she’s reached this level.

One of the things that really struck me this chapter, also, was how this fight between Lucy and Brandish feels like a call back to her battle with Angel. Instead of watching in horror as Leo and Aries fight, this time she’s the one being forced into conflict with someone she cares for. And I think that really underscores just how much Lucy has grown, both magically and personally. She hates this. She still hates this. She hates having to see or be involved in conflict between people who shouldn’t be at war with each other, but there’s no hesitation this time. There’s no wavering, no trying to end short-term conflict at the expense of the big picture. This isn’t Lucky Lucy, trying to learn to be a wizard but still way out of her depth. This is Lucy of Fairy Tail, Lucy the Ninth Master, the Morningstar ascendant, and it’s beautiful to watch.
