March 30th Quest at The Racket Club

The crowd, nicely warmed by the lyrical liveliness of Floyd-inspried Jimmy's Big Tears, settled into their drinking shoes and commenced upon Quest's final hurrah of the term - Quest Radio meets The Racket Club meets The Victoria. 

Behind the wheels of steel, Grace Herbert, fresh out of Uncle Fester's Attic to DJ. Compering on the night , Amy Newbury, lady of all things Brand Spanking.  Up next were three piece All We Are from Liverpool who enticed the crowd with their perfect blend of moody, Shadows-esque guitar sounds and xx-infused chill wave. Their rendition of Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Games' was jaw-dropping, the perfect prequel to their single 'Trainspotting' which was debuted on Lauren Laverne's BBC 6 Music show that very morning.

  Safari, with their an animalistic take on indie, were next to launch into their set. Lead by two synths (We all play synth!) they proved a hit with the gathered onlookers and a worthy warm up to Queen Mary and Quest Radio favourites Texas Radio. Aaron Barber and Henry Bishop - the guitarist and bassist of Texas Radio - present the blues show on Quest and their knowledge of the music was on show tonight. Texas Radio provided an education on how to get down and dirty to gut wrenching blues with enigmatic front man Simon Haithwaite, prancing like a headmaster, schooling the crowd in shaking free and kicking loose. Have you heard of a little number called 'Johnny B. Goode'? No, not until you heard Texas Radio have you heard 'Johnny B. Goode'.

Texas Radio are no strangers to The Vic. Its walls have bore witness to their mastery of the blues a number of times. Queen Victoria, its namesake, ruled over the British Empire for 63 years. May Texas Radio rein over us for at least as long. 

So, to The Temperance Movement  to close proceedings. An  exciting number formed between London and Glasgow, this suitably dishevelled outfit provided a loud, proud and raucous finale to the night. With all the swagger of The Faces they came delivering a tight set of spectacular hi-jinks, proper facial hair and good old fashioned Rock'n'Roll.

To all presenters leaving this year, you will be sorely missed. Your contributions have invaluable this year and we hope you will take a bit of Quest with you as you leave (figuratively - no pinching of the equipment). Socials and awards to come in the new term!

Lady Leshurr at Topman CTRL, 8 March

This is an article I wrote for the Radio Station I work for. What I did.

Thursday 8th of March saw the launch of Topman CTRL in London - a new night sponsored by Topman where Hew Stephens (Radio 1) and a host of guest controllers bring the best in new music and entertainment. Brand Spanking hosted a competition on their show giving away tickets and gained exclusive interviews with Clock Opera, Hew Stephens and (yes, you heard it here) The 2 Bears. Unfortunately, the winner of the competition couldn’t make it at short notice so Ryan and Amy dragged along Floss Taylor from ReQuest, myself off Bad Television and (let’s just say..) standee competition winner Daniel Smith from Cambridgeshire (History and Politics at QMUL).

A good night was had by all. The Victorian Vaults off Great Eastern Street serve as a suitably sassy venue for the gathered “press” and selected bands and DJs that took to the stage. The walls buzzed with the happy vibrations of Citizens, followed by Clock Opera and then the DJ, Star Slinger. He showcased his new remix of Since I Left You, which will feature on the 10 Year Anniversary disk of The Avalanches’ seminal album of the same name. You need to check it out. Due to be released later this year, it promises to be big.

And then came a DJ set by The 2 Bears (and they were just right). 

Clambering to the stage after indulging at the free bar, The 2 Bears closed the night with a set comprised of remixed songs off their new album Be Strong, remixes they have done for other artists and a meticulously selected miscellany of Hip Hop, House and Soul. Joe Goddard and Raf Rundell are true veterans in the music industry and their depth of musical connoisseurship was unashamedly on display tonight. 

Guests upon leaving the vaults, received a 2 Bears tea towel. A vital addition to any music lover’s kitchen tea set. 2 Bears - you were amazing!

Congratulations Daniel Smith for competing so successfully in ‘Gareth Keenen: Look Like Me’.

This Ain't California 

I came across this film while looking through a brochure for Berlinale 2012 while in Berlin. Maybe it was the picture or the title that caught my eye - the title seemingly symbolic of the wealth of independent, out-of-Hollywood films to go see. It looks like a provocative, fun-filled tilt on Berlin's history that sidesteps the normal cliché of East V West, focusing instead on friendship. I'd say worth 90 minutes of anyone's time.

The filmmakers are looking for sponsorship to get the film the exposure it deserves. You should check out their website and pledge, pledge, pledge!

So this is it...

This -

...this is me setting out on tumblr properly. This is me entering into the world of blogging where I will present to you - the reader - a condensed view of the things that interest me. By "condensed view", I mean a view that cuts out the mundane and ordinary aspects of life which are of little or no interest to anyone. I can't imagine today for instance, as being noted as particularly worthy of account but here goes anyway.

The time is currently 14.24, it is a Thursday:

It is approximately 0° outside, visibility is 'Moderate' and Pressure is at '1039mb'.

I have moved twice out of my bedroom so far today. Once to get cereal and milk, of which I had two bowls full and once to see my girlfriend out of the house. She dropped some cornflakes on the carpet which she said she was going to clear up. I have just clocked that they are still on the carpet. 

I have had two cups of coffee, the kettle is currently on the boil. I drink my coffee without milk or sugar. I enjoy strong, full bodied coffee. It can be said that I like my coffee to be like my women i.e. In a cup.

I have surveyed the online papers/facebook/emails. Fabio Capello has quit his post as manager for the England Football team - I. Am. Ambivalent.

I looked up the weather on the BBC website.

Five army helicopters (not Chinooks) have flown past the bedroom window. A search for nearby RAF bases online suggests that they are probably on their way to RAF Northolt. I assume they appreciate that visibility is at 'Moderate'. 

This blog is intended as a cure for boredom. The mind numbing boredom that you feel shuffling up your spine using its vertebrates as slats to heave itself and pull upon. I am a University student, I curate and present a radio show which goes out once a week and I DJ. I live and study in East London where I 'do' English. My camera has been slowly gathering dust since I started at University but I intend to reinvigorate my love for it to offer a pictorial/textual account of what I am getting up to while out and about. 

NOTE: This blog is NOT a thinly veiled, humorous, well written and regularly updated attempt to win internships in the future by creating an online footprint and proof of independent writing. However, future employers should ignore this post and look at others, like the next one which will be a presentation of my trip to Berlin, from which I have just returned.
