GIVE CRAIG A WANDER OVER YONDER & #SAVEWOY SHOUT-OUT/ANY QUESTIONS at the “TV GAME CHANGERS“ Panel at CTNx Animation Expo 2016

If you haven’t noticed yesterday night, Wander Over Yonder (and Powerpuff Girls/Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends) creator, Craig McCracken will be at the “TV GAME CHANGERS” panel this FRIDAY at 12:30 PM Pacific Time at Theater 02 at CTNx Animation Expo 2016 at the Burbank Airport Marriott Convention Center in Burbank, CA.

He as well as other great creators: his wife LAUREN FAUST (developer of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), ALEX HIRSCH (creator of Gravity Falls), REBECCA SUGAR (creator of Steven Universe), and old co-worker in Dexter’s Laboratory, BUTCH HARTMAN (creator of The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom).

I know this post seems like this is meant for the Wander Over Yonder fandom, and that it should be for everything the creators do. Which, yeah, it’s amazing to see them together for this once in a lifetime panel with many different fans and artists seeking advice to make better-animated shows as their influence in the stories, characters, and visual designs and animation.

There will be many Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Bronies, Powerpuff Girls, Foster’s Home, and Fairly OddParents fans with many artists taking up the seats. But as for the Wander fans, being smaller than them given it’s a recent show not a lot may have heard of or thinks it’s not the best or just a fun show, I think any Wanderer planning to attend (and yeah the tickets are still selling despite beginning tomorrow), can blend in and still make good momentum in supporting Craig’s underrated show as much as everyone can make remarks on PPG and Foster’s Home as very nostalgia, plus the MLP appreciation, which is great and all.

I’m not gonna make it to the Expo though because I got busy things to do, and trying to build up my own art skills (I might attend next years’ CTNx). But if anyone is planning, or has yet to maybe buy a ticket, this is your once in a lifetime opportunity to meet @crackmccraigen and Lauren Faust as well as Alex, Rebecca, and Butch to hear their past achievements, their creativity, their views on the industry, and what they are up to next. 

But most importantly, if you want to spread the word about Wander Over Yonder, and how it deserves to be recognized as one of the great shows with the other great popular ones even though it’s not as big as them, plus being aware of the #SaveWOY campaign and the fight to inform Disney on possibly renew the show for Season 3 with a plan Craig, @suspendersofdisbelief (Frank Angones), @amyjhiggins, @gingerhaze and other writers and crew made that seemed promising (and maybe the second Disney show to be revived since Kim Possible), give the show a shout-out, and ask questions relating to Wander and what are his thoughts on the #SaveWOY campaign.

Of course, be sure to remain respectuful and polite to other fandoms and artists attending the panel. They have their own excitement of different shows and creators that sometimes they might not care or may learn to check it out if they think it’s good by their own expectations. But hey, having them together to disucss their works, ambitions, funny moments at work, why they made it, and what they aim to do in the future makes it a good opportunity to check them out and their past works too.

(Question to Alex): How was it like bumping into Craig during seperate work periods given that he made the popular Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home before you came into the animation workforce?

What was the main arc of Season 3 like without giving away anything major, was it meant to go further in progression while making more funnier cartoons?

Do you listen to hot jazz music when making Wander?

What was the first pitch like when you intended to make it a 22 min. serialized show focusing on Wander and Sylvia’s frenemies growth plus Lord Hater and Peepers’ antics, but Disney said to make it a one-off cartoon show to help reruns for S1, why didn’t get as much of a treatment in structure as what Gravity Falls did in going further in serialized elements, despite getting much creative freedom in any creator-driven show?

How did you compromised with Disney on making S2 a semi-serialized set of stories with one-off episodes in between tentpoles?

Did you know that Wander is featured in Disneyland as a water art amongst characters like Mickey and Donald?

If Wander Over Yonder were to return if Disney changes its mind by popular demand someday, would you return to work on Season 3?

Yes, even when the PPG got rebooted that caused some mixed backlash and has its own fans, make sure to let him know that the orignal PPG show is still amazing in its right.

Dear Disney XD,

@disneyxd Four months after the finale, still no reruns in America or news of a third season, and yet Wander Over Yonder still has all of this support. Did you ever imagine this sort of response when your executives decided to cancel the show? Do you still believe that 80 episodes are enough? Do you think that if that were true then there would be a campaign this strong or a fanbase this devoted saying otherwise?

37,000 supporters. More than the Gravity Falls fandom (your biggest fandom and most successful Disney XD show) trying to get their show on DVD. More than the campaign to save Disney Infinity, which Disney sold 3 million copies of.

This campaign has been going on since March 5th 2016. That’s nearly eight months. Yet the campaign is still going strong.

If Wander Over Yonder wasn’t a show worth saving, then this campaign wouldn’t exist or it would definitely never have this much support.

We understand.

You decide what shows are made and renewed because you are the ones with the money, you are the ones in charge, you know what keeps your network afloat. But what is television without the viewers? What is Disney XD  without its viewers? Both sides are just as important and need each other, so surely there should be some middle ground where both sides can meet and the argument considered and then the network and viewers can work together to make Disney XD even better! (Especially in cases like this where there are thousands of people all supporting and wanting the same thing.)

When it’s one sided, the other side can feel disconnected. That their opinion means nothing when the channel is also meant to be tailored for them. Listening to or at least acknowledging your viewers and their concerns can help to improve your network and help you connect with them to keep them engaged and coming back for more. You don’t have to start approving more things (We know how much you have to put up with campaign-wise and a lot of fans don’t really know what’s best) but at least consider what the other side is trying to say and go from there.

Your slogan is “The Future Is Now.” Then let’s make a better future right now for Disney XD by working together. Not just for the SaveWOY campaign but to ensure that the network, the viewers and the people who work for you are all happy or at least understand each other.

Right now the only reason we were given for the cancelation of Wander Over Yonder was that “80 episodes are enough.” We have heard nothing else on the matter despite trying to reach out to you to discuss it.

Please pass this on to the @disneyxd executives. Reach out to us. Work with us. We want to hear your side of the story, your true reasons. Then we can share ours and hopefully together we can work out a solution where both sides are happy or at the very least, come to a mutual understanding.

We had a sudden boost in signatures last night which pushed the petition to 37,000 signatures! 

That’s another milestone achieved! Good work everyone! Now, I know the petition is slow but let’s keep at it. We are getting roughly 25 signatures a day now, which isn’t bad at all considering the finale premiered nearly 4 months ago. People are still only just discovering the petition and the show.

As for the SaveWOY projects, this month we have Trending Twenty-Seventh, The WOY Villain Leaderboard, WOYtober, Tot-ober, The SaveWOY Gift Exchange and the thunderclap (which also reached its goal so well done everyone!)

Let’s keep the campaign going strong by taking part in these fan projects, buying merchandise and episodes on iTunes/Amazon and sending letters and emails to Disney.

October Trending Twenty-Seventh Thunderclap

October’s Trending Twenty-Seventh will be expanding from Tumblr into Twitter and Facebook. It will be much harder to get it trending on those websites but it never hurts to try. Wander already has an established fan base on Tumblr but there aren’t as many of us on Twitter and Facebook so our first step will be to raise more awareness. 

So to focus on the Facebook and Twitter part of October’s Trending Twenty-Seventh, I have set up a new SaveWOY Thunderclap. We will still have the prompt for Tumblr and schedule a post on that prompt. But this thunderclap will basically serve as our starting point for expanding Trending Twenty-Seventh to other social media sites. As well as the thunderclap, I encourage you all to create your own WOY/SaveWOY posts on the day as well. 

The Thunderclap is also set to launch at 8pm EDT on October 27th. For the Thunderclap to work it needs at least 250 supporters. So please support it using your Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook accounts and also spread awareness for the Thunderclap.

FALSE ALARM. NO RERUNS FOR WANDER OVER YONDER

JUST PLACEHOLDERS FOR MORE OLDER POPULAR SHOWS RERUNS AND NEW SHOWS RERUNS

Sigh. Well, it was fun while it lasted. Though I think it was not surprising seeing that others sensed that it’s not finalized until a week towards that schedule.

Heck, Gravity Falls had that reruns placeholders and now they’re replaced by the finalized schedule as well.

Wander slots are now replaced by more Phineas and Ferb reruns, one or two Gravity Falls reruns, and reruns of previous new episodes of Futureworm, Milo Murphy’s Law, Right Now Kapow, Lab Rats Elite Force, Star Vs. The Forces of Evil, and Walk the Prank. These are the new line-ups of reruns after Monday Disney XD will stick to (and has always been since August in the mornings, now in the evening since kids are back to school). So Wander is not likely to pop up in the rerun schedule for a long while.

I guess Disney-ABC Television Group ordered Disney XD to focus more on the new shows and older previously high rated shows than promoting the lesser successful rated shows (including Wander, 7D, Randy Cunningham, and Penn Zero despite planned to air all of Season 2 this Fall). And it’s business that they’re restructuring the promotion planning and fundings on newer shows and high rated shows to keep the channel up float and choose which highly rated show can premiere on Disney XD on Disney Channel block.

Though what if Disney knew about the campaign and decided to really ignore it by yanking the show off the air for real? Maybe they thought that we as adults aren’t the right audience to cater to since their mindset is to market the show and their other shows as always towards kids 2-11; 6-11 and boys same range that we’re radically not part of the financial ratings trend. 

Then again, Disney has occasionally embraced the adult fandoms of Gravity Falls and Star Vs. the Forces of Evil IF the ratings in the kids demo and social media trends as visible to Disney’s eyes meet the profitable demands relative to the budget and engagement by kids. Wander never had that despite the buzz in S2 except for the okay ratings and really good reruns ratings.

See, we’ve made all our progress work some way, and got Disney’s attention. The monthly trends have been doing good and will grow stronger each month. But I think Disney would really appreciate the demands more if their targeted audience (kids and parents) would join in the fun and expressing their thoughts about the cancellation whether they noticed or not. They’re the ones who dictate in the age group ratings on whether the show gets cancelled or renewed for years to come in the end.

I mean, look at how Gravity Falls is beloved below:

This show here (which I do love, don’t get me wrong) made a huge impact with viewers and fans for its mysteries, serialized elements, smart writing, humorous characters, and huge praises by social media of how it’s very unique from other shows that it’s worth a buy to watch it on Disney XD, a channel that is niche and limited from viewers in cable plans.

Gravity Falls wasn’t just successful because of its big fandom, not just because of how amazing the stories are (which they are in quality), not just because of how much the creator is engaged in the show’s activities with the fans (SDCC and others). It is successful because the Ratings were off the roofs in the kids demographic (1 million views in average on Disney XD), social media buzz were so visible to Disney, the merch. being made possible by huge ratings sold pretty good, and the Journal 3 sold out like crazy with many fans kids and adults lining up to get a signature from Alex Hirsch. 

These reasons are enough to let Disney consider Gravity Falls as one of their most successful animated shows amongst Kim Possible, Phineas and Ferb, the Disney Afternoon shows, their 2000s live-action sitcoms, animated shows despite ending after 65 episodes in the 2000s, and recently, Star Vs. the Forces of Evil (its S1 run did rather well which granted it a S3).

Wander Over Yonder has the same qualities as GF and Star Vs. in fandoms (despite not as big), its funny and cartoony stories, fun musical numbers, and the crew’s engagement with the fans in social media sites (plus SDCC). But what it lacked are: the big ratings, social media buzz outside of Tumblr, and revenues to make merch. possible. Therefore, despite still liking the show Disney never considered Wander as one of the most successful, as they feel that not a lot of kids are engaged money wise. No big word of mouth in many mainstream media entertainment sources. Just a decent run of revenue to last after 2 Seasons to then move on to find new shows or request Craig McCracken to make a new show that will fit the Disney XD brands of funny shows and sometimes serialized ones (after Gravity Falls’s impact). And the same thing can be said for The 7D, Randy Cunningham, and Penn Zero. As well as most of the future Disney XD shows made cheap or high quality whether ratings are good enough to expand past 2 Seasons.

Look, I know that part sounds like it’s now impossible as Disney’s handling with animated shows are very different than Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network when it comes to thinking about reviving shows that fans wanted to bring back. Disney is mostly on short-term runs for their shows with one exception of keeping 1 or 2 for more seasons if ratings are off the roof.

But we still remember how Kim Possible got one more season by popular demand. It was just sheer luck on that show to make it possible.

See, this is a big challenge and a set of periods of frustrations and doubts we’re likely gonna go through. We’re not giving up hope. Even if this would take at least a decade towards nostalgia peak (like Hey Arnold and Samurai Jack) so long as some of the old crew, Craig, and the Voice Actors are still alive and around in the animation business. We’d be lucky if we ever did succeed within a few years or months based on how strong our #SaveWOY campaign is doing.

But we’re dealing with a big corporation functioning in statistics, money, and marketable approach in how successful their brands are. Animated Movies have been on the roll. But TV animation is a challenge to maintain their line-ups while funding new show ideas.

Our only hope for Wander Over Yonder no matter what the future hold, is that as time goes by, both financially and appealing wise, with more kids and parents engaging in the fun as much as us older fans, the show and the crew get the respect and admiration for what it is and how cool and exciting it would be to revisit the silly galaxy for one more go in Season 3 with a very promising arc for Wander dealing with a threat worse than Lord Dominator, seeing Lord Hater’s backstory, and many more cartoony antics and musical numbers to see.

Disney does appreciate our wishes and admiration on Wander from us, but if kids and parents join in and express their thoughts on how good the show really is and buy more of any Wander related products (episodes, and the Personalization Shop), then Disney might listen and realize that this show could be a bit more marketable now than in the past.

Prove Disney that you, the kids, the parents, and casual folks who understands others’ interests in the show, wanted to see more Wander content (the show and more merch) money wise and quality wise with much excitement. And allow Craig McCracken back on board with some key players that made the show great in the past to finally finish the Main 4′s story arcs they’ve been wanting to tell.

There’s still hope... and a new mailing campaign

So it is indeed disappointing news that the reruns of Wander Over Yonder were a false alarm, but don’t get too disheartened. It’s not over. The SaveWOY campaign has just returned to where it was before the announcement of the reruns, that’s all. We were hopeful and still fighting hard back then so why should that change now? Chin up, Wanderers. We haven’t actually lost or been shut down. The fight continues.

@kureisan28 does raise a good point about the target demographic audience though. It’s great that we older fans all want to save the show and that we have been able to prove that to Disney, but they also need to hear from some of their younger viewers, or families with children who watch the show.

I know the September mailing campaign has just taken place but more letters never hurt. I’m grateful to everyone who took part in that, even if you haven’t yet sent off your letter. So I’m opening a third SaveWOY mailing campaign. I know that sending mail costs money so I’m not expecting everyone to take part so don’t feel pressured if you can’t or don’t want to. I completely understand. 

This mailing campaign is going to work a little differently to the last two. First, there’s no deadline for this, and you can start it whenever you’d like. I’m just considering it as the October Mailing Campaign (or Tot-ober as I’ve quickly dubbed it). Secondly, There is no need to register to take part. Finally, I’ve compiled comments from the SaveWOY petition that are based on or around children and younger viewers. You are free to choose from the list and claim any comments that catch your eye.

First Episode of WOY

It’s Trending Twenty-Seventh! And this month we’re to talk about our very first episode of Wander Over Yonder, what we liked or didn’t like about it, and how we went from there to the fans we are now.

My experience was a little interesting, though probably similar to a lot of other internet-born fans of WOY.

(This got long, so...)

I would say the first episode I ever watched was The Greatest, but that would ignore the fact that I actually watched about five minutes of The Battle Royale when it first aired without really realizing what show I was watching.

I hadn’t really known of Wander Over Yonder before this. But, well, I had just finished watching Gravity Falls: Weirdmageddon Part 1 premiere from some live-stream I had found. I expected the stream would end, but no, it just... started playing the next thing. Which was this. The Battle Royale. And I was, well, confused. But intrigued. Like wow, giant space battles? Sign me up, I thought.

But like I said, I only watched about five minute. I remembered the opening. The title of the show. Enough to recognize it on Tumblr, I suppose.

And then, about a month later, I tried watching the first episode (on kisscartoon), which was The Greatest.

And I... actually didn’t really like it. I guess I still kinda thought I was gonna get epic space battles. Or, I don’t know, something else. I don’t think I was at a time where the show’s morals really spoke to me all that much. I stopped watching it.

And that would have been that.

But then the show got cancelled.

And you might be thinking that wow, what a turn-off. Knowing this show got axed. That should have put you off WOY for good. Which probably should have happened. But.

Suddenly I started seeing WOY on my dashboard.

I saw people who were absolutely demolished that their favourite show had been cancelled.

I saw the cast and crew of this show thanking everyone profusely for their continued support, despite this outcome.

I saw this sort of unwavering determination that nah, Disney’s gotta bring it back. WOY is just that good.

And I realized I must have missed something.

So, right then and there, I went back to it. Skipped the first couple episodes because I couldn’t remember what I had seen months prior (ended up missing The Egg for like a solid five months), and started right with The Picnic. Which then became The Fugitives, then the next one after that. I think I watched all the way up to The Hat that night... eight or nine episodes.

And well. Needless to say I had kind of fallen in love.

I would say that I wished I had found the show earlier, but then I don’t think I’d have the same appreciation for it as I do now. I actually watched the bulk of the episodes during a bit of a tough time, so really, I found WOY right when I needed it.

So. I kinda consider these three episodes – The Battle Royale, The Greatest, and The Picnic – as my first Wander Over Yonder episodes.

Let’s try and make sure there’ll be more episode to come.

With the return of the reruns, I’m sure that Disney is listening to us. So let’s keep pushing for more! It has now been three months since the finale premiered, so we need to show @disneyxd that the demand for a third season hasn’t diminished at all.

Saying Thank You

So today, there was some great news about Wander Over Yonder reruns returning to TV in America. I for one, am very pleased by this.

We’ve been (politely) demanding things of Disney since March and they’ve had to put up with all sorts of letters and emails. So I believe that we, the WOY fandom, should show our gratitude to Disney for at least bringing the reruns back. Saying a simple thank you can go a long way after all. So why not send the Disney execs an email, thanking them? The execs may be the target of the SaveWOY campaign (and perhaps also our frustration) but they are people, just like us.

A quick and simple email is all it takes. Or even a letter if you want to. The WOY fandom is known for being polite and kind (ignoring the drama created by one or two “fans”) so why not show the Disney Execs that kindness, first hand?

Introducing The SaveWOY Wiki!

The SaveWOY Wiki

For the last month I’ve been working almost non-stop on giving #SaveWOY its own wiki. (Please bear in mind that the whole wiki is far from finished, but the SaveWOY section is complete and up to date. I will continue to work on the other sections of the wiki as I have only had time to create 112 pages so far.)

I’ve always felt a bit unsure about sharing Tumblr as the information hub in emails and letters for potential supporters as I know a lot of people who dislike Tumblr and stay away from it. So as well as having the Save Disney Shows website, I wanted to have a more “official” information hub for SaveWOY. And wikis are known and used by many people. A Wander Over Yonder wiki already exists, but the SaveWOY wiki is more focused on the campaign and the fan’s efforts to save the show.

Fans are currently strewn all over the internet, so I wanted to try and bring them all together in one place where they can access all of the information they might ever need. Instead of having to post on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, the petition page and DeviantART. 

You will find all the information you need about SaveWOY, from how to help, to current projects and a history of all of the efforts the fans have exhausted so far. If your project is not yet listed then feel free to make it a page on the wiki.

It might be a long shot but I’m hoping that fans will really get involved with the wiki, especially the forums and share their ideas for SaveWOY. I tried to hold a brainstorm here on Tumblr a while ago but I wound up with emails, asks, messages, reblogs and replies; it was all over the place and impossible to have a group discussion on the matter. So the forums exist for that reason. I have actually posted a few of my SaveWOY ideas there that I haven’t discussed anywhere else yet.
