With the phone to her ear, Val was listening intently to everything her agent was saying. “Oh my gosh that’s incredible,” Val half laughed into her phone. “You know I can keep things on the down low, Becks. I’m just thrilled the damn thing is finally premiering. Here I was thinking it hit the cutting room floor years ago and was so bad it would never see the light of day.” She laughed then, shaking her head slightly. “I’ve gotta go. Talk soon.”
Except the moment Val hung up she did a little giddy dance before turning around to find someone standing there. Suddenly her cheeks flushed red and she dropped her arms to her side. “….Can we just pretend you didn’t see that?”
Marco had gotten into the military for the wrong reasons, at least for him. Glory and success had seemed nice, seemed like good things to fight for, but overall they had been the things that did him in. The only light that he had was the notion that, even if it wasn’t on purpose, something good had come from what he did. Real good, not the kind of good you lied to yourself about. If there was anything that he could say encapsulated that good, it was seeing people happy. Happy in the ways that they got happy without any need for an audience or validation, just pure emotion. Like the dancing red head celebrating something, phone clutched tightly in her hand.
“We can,” he said, “but it was a nice thing to not see.”
