listen I’m definitely not saying that I DON’T want a The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue movie if we ever got that opportunity, but instead of a movie, what I REALLY want is a BBC mini-series based on tggtvav, because that would give them enough room to fit in everything that’s the book, and couples in BBC mini-series almost ALWAYS have amazing chemistry, something that a lot of couples in movies seem to lack these days, and also BBC mini-series that are based on historical fiction are always so fuckign beautiful and I guess what I’m REALLY trying to say is I just want monty, percy, and felicity on my television screen

I’ve seen a lot of good posts detailing why you should read The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue but I feel some things are being left out, so:

-Important messages about learning to love and value yourself -it shows how being privilaged in some ways and at a disadvantage in other ways (regarding identities and circumstances of their lives) affect and interact with each other but don’t negate each other -Adresses white privilege and race issues in the time period -the main character is flawed. Like, man he says some stuff in the beginning that makes me go “????” But that’s the point. He’s not a great person, but his character development is SO GOOD. None of his actions are excused, but he gets to learn and grow and become better and it’s so cool to watch -honestly all the characters are so good and well developed -and people have already pointed out how funny the book is but, in particular for me, Monty getting lowkey turned on by Percy accidentally playing footsie with him is hysterical

I’m Transgender and I DON’T Need Feminism and Here’s Why

1: There is an entire section of feminists that hate me simply because I’m trans (TERFs)

2: There is a very small (but still present) group of feminists who want me dead because I’m a traitor to women (because i transitioned to male.)

3: I live in a 1st world country and don’t need to be told i am oppressed everyday. Yes there are prejudices but there always will be and instead of looking at the people who hate me I’d rather look at the people who love me. It helps me from having an unhealthy victim mentality.

4: Feminists don’t care about my rights, they care about women’s rights. Feminists love to use the definition to show feminism is about equality but the definition says that feminism is primly focused on women.

5: It isn’t needed in the western world for anyone. The wage gap doesn’t exist and, while there are still some truly sexist people, there aren’t many. In fact, there seem to be more sexist women in this day of age than there are men.

What I am not sorry for is this: you are basking in your own ignorance, sweetie, and you need to check the facts.

In the world today, women earn $0.79 to every man’s dollar. And no, it’s not because we choose lower paying jobs. It’s because of sexism and partriarchy.

I understand that you want to look on the bright side, because you live in a 1st world county. Unfortunately, most women in the world don’t. Ignoring discrimination is not the right way to go, because then people will think it’s ok to act like that.

Also, I know that trans men experience discrimination from feminists. I cannot say enough how sorry I am for this. A feminist who truly believes what she stands for is an advocate for equality, not man hate, and I’m also sorry that you have experienced the bad people in this world, who have told you that you aren’t good enough because you knew that a woman is not who you are.

I just don’t understand how since you live in a country as privelaged as your own you choose not to appreciate the people in a much more difficult position to you.

I’m afraid to tell you that there are not even close to being more sexist women than men, even in the western world. That’s just a fact.

I’m sorry, what? The fact that you would consentingly do that is fine, no shame. But feminism is needed because some women have to show those parts of their bodies without consent. For nothing, although that’s off the point.

The point is not our ability to turn on a webcam and make money, it’s the fact that women are still seen as the weaker sex, paid less overall (even worse for WOC and disabled women), and constantly told we can’t ever be as powerful, muscular, or responsible as men.

Hello! Can you tell me anything about the wage gap? I've never heard anything consistent, but I was pretty sure it exists, pretty obviously in some fields. Am I wrong, though? There’s two different ways to look at the wage gap. One, comparing all women’s wages to all men’s wages, ignoring what field they’re in. Two, comparing women’s wages to men’s wages within the same field or even the same position at the same company. 

It is a truth universally acknowledged that, under the first method, women make $0.79 to a man’s $1, and this value has hovered around $0.78 since 2007. It’s really hard to argue with math. 

The argument comes into play when we ask if this pay discrepancy alone is enough to conclude that women are being discriminated against. Some will argue that the reason women make $0.79 to a man’s $1 is because women enter into lower-paying fields, value their families more than their job (and take time off to care for family members), and men are more tolerant of dangerous and/or undesirable working conditions and longer hours. 

While that may have some truth to it, the reality is more complex than “men go to school for higher-paying jobs.” From Huffington Post: 

Another beloved means of dismissing the gender pay gap is to point out that women tend to work in lower-paying (i.e., traditionally “female”) fields, like teaching, nursing and social work. And yes, that’s true. “Women, as a whole, continue to work in lower-paying occupations than men do,” Pew says.

But research has shown that even when women enter traditionally “male” fields, they make less. In fact, research looking at pay changes over decades has shown that when more women enter a traditionally male field, pay within that field begins to decline. As The New York Times reported, when more women began working in parks or running camps, for example, median hourly wages declined by 57 percentage points. Same goes for fields like design, housekeeping and biology. Conversely, when more men enter a traditionally female field, wages go up.

I wish they had cited “But research has shown that even when women enter traditionally “male” fields, they make less,” because that is the other way to look at the wage gap: comparing women vs men in the same field. Here is an article about the pay gap experienced by Ivy League graduates, which looks at finance and management consulting specifically, and why women earn less than men in those fields. 

It comes down to the inherent sexism in society. Women are expected to take traditionally “feminine,” lower-paying jobs. The women who go into STEM fields or other high-paying careers (having been bombarded with “but girls aren’t good at math/science/engineering” and endured male-majority classrooms and just generally putting up with academic “women aren’t good enough to be here” sexism) STILL make less than men, because when they get married and/or have children, the woman is the one expected to take care of the kids. And when you’re a doctor working or on call at all hours, you can’t be there for your kid throwing up at 3am. So women switch to jobs with more flexible hours, taking a pay cut in the process. 

Additionally, women aren’t allowed to be aggressive in the workplace. A man will be praised for being assertive, but a woman acting exactly the same way is “emotional,” “bitchy,” and “it must be that time of the month.” This can impact how much the company values women (”she never contributes anything in meetings” yeah because she’s not allowed to be assertive) and when negotiating wages (”I can’t ask for the raise I’m owed because my boss will think I’m too pushy”). 

NOTE: all of this is even worse for WOC, because of the intersectionality of sexism and racism. The Huffington Post article (also linked above) gets into that discussion. This article has a nifty bar graph comparing wage gaps by race. Lack of access to education can explain some of this gap, but since black women are one of the most educated groups in the US, there’s definitely racism at play.

Ok, so I would just like to point out that ‘feminism’ is a movement, not a group of people. You are thinking of ‘feminists’. Also, as you have no backstory, perhaps the person in the left was misinformed. Or the article on the right was fake. Either way, it is not your place to generalise the feminist movement as a lying action. Not anyone’s place, actually. So I suggest you look up some facts, for example, how long we’ve been called ‘liars’ by society for believing in equal rights. Calling us liars does nothing for anyone.

I don’t know this story. But you don’t either. That little girl may have been sexually assaulted. Or attacked by a kangaroo. The way that people hear a story is none of your business. Just move on. Don’t ever call feminism a lie.

1 out of every 6 American women have experienced attempted or completed rape. This number is higher for certain demographics - for example, 1 in 3 indigenous/native American women will be raped in her lifetime.

There are still trolls that attack me on Tumblr and Twitter, calling me slurs and threatening to rape me, simply for wanting equal rights. (Almost all other feminist blogs can attest to this). Sorry, but feminists aren’t the ones spewing rape and death threats.

Women are afraid to say no to unwanted advances because they could very well be hurt, but then they are criticized for “not being clear” and showing “mixed signals”.

People like Donald Trump can run for president and actually stand a chance at winning.

College students, when surveyed, said they believed that about 50% of rape allegations made were false, when really, the number is 2-8% - about the same as other crimes.

People still think it’s okay to catcall women. Street harassment is a problem that affects ALL women and it’s at the hands of men.

Young girls are forced into marriages worldwide (including in the United States!)

There are no regulations to ensure that sex workers are kept safe. Even if they choose to work in the sex industry (as opposed to being trafficked) they can still be assaulted or murdered, and they have no government protections.

Sex trafficking victims can actually be imprisoned themselves for prostitution.
